Wed. 1/16/08 3:22pm From: north guinea hills

it's what happens when you listen to WFMU and try to pry away music literature from your own hands.....
haven't heard this new SOOA album yet...

Wed. 1/16/08 3:25pm From: PARIA

Hello

just a little correction; Lhasa de Sela is her name.

greetings from Berlin, Germany

Wed. 1/16/08 3:27pm From: Sur

Just got home and turned on the radio, in time to hear Lhasa! And everything that follows...WOW! Great sounds, feelings, vibes -- keep 'em coming!

Wed. 1/16/08 3:29pm From: maria

Greetings Berlin-- Just a slip of the fingers not mistaken identity, but thanks for your vigilance

Wed. 1/16/08 3:38pm From: Eric

Just to help -- it's pronounced Mary "go-shay".

Wed. 1/16/08 3:39pm From: Eric

And, yes, she is awesome. I used to live around Boston, where she played live a lot.

Wed. 1/16/08 3:40pm From: maria

oy veh, ok. ;>)

Wed. 1/16/08 3:43pm From: Eric

But what I should not have forgotten to say -- awesome show! You are bringing me such joy, thank you!

Wed. 1/16/08 3:48pm From: JT

I heard the Fire on Fire song and thought "oh is this Big Blood". Which makes sense. I also like this track.

Wed. 1/16/08 3:54pm From: maria

Yeah- JT- It seems like they're trying to throw us off their trail, but no, we wont be fooled, no matter how many times they change their name

Wed. 1/16/08 4:03pm From: maria

rooopsss

Wed. 1/16/08 4:11pm From: Doug

Maria, lve the show... nothing like it in Philly area

Wed. 1/16/08 4:20pm From: JT

I'm a JT, but not that JT. I live in Maine.

Wed. 1/16/08 4:23pm From: Sean Daily

JT, how JT would say you are on a scale of JT-ness?

Wed. 1/16/08 4:26pm From: Doug

I'm not sure I 'get' this Rupture thing, why not just play some dubstep without all the guitar skrangling all over it? The original producers don't get any credit this way.

Wed. 1/16/08 4:29pm From: Doug

Or share the name of the producer and the track that is playing behind the guitarist. Not saying that it's necessarily bad, just it sucks for the producer having his credit effectively stolen by Rupture.

Wed. 1/16/08 4:32pm From: JT

Oh, I'm at least two thirds of a six pack of JT. I don't know how that translates into James Taylor units, however.

Wed. 1/16/08 4:32pm From: tom

Beefhart and Zappa continue to influence

Wed. 1/16/08 4:34pm From: north guinea hills

doug, would you say the same thing for john cage and david tudor for the sound sources in their variations iv?

is the manipulation and contextualization which creates what makes it anew.

Wed. 1/16/08 4:37pm From: north guinea hills

fudruckers, i should have preceded 'is' w/ 'it'

Wed. 1/16/08 4:41pm From: Phillytom

There is no such thing as going to the "association" well too often!

Wed. 1/16/08 4:43pm From: north guinea hills

(note to self, preview for grammar next time). replace creates w/ is...... grimble grumble!

Wed. 1/16/08 4:49pm From: Doug

That's an interesting question. Christian Marclay etc., too. It's the same as the old copyright question of exactly what is fair use and what is a derivative work... I feel like Rupture is taking enough from the records he's playing and not altering them substantially enough to warrant a mention of the original artist. I wouldn't make a mixtape and not put a playlist on it - it would make it look like I was claiming those works as my own.

Wed. 1/16/08 4:54pm From: Doug

OMG I LOVE this song! Thanks for spinning this Maria!

Wed. 1/16/08 4:54pm From: north guinea hills

when i make mixtapes w/ 3-4 turntables and other media, the resultant schematic of authorship i create often becomes very convoluted.

in most of /rupture's previous 'abstracted' turntablism, he has given credit to his sound sourced.

in the end, i see no difference to a manipulated string vibrating and a manipulated sample. it's all a sound source.

if you take it far enough, the designer and/or craftsman of the 'instrument' deserves as much credit for the sound source as the musician who 'creates' it.

Wed. 1/16/08 4:57pm From: Todd 76%

Just for another perspective, I'm in a band that was sampled extensively w/o permission or credit by Eye from the Boredoms for a Hanatarash track...when we found out, we were honored!

Wed. 1/16/08 4:58pm From: Doug

I agree with you completely, NGH. However, what I've heard of the Rupture record that Ken and Maria have been playing has mostly been a single dubstep track with guitar solo over it - not a hell of a lot of manipulation going on. That said, I do agree with you in principle and there's probably more going on than I'm hearing...

Wed. 1/16/08 4:59pm From: Doug

Sorry to spam the comments here but I have to recommend that you check out the Vijaya Anand videos that are available on YouTube.

Wed. 1/16/08 5:00pm From: north guinea hills

i'm not sure of the "live in france" album, but in the past /rupture made his own dubplates for his live sets.

Wed. 1/16/08 5:02pm From: Doug

Live in France contains some tracks I recognize from my own collection.

PS This one in particular http://youtube.com/watch?v=_Hq1zDbLXno

Wed. 1/16/08 5:10pm From: g

I'm definitely not a proponent of a 100% "permissioned" culture (having to get a release or a license for every snippet of "content" one uses in another work) but if we're going to redesign the existing intellectual property laws in this country, putting aside $$ for a second, at a bare minimum there should be an attribution right for artists, similar to the moral rights concept in France . . .

Wed. 1/16/08 5:11pm From: north guinea hills

w/ the whole debate put aside, it really makes me blue in the face when dj's claim that the tracks they are playing are 'secrets'. it's a disservice to the original artists and it makes the dj look like a pompous ass. open source info for crate digging

Wed. 1/16/08 5:12pm From: north guinea hills

g, i agree

Wed. 1/16/08 5:18pm From: g

what I love about wfmu is that the djs seem pretty squarely opposed to the idea of dj "secrecy" (i.e. hipsterism), which is the hippest point of view of all . . .

Wed. 1/16/08 5:25pm From: Doug

I hate white labels and dubplates. But only because I'm jealous.

Wed. 1/16/08 5:25pm From: maria

aside from making like a pompous ass, the secrecy stance is a really easy balloon to pop- a really lame way to attmpt to gain status or whatever

Wed. 1/16/08 5:31pm From: north guinea hills

nice analogy, maria. i've popped that balloon before (trainspotted a mute dj).

y'all have a sumptuous awesome evening!

Wed. 1/16/08 5:36pm From: Todd 76%

Great show as usual, Maria! Farley "Jackmaster" Funk & Jessie Saunders - Love Can't Turn Around is an amazing remake of that Isaac Hayes track you just played, w/ one of the most over-the-top, gospel-inflected vocal performances I've ever heard. Bet you'd love it!

Wed. 1/16/08 5:38pm From: rolf

there's chewing gum popped under the mixing desk

Wed. 1/16/08 5:39pm From: amiar

rooops misfire cues again!!!!

Wed. 1/16/08 5:47pm From: maria

Thanks Todd 76-- I will look for it

Wed. 1/16/08 5:57pm From: daniel spaniel

this song is great. (guardian angel) the conductor in the background reminds me of this conductor i get occasionally on the weekends on (i think) the a/c line who is extremely nice, warm and verbose. another great subway song is by IRT (interbor rhythm team) about the ride from south ferry and heights of wealth to the "last stop" in Harlem. Can't remember the title at the moment. I heard it on Billy Jam's show.

Thu. 1/17/08 2:57am From: punjab

Enjoyed the show Maria.

That Aatavu Chanda cut is on Asia Classics I from David Byrne's Luaka Bop label. Luaka Bop has these credits for the song:

Lyrics by Chi. Udayashanker
Performed by S.P. Balasubrahmanyam & Manjula Guru

This song is also on Luaka Bop's Zero Accidents on the Job 10 Year retrospective 2 CD set.
