Good Hello.

Of course, Philanthropy is a popular pastime of rich folks in the United States, making this hobby completely appropriate for the July 4th Holiday.

Hello Austin, To answer your question from spacebrothers show, the records I bought are some kind of groovy β€˜60s Mexican a-gogo by the looks of them. Haven’t listened to them yet.

Oooooo! That sounds like a score, Mr. Fab.

And: Hello, Scott67!

You get the impression that Dan also enjoys making fun of Suzie, at this point in their relationship.

I like how most people who write to Box 13 - who have already sort of agreed to hire him - always wanna know how Box 13 works, and why Dad does it. You would think they wouldn't care... except by way of offering exposition.

Nice to see you in the chat, Charles!

@ Fab - SCORE!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:07pm
Austin Rich:

Howdy spacebrother. Yeah, some of the analogies don't really land on this show. It's sort of charming that way... you can imagine they writer trying for a good line, and almost getting there.

Going to the mission he says he pulled out his oldest suit - I like how even the homeless guys wear suits.

Charles:

This guy's pushy. I feel like I'm supposed to eat soup too right now.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:11pm
Austin Rich:

One ongoing theme that I appreciate on this show is that Dan really does go undercover to get the ins and outs of how different parts of society work. I'm sure in 1949, the average listener probably didn't know much about how sandhogs worked, or what life in a mission was like. The writers really do wanna show their work when they research this show.
Avatar 6:12pm
spacebrother:

The atmosphere seems authentic enough.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:15pm
Austin Rich:

I've seen other critics point to the "realism" in this show, and that it does offer a glimpse into what life was really like at the time. I try to listen for the differences in what life what like then vs. now. I can usually find at least one thing in old shows and movies that is interesting to me, for that reason.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:15pm
Austin Rich:

Whoa! Not sure what happened there. Sounded like a glitch or something. Sorry about that.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:22pm

This weird scam where they get homeless men to do this works seems particularly American, and appropriate for the July 4th Holiday.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:26pm
Austin Rich:

There's a part of me that remembers a Batman: The Animated Series episode that sort of had this same plot.
  6:26pm
spacebrother:

Precisely what this character did: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curtis_Howe_Springer

Maybe it was the inspiration for this episode.

"Zzyzx's original encampment consisted of 20 tents, and he recruited homeless men from Los Angeles' Skid Row to build simple concrete buildings."
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:29pm

Unusually not great sound for a Box 13. Mostly just crackly. This seems to be a problem with the later episodes.
  6:29pm
spacebrother:

Damn wire recorder interference!
Avatar 6:30pm

Well that was a creepy episode.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:30pm

I was just wondering if these were from transcriptions, or private recordings? Probably transcriptions, but probably not good ones? If only someone left a chain of custody on these files.

The Dean Martin parody of that song:

You should take your Dean Martin parody act on the road!

The return of Ah Sin! While this era of The Voyage of The Scarlet Queen doesn't really have an ongoing storyline anymore, some of the old character from the Kang adventure pop up in new ways, from time to time.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:35pm
Austin Rich:

Not bad sound on Voyage of The Scarlet Queen this week... sort of bass-heavy, but otherwise passable. I did a little EQ, but this one wasn't bad to start with.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:36pm
Austin Rich:

Ah Sin, doing a bad Charles Lawton impression, and his Texan sidekick, is just so American as to be 100% appropriate on the July 4th Holiday.
  6:36pm
spacebrother:

"The fat one who sweats a lot."
  6:37pm
spacebrother:

Reference to "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid."
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:38pm
Austin Rich:

Damn! I probably haven't seen that movie in 25 years or so. I'll be honest, aside from the premise, I sort of don't remember specific lines.
  6:38pm
spacebrother:

What Steve Martin called Laughton in the film.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:39pm
Austin Rich:

I recall he had a pretty brilliant run of films there, that one included. I should probably re-watch his stuff later this summer.
Avatar 6:39pm
Charles:

I'm glad we're having a bit more Ah Sin.
  6:41pm
spacebrother:

Gotta go make BBQ food. Thanks for the shows and the always-brilliant ads!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:42pm
Austin Rich:

My theory - without a lot of evidence to support it - is that the on-going storyline wasn't really appreciated by the network. And then, after they dropped that (supposedly), they did occasionally reference the ongoing storyline. (Like in this episode.) So I think this show was just too atypical, and led to it not getting renewed for more episodes. (That happened a lot with a lot of poor-performing shows.) Still, I'd like to know more. I'm so into the premise of "sea-fairing adventures" that I'm sad this didn't last longer.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:42pm
Austin Rich:

Good night, spacebrother! See ya next week!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:44pm
Austin Rich:

Since spacebrother mentioned them: the ads this week are based on my memories of some old Fred Meyer commercials that ran in the late 80's / early 90's. I think I have the basic "format" right, and they would change out little bits of dialog, and re-use an essentially similar ad. I figured that kind of cost-cutting measure was appropriate for a July 4th Program.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:52pm
Austin Rich:

Ah Sin seems to really care about his Texan sidekick.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:54pm
Austin Rich:

There's a tiny bit of a Nero Wolfe vibe to the relationship between Ah Sin and his companion. If Ah Sin solved more crimes, it would be a direct analog.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:56pm
Austin Rich:

Another reference to Neilson!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:57pm

I guess the relationship could be more a compared to the Fat Man and Lackey in, "The Big Sleep."

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
Austin Rich:

What I appreciate about this Ben Brooks documentary is that we're about 30 minutes into a 90 minute show and they're still only covering stuff in the 20's.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:14pm
Austin Rich:

I love the idea of the unrestricted broadcasting of the roaring 20's. Would love to hear more samples of that stuff, but sadly, most of the radio recordings that do exist of the early days are VERY rare before the 30's.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:15pm
Austin Rich:

A Lee de Forest reference, there at the end.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
Austin Rich:

Pretty soon, the date of our program will come close to almost aligning with the date of these original Chandu broadcasts. I haven't precisely done the math, but I'd be curious how close we get.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:22pm
Austin Rich:

Much like what Sheena's listeners do during the Summer, I can only imagine that the kids of 1948 - home for the summer, and their only entertainment being this new fangled radio in the house - would probably come back every night to hear another installment of an adventure show like this, with kids in some of the primary roles.

Admittedly, the "adventure" seems to be happening mostly outside the dialog scenes in the show, which seem to largely recap the previous story and the relationships of the characters. Still, this probably would have caught my attention as a kid.
Avatar 7:23pm
Charles:

Same, because there's "magician" in the name.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:23pm

This meeting between Roxor and Chandu has been brewing now for the last 20+ episodes. I can only imagine how fans of the show reacted to this which it first aired.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
Austin Rich:

...when it first aired...
Avatar 7:28pm

Roxor's laugh sounded like a kid being proud of a prank hehe
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:28pm

A nice bonus at the beginning of this episode.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:29pm

Yeah. The Roxor actor really leaned into that character.
