Akoya Live + New and Mixed

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

NYC-based Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble combines elements of African and Afro-Cuban music, jazz and funk. The music is multicultural and the musicians too: bandmembers come from the US, Latin America, Africa and even Asia. Vocalist Kaleta (who also leads his own eponymous band – more info here) spent 10 years on the road with Fela Kuti and has also performed with Femi Kuti and King Sunny Ade.

The 14 piece (!) orchestra squeezed into WFMU's modest performance room for an hour of sizzling live performance brilliantly mixed by Chris Stubbs with the assistance of WFMU video archivist Phil Catalano.

The band’s debut cd Introducing Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble (Afrobomb Music) is available from cdbaby.com. Keep up with Akoya’s ongoing musical adventures at http://www.akoyamusic.com.
