From Russia with Love... with Tristra Newyear

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add comments

A lot of folks think of the former Soviet Union as one big monolothic culture. Not ethnomusicologist Tristra Newyear, however.
She's just returned from the outer reaches of the Russian Federation and as guest dj she plays rarely heard music from a range of minority cultures there.
Her selections include traditional and neo-traditional as well as some curious manifestations of Western pop, including all your favorite Mongolian heavy metal.

Read Tristra's article about music in Buryatia today: http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~asiactr/haq/200001/0001a007.htm
