From now on, I'd like to create to separate but not mutually exclusive experiences for the show: one audio, the other web-ual. So I won't ever even MENTION the question of the day on the air....you gotta come here to get it!!! (let's see how long this lasts)

AUXILARY QUESTION: HOW AND HOW MANY HOURS A WEEK DO YOU LISTEN TO INTERNET RADIO??



It is shocking to me how few of my friends, acquaintances and family members actually listen to the radio (you know the real kind with a knob or some buttons) so I want to see what kind of people you guys and girls out there who are listening actually do. OK, I'll start. I own six real radios and listen to them for about 10 - 15 hours a week, a Tivoli PAL mostly, a Sony big receiver unit, a gigantic floor unit from the 30s that doesn't work except for to entertain the cats with wires hanging out, a shortwave battery operated digital thing, a really shitty tiny digital scan thing that barely works and, oh wait I think that's it, which is actually five. I listen to internet radio about 10 - 15 hours a week too.

Only my car radio (less than 1 hr/wk) and home stereo radio (6-8 hrs/wk). Internet radio probably 10-15 hrs/wk. Hey all the photos on your playlist are great but a lot failed to load, and they are probably costing WFMU a lot of $ in bandwidth. Liking your groove. Pretty dope.

before this summer we lived in brooklyn, and there we had a bunch of real radios. one NAD tuner, one little green thing from moma store, one pink hello kitty cd boom box, a clock radio, and big blue awesome headphones with a built in tuner. we also had one old tube radio that didnt work, and possibly other non-working models. we used to listen to the clock radio in the mornings for an hour or so, and to the nad some on weekends or evenings (fmu, nyc, hot97....., baseball or basketball games), and the headphones sometimes when doing the dishes or if we wanted to feel really cool. we also had a car with a radio in it we would listen to practically every time we drove. i dont know how many hours that is a week, but its several, probly 10-20. i would also listen to fmu online for practically the duration of my working week.
now we live in denmark, and we have 2 radios, the little green one mentioned above, and one in our spare stereo, a beomaster from 1977. we have used each to tune danish radio, but i dont think danish radio is that good; we rented a car and drove around the country and pretty much all the stations were terrible. we mostly use the green one to play fmu podcasts through non-computer speakers, or movies. i still listen to fmu online for about the duration of my workweek.

It is safe to say that I leave WFMU playing on my compuer throughout the whole day. But how many hours I actually listen...probably 3. So 3x7= 21 hours/week

David - thank you, I am really glad you're enjoying the groove! There's a great reason you can't see some images - it's because they're hotlinked from other sites. Some people call it stealing, I call it creative curation. So it doesn't cost WFMU any money - usually.

Catpatz - I'm sorry to hear that about Danish radio - you'd think with its being in that region (which I automatically assume to be cool because of its proximity to Sweden) that the radio would be good. BUT ON THE OTHER HAND, I'm really glad to hear your detailed account of the radios you have owned. Quite a collection! Would love to see some pictures. That would be nice! Also glad you are "KEEPING THE VIBE ALIVE" across the sea.

i own 2 tivoli radios and listen to them at home about 30 hours per week. i don't have a tv. i also listen to the radio in the car and about another 30 hours per week of internet streams/archives at work. never really thought about it but that's a lot of radio! and nyc radio really is the best.

I am prone to picking up radios at yard sales. I must have about 10 all told, mostly cheap '70s or '80s clock radios. I have them scattered around the house. I listen to an hour or two in the morning and between one and three hours in the evening. A bit less on weekends. I live in Boston, so it's WZBC, WMBR, WBUR, WGBH, good non-commercial radio. That comes out to an average of 20+ hours per week. I'd say I listen to about 15 hours of Internet radio, at work through headphones, or at home on my shitty laptop. I've been meaning to improve that setup for years...

Every room in the house has at least one radio - some have two. Altogether I think that makes 10 in the house and one in the car. Living in the UK I think I have access to some of the best spoken word radio in the world. For music I look further afield. I listen to about 15-20 hours a week on the radio and 3-4 hours on the internet of which yours is the most regular listen. Thanks.
