Listener comments!

  9:16am Parq:

Take it to the bridge, D. I'll stay by the radio as much as I can this AM, and catch up with the rest on the archives. Best from the Flatiron District.
  9:33am fighttheJCityWay:

Nice to wake up to Elis song - Thank you!!!

any Roy Haynes today?

leave babylon...
  9:34am Hugo:

I enjoyed that "Carnival" piece. It was a hit for the Alan Price Set back in 1968 under the title "Don't Stop The Carnival". Some of us do remember ...
  10:21am Cecile:

Is this the same Michael White, the violinist who played with John Handy and mentored Eyvind Kang? If so, he's very mult-talented.
  10:21am mike cooper:

Hi what a pleasure - i just got in put you on. Mike died the day before my 65th birthday concert in London. I had the pleasure of working and recording with him in the seventies with Louis, Dudu, Mongezi and Harry Miller as you probably know. A great player who will be sadly missed. Much more to tell byt this isnt the place obviouslky. Just wanted to say hi and thanx.
  10:28am Doug:

Mike, a pleasure and delight to hear from you. I've slated a tune of yours with Ossie to close today's show. Brilliant!
  10:32am Hugo:

There was also a Stan Tracey - Keith Tippett duo called appropriately "T n' T". Quite interesting as an opportunity to compare their individual styles.

And hi to Mike Cooper! That "Life and Death in Paradise" is a highly prized item in the record collection!
  10:33am Doug:

Cecile, no it's a different Michael White. This MW is an exalted horn player from New Orleans.
  10:38am Cecile:

Excellent music.
Thanks as always, Doug!
  10:47am Hugo:

I think his best recordings were with the trio and "All Night Long" is quite possibly the best of 'em all. IMHO. All three are on overdrive throughout. But why did the record have to be faded? Aaargh!
  11:03am Brandon:

Funny, the word "exalted" was the first thing that came to mind this morning when I woke up. Hadn't thought anything was that exalted in a while...
  11:16am Joel Wanek:

Thanks for the lovely tribute, Sir Doug.
  11:21am Michael & Miki King:

A deep pleasure to hear so much Ozzy in one sitting. What a tone he had! There will never be another. Thanks for such a loving and respectful memorial broadcast. With love.
  11:28am Joel Wanek:

So much joy in the music, so much joy . . .
  11:29am Doug:

M & M,
The pleasure is set in motion by various factors, not the least of which is your devotion to creative souls and generosity to this program in the service of such.
  11:36am Michael King:

Doug, The Peanuts Club was a meeting place for the new music in London's east end. Mike held a long residency at Peanuts and curated weekly concerts: Mike Osborne & Friends etc... for quite a number of years.
  11:50am Pamela:

It's been a wonderful music day. Thank you.
  11:56am mike cooper:

Ohhh!!!! What an honour to come after all that tremendous music - isnt that Willisau festival All Night Long amazing!!?? Thank you thank you thank you to you both and to Ossy.

  11:57am Bill:

Thanks Doug. It was wonderful show and a wonderful remembrance of a great musician.
  11:57am Paul Sherratt ( UK ):

Thanks ( once more ) Doug
  11:59am north guinea hills:

wow, hadn't heard that mike cooper piece before. always loved that interaction between folk/free jazz/and outer moments....

and nice osborne tribute, kudos!
  12:36pm Vic:

Hi Doug, thanks for the Mike Osborne tribute, sadly missed since the eighties.
  8:45pm rob:

I just knew you would remember Mike Osborne for us. He was the first person I saw live at Peanuts in 1975 in my first week in the U.K. Thanks, Rob(52)
  9:09am mike k:

Hey Doug,
My sincere thanks for introducing me to Mr. Osbourne's enormous talent. I will keep my eyes peeled for his recordings, as the show proved that anywhere is a good place to start.

Just a note- would you (or anyone else here) feel up to the task of updating his page on wikipedia? It seems like he deserves a more fitting memorial. Thank you!
  10:59am Doug:

Mike K,
You are so right about MO's Wiki entry. I kept going back to it, hoping someone would've updated it this past week. To no avail.
  11:25pm Phong:

Thanks for this very touching tribute. I really appreciate the personal commentary and reminiscences on the man and the music. ... Which led me to suggest another tribute on a fellow (fallen) traveler, how about a Marion Brown show?
  9:51am Doug:

Phong, you are right-on about Marion Brown being deserving of loving tribute. Beyond the creativity and innovation he produced, it is how universally he is beloved by his fellow musicians and fans that stands out. I am not in the habit of doing "tribute" or "memorial" shows. I prefer to think of each show -- and each track I select, actually -- as part of a long-running tribute to the creative souls so deserving. It's true that recently I've done full-length shows for Max Roach and Mike Osborne, and I'm sure I will do more down the road. But it takes an deeper emotional connection for me to choose to interupt my regular programming for a special show. And with Roach and Ossie, it is almost as if I had no choice but to do those shows. But, back to Marion Brown: According to a comment left at the marvelous blog Destination Out, MB is doing well and can be reached by telephone. He loves to receive calls from fans, but please call before 6pm eastern time: 954-926-5600.
