Spearheading the conscious movement, heavyweights including Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco and Brother Ali, continue to produce tracks incorporating the most reassuring positive elements of Hip Hop culture, as it was meant to be. Without being marginalized, Muslim artists have always held their position among Rap industry chart toppers. Many Muslim artists continue to embrace progressive Hip Hop culture as a vehicle for unification, upliftment and self-empowerment. In this same spirit of celebration, the Sisterhood of The Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood, in association with Muslims in Hip Hop, is continuing this sacred legacy by presenting their first concert/fund-raiser featuring a multi-cultural sampling of the most profound Muslim Hip Hop and Spoken Word artists from across the nation,on Friday, October 26th, 2007, from 7pm - 11pm at Aaron Davis Hall at 135th St. and Convent Ave, on the campus of the City College of New York, in Harlem, NYC. Iranian-American producer/DJ K-Salaam will kick off the evening with Dancehall and Hip Hop stylings. Headliners include the intense and explosive, Amir Sulaiman and the demure Liza Garza, (both from the Bay and both featured on HBO's Def Poetry Series); Hip Hop activist, NYOIL; the bboy/girl scene's favorite emcee, One Be Lo from Detroit; forward thinking and ever evolving NJ emcee: Hasan Salaam; Borinquen lyrical soldiers, M-Team; smooth and sassy diva MissUndastood; soulful urban griot, Tasleem Jamila Firdausee; up and coming Bay area emcee, Five Eighty; NYC's own Jabbar and Ali and Puerto Rican Muslimah, Poeta Guerrera. The evening will also feature a special poppin' and lockin' showcase featuring: Popmaster Fabel (Rock Steady Crew), Darrin Henson (Stomp the Yard, Soul Food) and Hakim Sabree (early 80's Funk dancer)! Jorge "Fabel" Pabon will also host the festivities while Al-Hajj Talib 'Abdur-Rashid, Imam of the Harlem based Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood, affectionately called "The Hip Hop Imam" will offer brief remarks. Well known for his work on inter-faith dialogues, social justice issues and HIV-AIDS in the African Diaspora, Imam Talib says, "We are expressing our support...for the positive [Muslim and non-Muslim] young people of the Hip Hop generation who seek an outlet for their artistic expression. We're praying and planning that it will set a new and different standard for 'inner-attainment' in the 21st century!" Everyone of all ages and backgrounds is invited to attend, especially those who miss that special time in Hip Hop when artists with positive lyrics were topping the charts! "Rhythms of the Sacred Legacy" is in the spirit of traditional Muslim festivities that extend beyond the 'Eidul-Fitr, the communal break-fast festival that follows the sacred month of Ramadan. The Prefuse 73 track you're playing is my favorite off of his newest album. At first, "Preparations" REALLY disappointed me, but it's slowly growing on me the more I listen to it.

It's not just funky - it's spunky!

Can you hook me up with a Japanese easy-listening hipster? I need to find a Japanese easy-listening LP that was only available in Japan in the 1960s.

Don't know title or artist. I have song titles and audio clips. Full details on my home page - Google "Jessen" and "mystery record".

You're making my afternoon at Disney IT Glendale just a bit more slicey-dicey.
  Fri. 10/26/07 3:24pm ALF:

What do you wanna bet it's all this antibacterial soap that the kids are using, which kills all the "good" bacteria on their hands & leaves them susceptible to these new "bad" germs!
  Fri. 10/26/07 4:15pm Hell Yeah!!:

My goldfish Rusty lives in Bushwick!
Fri. 10/26/07 4:18pm north guinea hills:

ismael, you're dead on the point. it's good to be somewhat dirty. it's also why these snowflakes have so many crazy allergies. when your immune system isn't exposed to anything too harmful during it's formative years, it will mistarget benign pathogens.
  Fri. 10/26/07 4:20pm rusty:

had a chat yesterday about how it's probably better to not give your kids vaccinations. they contain mercury and all the diseases are curable except polio. also, something about hiv postive born kids can grow out of it??
  Fri. 10/26/07 4:26pm Kent Downing:

I always listen to Billy Jam on WFMU while I plan my freeform show, The Red Wheelbarow, heard every Friday night from 9 p.m. to 11 pm. (CST) on Kansas City Community Radio (www.kkfi.org) . WFMU, in its entirity, inspires much creativity in my life. Thank You FMU!
Fri. 10/26/07 4:26pm north guinea hills:

depends on the content of the vaccinations. some can be be benificial. but many to have questionable ingredients. ask your doctor for the contents before you get your child vaccinated, and make the decision yourself.
  Fri. 10/26/07 4:30pm p-chop:

in response to "topic"
listening to WFMU of itself IS the favorite ARTFORM i do when it comes to the current day job-----my ear has got skillz and WFMU cultivates it taste for new flavors.....in the dark hours WFMU chases my pen down the page and then back up a-gain and molds the reconfiguration of sliced up images...what would i do w/out fmu?

PS: true that--recommended vaccinations are not necessary and may put children at risk greater for other diseases---dude...did this jus turn into the advise nurse site??
"now if you'll excuse me, i must be on my way"
  Fri. 10/26/07 4:37pm Ismael:

I listen to Billy Jam & other FMU shows whilst copyediting.
  Fri. 10/26/07 4:37pm djsm:

  Fri. 10/26/07 5:07pm Ike:

Kneel! KNEEL before the might of Sutekh!

Evil? Your evil is my good. I am Sutekh the Destroyer. Where I tread, I leave nothing but dust and darkness. I find that good.
  Fri. 10/26/07 5:41pm P 2 da C:
