Interview and musical retrospective: Goran Bregovic.

Guitarist with the massively popular Yugoslav rock band Bijelo Dugme in his youth, Goran Bregovic , whose father was Croat Catholic, mother Orthodox Serb and wife Muslim created a second career while in in Paris during Yugoslavia's breakup. He began writing and orchestrating music - often Balkan/Gypsy-flavored - for film, notably working with the famed director Emir Kusturica on Time of the Gypsies (1989), Arizona Dream (1993) and Underground (1995). Sometimes Bregovic has brought his musical lives together - as when he teamed up Iggy Pop with a Gypsy brass band in Arizona Dream. He has also collaborated with Scott Walker, Cesaria Evora and many others across musical and cultural borders.

While widely recognized in Europe - Time of the Gypsies went gold in several countries; Iggy's In the Death Car from Arizona Dreams charted in Europe - Bregovic is a bit under the radar in the US. He's hoping to raise his profile with a mini-tour this July. Included is his New York debut - along with 42 musicians including a Serbian brass band, a classical string ensemble, a choir and Gypsy and Bulgarian vocalists - at the Lincoln Center Festival at Avery Fisher Hall on Thursday, July 13. Bregovic has been presenting similar super-sized Gypsy brass extravaganzas in Europe for several years, but never before in the US.

Special thanks to Eileen McMahon from Lincoln Center.
