Colette Magny  Oink! Oink!   Favoriting Repression (1964)  Joel, a listener from France remembers/writes in: "Wow, thank you for the very long and very beautiful track of Colette Magny! It was so beautiful, so strong! I had tears in my eyes ...really! And the orchestral background was so beautiful. It is too bad you do not understand what she says. It is very strong. It is a song about black people in the Mississippi state and about inequality of the USA (at this time, of course! but what are the changes today?). I am not good enough to translate. It is so beautiful. I wondered what she had became, and I read on the internet that she died in 1997, she was 70 years old. It is unclear if she was sick (lungs, I think because she had smoked a lot) or if she committed suicide. I knew her songs in the seventies. She had always been censored in DeGaulle administration, and also in Pompidou, and Giscard administrations. A friend of hers who was working in the national radio told her that her vinyl records were immediately scratched with a knife when they arrived! She had a little success again during Mitterrand administration but she was already old and sick. She retired in the country in the heights and everyone forgot her for 20 years! But when I was younger she was very known for a beautiful song entitled Melocoton. So beautiful. Everybody called her the queen of the blues but she did not like that image of herself at all, she wanted to fight about every subject of that time, Vietnam, feminism, racism, injustice, poverty... but she never was really a politician, only a singer." More info on Colette Magny can be found here.
