This may be the single worst Dusty Show ever ... so far. It was a weird week. I just couldn't seem to get a show off the ground. Many false starts ... second guessing ... and real-life interruptions. Then suddenly ... I had one night left to produce a show. So what I ended up doing was melding two previously abandoned half-shows and sending it in. I should have just aired a re-run. The Doyle Slater character gets boring pretty fast. In hindsight, I wish i had done the whole show in the Easy Favorites format. That was more fun. I had an e-discussion with Mike Lupica of FMU about the "Easy Listening" format. He pointed out to me how he felt that it was a great loss when Easy Listening stations disappeared from the radio landscape and I agree. At the time, back in the day, I suppose many young people thought it was pretty annoying. A real symbol of an anti-music older generation. But now, I love my easy listening albums and closer inspection reveals that whole genre to have produced some rather innovative and even experimental records. After all ... it was usually done by good musicians who probably needed work and skilled directors given a certain amount of leeway to make music which embodied certain "moods." Hense the often used term, Mood Music. As I mentioned to Mike, I would take Muzak™ over Smooth Jazz (today's equivalent of Easy Listening) any day. Then again ... maybe 30 years from now Smooth Jazz from the turn of this century will end up being cool somehow. Hard to imagine but who knows? I will most likely be annelid fodder by then. Anyway ... apologies to those who found this episode less than satisfactory and thanks to those precious few who seemed to enjoy it. I think you were just being kind.

The relentlessly repeated background music for all the Doyle Slater segments is from a Bud Shank LP on World Pacific called "California Dreamin'." The song is called "Gotta Go" and was written by Marty Paich and Rod McKuen.
Modern Sound	The Spirit Of This Land	Hootenanny And American Ballads	Modern Sound	1964?	LP	I usually buy anything I see on the Modern Sound label. Lo-budget knock off LP's out of Nashville where studio musicians re-create the favorites of the day. Some of these are delightfully horrible.

Whistling Jack Smith	I Was Kaiser Bill's Batman	The Greatest Hits From England	Parrot	1967	LP	#20 in the states in 1967 and #5 in England. This was a studio project and there was no actual person named Whistling Jack Smith. Someone was "appointed" to be him when the record took off, but the hit machine stopped there. One-hit wonderland but a good one.

Sally Field	Find Yourself A Rainbow / Felicidad	The Flying Nun	Colgems	1967	LP	Sorry if I was a bit brusque with these two Sally songs. i just couldn't handle it. She was a label-mate to the Monkees though on the Colgems label. Fun to think of them hanging out.

William Hanna	The Jetsons (Main Title)	Television's Greatest Hits	TVT	1986	LP	Originally written in 1962. Evidently performed by William Hanna of Hanna Barbera fame?? Or he wrote it?? Anyway ... it's pretty great.
Wayne Shanklin	Jockey Martin "Jockey Martin" by "Wayne Shanklin"	The Modern Minstrel	Coral	50's	LP	I have played Wayne before on the Dusty Show. I am not sure why but I love this song and have ever since I found this in some forlorn thrift store in Florida. "Go on and use the whip whip whip!" Wayne also wrote Frankie Laine's huge hit "Jezebel."

An Abrupt and Inexplicable Shift into the Easy Favorites!
Muzak	Living Together, Growing Together	Stimulus Progression 5	Muzak	1973	LP	Volumes could be written about Muzak and it's effect on our minds. I love this Stimulus Progression Lp and vividly remember the elevator music of my youth. It's all quite scientific. As the liner notes say ... "Muzak programs are employed to create environmental conditions condicive to improved customer relations and profits." Oh, dear. Another curious thing ... if this is #5 ... where are the other LP's? The Electronic Concept Orchestra	Stella By Starlight	Electric Love	Limelight	1973	LP	Eddie Higgins on Moog synthesizer. This is a great LP. I use it all the time as Dusty background music. The 3rd and final ECO LP and representative of a trend at the time that saw early MOOG enthusiasts mixing synth and real strings for a new kind of Easy Listening experience. Alfred Newman	Inez' Theme "Inez' Theme" by "Alfred Newman"	Airport (Original Soundtrack Album	Decca	1970	LP	Another wonderful album of music from the motion picture, Airport. Can I just tell you how bummed I am that i have abused the crap out of my albums making these shows all these years! Talk about ringwear and split seams. I could have made a fortune on EBAY. I'll be lucky to get a quarter for them at a yard sale now. I'm queasy just thinking of it. Losing sleep. Nuerotic nocturnal calculations of immeasurable loss. 5 years ago this LP was prisitine. Now, it looks as though it has been run over by a Cub Cadet riding mower. I need to go digital. I never learned to take care of my things.

I am getting some play from all those lounge records I bought a few years ago! I blame Irwin Chusid for this glut of Martin Denny and the like ... now that the fad has wained. Still love this stuff though.
