Listener comments!

  9:06am Bad Ronald:

Morning!
  9:09am kim:

i like the ahhhaahahaha and woahooahohoh stuff so much
  9:23am Vivian:

Morning Doug:

Shall we expect an Eddy Arnold set at some point during the show?
  9:28am Doug:

VIv, That would be a reasonable thing to expect -- but no! No memorials today. Just didn't feel it. No disrespects to Mr. Arnold, of course.
  9:34am paul in u.k:

great sunny afternoon music.thanks Doug
  9:36am dlroth:

morning doug!

got any luther thomas?
  9:40am ?:

No offense takin'. Enjoying this morning's set. I'm thinking today's show will be the background music while I work on the downstairs bathroom.
  9:40am mike:

Concerning Luz Y Fuerza, and to quote from the Monk tv show episode when he goes down to Mexico: "Drugs, it's always the drugs..." Nice cover though.
  9:40am Doug:

Diroth,
Luther Thomas! I didn't bring any with me, but I will run into the library and see if anything fits what I've got coming up. I'll say it again: Luther Thomas!
  9:41am Vivian:

Whoops! 'Fessin up, I'm the Question Mark.
  9:44am andreas:

sunny berlin thanks, too!
  9:49am Cecile:

Luther Thomas! Funky Donkey!

Right? The B.A.G. Luther Thomas?

Human Arts Ensemble would be cools, too.
  9:56am fred:

Doug, thanks for that Screaming Jay Hawkins cut. He's so often put on display as a kind of freak -- he had some part in this -- it's refreshing to see someone remember his other sides.
  9:56am Hugo:

Yes, the BAG and the HAE are definitely cool. Didn't the Unheard Music series on Atavistic rerelase the Funky Donkey album recently?
  9:59am Cecile:

Yes, about 7 or 8 yrs ago. Great stuff.
  10:14am James:

Doug, for someone who always rocks the proverbial house, you are REALLY rockin' the house today... must get my hands on that Savannah Churchill track!!!
  10:25am dc pat:

Interesting take on the Hill's persistence. Maybe you're right, but something in her face makes me think it's beyond anything reasonable.
  10:45am dlroth:

YEEEE HAWWWWWWWW
  10:45am GUMBY:

Kitty, Hank pain pouring out the speakers, rain pouring down out my office window. Ah, perfect misery.
  10:46am Bad Ronald:

Yes, YEE HAW indeed!
  10:50am raissa:

jimmy giuffre to hawkins and hawkshaw- why don't more people dj like this!? thanks doug!
  11:00am Doug:

Hey gang,
Here's a link to my latest blog post:
http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2008/05/fine-records-on.html
Tons of great gospel MP3s for dowloading. Enjoy!
  11:00am Mark:

Morning Doug... Just tuning in now. Thanks for playing Mr. Neil!
  11:04am rob:

lovely snock song from my favorite hurley lp
  11:06am Hugo:

Gosh, I've got that one by Hurley. There was another one from about the same time featuring Hurley and the Unholy Modal Rounders and more, called "Have Moicy". Fun stuff.
  11:06am Doug:

James,
It looks like that Savannah Churchill record is available for download here:
http://tinyurl.com/4sym3e
  11:07am Bad Ronald:

Hallelujah!!! TX Doug.
  11:09am Mark:

Souled American.... Thank you
  11:12am jonathan:

man, this song is so dreamy and lazy and great!
  11:17am Jim:

oh man, some fine bill fay, just what San Francisco called for.
  11:18am Matt:

Just when I thought this set couldn't get better you go and play Bill Fay! Awesome!
  11:18am Cecile:

I am glad everyone else is digging this.
I am personally looking forward to some ear-shredding, adrenalin-pumping, spirit-lifting FIRE MUSIC.
  11:18am jim:

Doug, don't know if something like Arthur Russell's world of Echo fits into your universe here (I think it should), but there is a lot of renewed interest in AR at the moment - a new documentary film is screening @ the kitchen, and the Kitchen itself is having some mini weekend retrospective of russell, etc.
  11:19am Hugo:

Nice set of songer-songwriters there. Maybe we'll have some of my faves from the old days: Roy Harper and Kevin Coyne. Not yer average English gentlemen!
  11:20am Cecile:

oooh, liquid liquid!
  11:24am Doug:

Jim,
I am a late but devoted convert to the Church of Russell. How perfect is it that the documentary is premiering at The Kitchen. I guess the Mudd Club wasn't available,
  11:27am Hugo:

Ah, so that's where Dave Mandl got his show title!
  11:31am Hugo:

Always fine to hear some South-African on the show. I was listening last night to Johnny Mbizo Dyani's "Grandmother's Teaching" where he got to demonstrate his considerable talents as a very expressive vocalist on the title track! Stirring!
  11:39am Listener Dave from NH:

The tough part about Arthur Russell (for me) can be figuring out all the aliases that he recorded under. I was listening to Dinky's Resident Advisor podcast from a month or so ago and thinking that the track by Indian Ocean that opened up the mix sounded a heck of a lot like Arthur Russell and, sure enough, it was him.
  11:41am john in chicago:

maybe its the coffeeeee, but this could be the best set ever?
  11:42am reid:

what was that phone recording? was that real?
  11:45am Doug:

I'm guessing that the phone call bit was a parody presented on some "morning zoo" type radio show in South Africa. Despite the hilarity, the subject matter is devastating.

We all have the exalted Listener Hugo to thank for sending that one in (too).
  11:49am g:

Doug (or anyone else),

Have you checked out one of the other Benin-specific afro-funk comps ("Kings of Urban Groove" or something like that)? Does it sound like this? If so, I gotta check that too . . .
  11:49am James:

Thanks Doug! I got my grubby little hands on that Savannah Churchill download!
  11:53am Doug:

G,
Are you talking about the T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo "Kings of Benin"? FANTASTIC!!
  11:55am g:

think that's it. I will check. thx
  11:55am Ted from Baltimore:

Crap, I wanted that African Scream Contest track to last the rest of the day. Thanks for another great show Doug.
  12:01pm Ike:

Damn, I missed the African scream contest. That's what I get for going to the bathroom and spending time sabotaging the building maintenance Nazis' attempts to keep the bathroom doors locked at all times for no reason whatsoever. (There's already too much security for any bums to get in.)
  12:05pm Hugo:

Yeah, the T.P. Polyrythmo comp is also out on the Soundway label (with the Nigeria comps).

As for the fake phone call, I got it from a colleague who got it from an acquaintance in Mozambique who got it from ... you know the story ...
