Formed in 1990, Roksonaki is believed to have been the very first Kazakh folk-rock band. Founder Ruslan Karin took ancient epic poems and backed them up with traditional and electric instruments, blending traditional melodies with elements of jazz, rock and prog-rock.
The band was a smash at its US debut at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in 2002 and is currently on its first full-blown US tour (performing as an acoustic three-piece).
