Live session, in the final half hour of the show: Andy Statman Trio, with bassist Jim Whitney and percussionist Larry Eagle.

Brilliant clarinetist and mandolinist Andy Statman is a musical visionary on two fronts: Following his 1960s apprenticeship with mandolin master David Grisman, Statman helped redefine bluegrass as a member of the 70s "newgrass" band Country Cookin' with Tony Trischka.

And he was one of the leading lights in the klezmer music revival of the same era, prized pupil the legendary klezmer clarinetist Dave Tarras. Tarras so adored Statman that he bequeathed his instruments to Andy when he died.

Statman has two excellent new cds, one representing each of the major strains in his music: the bluegrassy / rootsy "East Flatbush Blues" and "Awakening from Above", an exploration of Chassidic Jewish music (both available from cdroots.com).

The Andy Statman Trio plays most Mondays and Thursdays at the Charles Street Synagogue, Charles Street at West Fourth Street in Greenwich Village at 8:30 pm.  Info here: http://www.andystatman.org/SeeDerechAmuno.htm

Andy's next area club gig:  Saturday March 10 at 8pm at Barbes, 376 9th St. at 6th Ave in Park Slope, Brooklyn, http://www.barbesbrooklyn.com.

Special thanks to engineer Chris Stubbs and assistant Juan Aboites for another great mix under especially tight time constraints, and Andy's producer (and driver!) Ed Haber.
