I'm not sure I 'get' this Rupture thing, why not just play some dubstep without all the guitar skrangling all over it? The original producers don't get any credit this way.
Wed. 1/16/08 4:29pm
From:
Doug
Or share the name of the producer and the track that is playing behind the guitarist. Not saying that it's necessarily bad, just it sucks for the producer having his credit effectively stolen by Rupture.

Oh, I'm at least two thirds of a six pack of JT. I don't know how that translates into James Taylor units, however.

doug, would you say the same thing for john cage and david tudor for the sound sources in their variations iv?
is the manipulation and contextualization which creates what makes it anew.

That's an interesting question. Christian Marclay etc., too. It's the same as the old copyright question of exactly what is fair use and what is a derivative work... I feel like Rupture is taking enough from the records he's playing and not altering them substantially enough to warrant a mention of the original artist. I wouldn't make a mixtape and not put a playlist on it - it would make it look like I was claiming those works as my own.

when i make mixtapes w/ 3-4 turntables and other media, the resultant schematic of authorship i create often becomes very convoluted.
in most of /rupture's previous 'abstracted' turntablism, he has given credit to his sound sourced.
in the end, i see no difference to a manipulated string vibrating and a manipulated sample. it's all a sound source.
if you take it far enough, the designer and/or craftsman of the 'instrument' deserves as much credit for the sound source as the musician who 'creates' it.

Just for another perspective, I'm in a band that was sampled extensively w/o permission or credit by Eye from the Boredoms for a Hanatarash track...when we found out, we were honored!

I agree with you completely, NGH. However, what I've heard of the Rupture record that Ken and Maria have been playing has mostly been a single dubstep track with guitar solo over it - not a hell of a lot of manipulation going on. That said, I do agree with you in principle and there's probably more going on than I'm hearing...

I'm definitely not a proponent of a 100% "permissioned" culture (having to get a release or a license for every snippet of "content" one uses in another work) but if we're going to redesign the existing intellectual property laws in this country, putting aside $$ for a second, at a bare minimum there should be an attribution right for artists, similar to the moral rights concept in France . . .

w/ the whole debate put aside, it really makes me blue in the face when dj's claim that the tracks they are playing are 'secrets'. it's a disservice to the original artists and it makes the dj look like a pompous ass. open source info for crate digging

what I love about wfmu is that the djs seem pretty squarely opposed to the idea of dj "secrecy" (i.e. hipsterism), which is the hippest point of view of all . . .

aside from making like a pompous ass, the secrecy stance is a really easy balloon to pop- a really lame way to attmpt to gain status or whatever

Great show as usual, Maria! Farley "Jackmaster" Funk & Jessie Saunders - Love Can't Turn Around is an amazing remake of that Isaac Hayes track you just played, w/ one of the most over-the-top, gospel-inflected vocal performances I've ever heard. Bet you'd love it!

this song is great. (guardian angel) the conductor in the background reminds me of this conductor i get occasionally on the weekends on (i think) the a/c line who is extremely nice, warm and verbose. another great subway song is by IRT (interbor rhythm team) about the ride from south ferry and heights of wealth to the "last stop" in Harlem. Can't remember the title at the moment. I heard it on Billy Jam's show.

Enjoyed the show Maria.
That Aatavu Chanda cut is on Asia Classics I from David Byrne's Luaka Bop label. Luaka Bop has these credits for the song:
Lyrics by Chi. Udayashanker
Performed by S.P. Balasubrahmanyam & Manjula Guru
This song is also on Luaka Bop's Zero Accidents on the Job 10 Year retrospective 2 CD set.
