Kaleta + Concert Previews / Mixed Bag

Kaleta – the band – is a West African pop band that fuses rhythms and melodies of traditional African music with those of Western pop music. The result is a captivating mixture of African folk, JuJu, and high-life music, laced with R&B reggae and rock; the sound is exotic, yet familiar. The lyrics are in native West African languages including Yoruba (Nigeria), Fon and Goun (Benin), and Ewe (Togo), as well as in French and English. The band has members from across the globe.
Kaleta – the bandleader – is a composer, percussionist, lead vocalist, and guitarist. He has performed on world tours and recorded numerous albums with African musicians, such as King Sunny Ade, Femi Kuti, Fela Kuti. Kaleta is a former member of Shina Peters’ Afro-JuJu band in Nigeria.
On this show we hear a great set from Kaleta’s wide-ranging Afropop formation,
simply known as Kaleta. Kaleta also fronts two excellent Afrobeat
bands, his own Zozo Afrobeat and Akoya.
