Spotlight on African xylophones including an intimate live session with Guinean-born balafon player Famoro Dioubate and cellist Raul Rothblatt, an archival visit with the Ghanaian gyil player Bernard Woma and lots of African (and later, some Asian) xylophone music on record.

Famoro has serious credentials in West African traditional music.  He is the grandson of El Hadj Djelli Sory Kouyate, a living legend of the Mandeng balafon, and he has played for Guinean Presidents and with the country’s most famous musical export, Mory Kante, among many others.  Here in NYC he is a member of the Fula Flute ensemble, and Famoro and Raul play together in the extremely multi-culti band Dallam-Dougou.  Raul is a composer and he's also co-founder of the locally-based Hungarian roots dance band Eletfa.

Raul's Jumbie Records label is producing a wide-ranging African xylophone conference / festival featuring performances by Famoro Dioubate, Bernard Woma and many others at Columbia University and Satalla, 37 W 26 St, April 29-30.
