"Monkees is the craziest people!"

Wed. 5/21/08 12:13pm From: ken

Somehow, someway - I don't know TOKENS. Never heard of them.
Really.

Wed. 5/21/08 12:14pm From: Bad Ronald

Hi Tony - If your taking requests can you please play The Left Banke's "Pretty Ballerina" ?

Wed. 5/21/08 12:17pm From: Jonathan Steinke

Tokens sang "Lion Sleeps Tonight".

Wed. 5/21/08 12:18pm From: Dead Corporate Eyes

Traffic was ahead of its time with that clock winding thing.

Wed. 5/21/08 12:19pm From: Jonathan Steinke

A+, Tony!!

Wed. 5/21/08 12:19pm From: mike

what does that clock winding remind me of?... is there an olivia tremor control song with that sound?

Wed. 5/21/08 12:20pm From: Webhamster Henry

Traffic ! That really makes me feel old!

Wed. 5/21/08 12:21pm From: Dead Corporate Eyes

very likely OTC but I can't think where or when!

Wed. 5/21/08 12:25pm From: Andrew

Tony-I'm super psyched to see a realtime playlist!
Sweetens the Tony Coulter Experience...if that's even possible!

Wed. 5/21/08 12:30pm From: Bruce

Floyd on loud ear buds in my cubicle. Oh wow.

Wed. 5/21/08 12:32pm From: Kat

Tony Coulter is God!

Wed. 5/21/08 12:33pm From: fishmonkestew

Remember a Day. Excellent! And I agree about the realtime playlist. Very nice.

Wed. 5/21/08 12:33pm From: Bad Ronald

Tony - No appologies necessary.

Wed. 5/21/08 12:34pm From: Cecile

Tony, you should go into business as a radio consultant. and reinvent classic rock. Great stuff.

Wed. 5/21/08 12:35pm From: spaniel

who is this pink floyd i've been hearing so much about?

oh, man, shoot, i missed the monkeys.

Wed. 5/21/08 12:36pm From: mike

the worm!

Wed. 5/21/08 12:37pm From: giraffe-o

What a fantastic set so far! Obscure stuff from some obscure & not-so-esoteric bands. Personal anectode : I'm not a thorough fan of Pink Floyd or Zep, but 2 lesser known songs I've recently gotten my teeth into : "Fearless" by Pink, and "Ten Years Gone" by Zep

Wed. 5/21/08 12:37pm From: Ike

Cecile: Only soulless, tasteless husks are permitted to become commercial radio consultants.

The Worm ROCKS! Or not. Some of this isn't really my bag but I love seeing the accu-playlist. That Monkees track was awesome.

Wed. 5/21/08 12:40pm From: Cecile

Tony, I don't know how you feel about Santana, but i love the cuts he used to have Babtunde Olatunji on...

Wed. 5/21/08 12:46pm From: Bad Ronald

Cream YES!!!

Wed. 5/21/08 12:46pm From: dc pat

ok, first time I've heard the Doors on FMU.

Wed. 5/21/08 12:47pm From: Bad Ronald

*wonders* will the Beatles make the cut?

Wed. 5/21/08 12:48pm From: Droll

I've died and gone to AM Gold heaven.

Wed. 5/21/08 12:49pm From: Michael

Listening to Cream's World of Pain, and am hearing Elvis Costello's "London's Brilliant Parade" from Brutal Youth.

Wed. 5/21/08 12:49pm From: west coast william

Beatles - Flying
Genesis - Harold the Barrel
King Crimson - Exiles, or Happy Family
:)

Wed. 5/21/08 12:49pm From: mike

i could see "it's all too much" or "you know my name, look up the number" making the cut

Wed. 5/21/08 12:50pm From: dc pat

I'd say Beatles - You Know My Name

Wed. 5/21/08 12:50pm From: Bad Ronald

nice correlation Michael

Wed. 5/21/08 12:51pm From: Gigantor

Ooh, playing "name that band" is fun! Some great stuff-thanks Tony.

Wed. 5/21/08 12:51pm From: Cecile

I vote for Hey Bulldog.

Wed. 5/21/08 12:51pm From: Bad Ronald

I'd go with a GH tune for like - "You Like Me Too Much"

Wed. 5/21/08 12:51pm From: ZippyD

Great show!!!!! Now I 've got to dig out my Cream vinyl.

Wed. 5/21/08 12:53pm From: Bad Ronald

... or "I need You"

Wed. 5/21/08 12:54pm From: Marcy

Hooray for playlists! I hope that you keep using them when the jams turn back toward the less familiar...

Wed. 5/21/08 12:54pm From: m

just tuning in now... can someone inform me as to the theme of today's programme?

Wed. 5/21/08 12:55pm From: Cecile

Rock by classic rockers that hasn't been overplayed to the point of pain...

Wed. 5/21/08 12:55pm From: Bad Ronald

not so classic rock

Wed. 5/21/08 12:55pm From: Bad Ronald

classy rock?

Wed. 5/21/08 12:57pm From: m

sounds great!

Wed. 5/21/08 12:57pm From: Kat

No Crome Syrcus?

Wed. 5/21/08 12:58pm From: Bad Ronald

Keith Moon is on this track by JB

Wed. 5/21/08 12:59pm From: dc pat

I was about to say--I forgot Moon played drums on this but you can hear him yelling

Wed. 5/21/08 1:00pm From: Bad Ronald

Apparently he knocked over one of his mics during the session.

Wed. 5/21/08 1:02pm From: dc pat

what a guy. You can watch a Moon documentary in about 6 parts on YouTube. He was truly insane.

Wed. 5/21/08 1:02pm From: spaniel

this show's a lot of fun. i think you stole my mom's record collection. one of my favorites from my intro to music/high school days was Jefferson Airplane's "after bathing at baxters" (the whole album is like one long story, man).

Wed. 5/21/08 1:04pm From: Bad Ronald

I think there's a movie in the works where Mike Myers will star as Moonie.

Wed. 5/21/08 1:05pm From: dc pat

ho-jeeze, don't know about that casting decision..

Wed. 5/21/08 1:06pm From: Happy Listener

Thanks for playing some of my favorite classic rock tracks, Tony! I love the first 4 DP albums, but not much else of theirs moves me.

Wed. 5/21/08 1:08pm From: Bad Ronald

I agree wholeheartedly DCP.

Wed. 5/21/08 1:08pm From: giraffe-o

Who's singing on this D.P. song?

Wed. 5/21/08 1:10pm From: Greg in DC

Great show. Here are a few suggestions (based on what I may have had on my LP stack at any moment way back then):

Mothers, Jefferson Airplane, WHO, Electric Prunes, Shadows of Night, Young Rascals, Stones (Satanic Majesty's Request or Flowers), Fever Tree, Savoy Brown

Wed. 5/21/08 1:11pm From: dc pat

They should get an unknown ENGLISH actor and do something truly creative with it. But won't happen...another Doors movie in the making...

Wed. 5/21/08 1:13pm From: dc pat

My dad came home from work one day w/ 2 Iron Butterfly albums. That was his entire connection w/ rock and roll--beginning to end. Still don't know what possessed him....

Wed. 5/21/08 1:14pm From: Kat

I would have preferred "Unconscious Power" myself, but hey, no worries. Great show!

Wed. 5/21/08 1:17pm From: Zach in Philly

Over The Top Genius! I am blown away by the oh-so-subtle execution of the Class Ick Rahk theme. And an accuplaylist to boot! It feels like I've been slipped two pills of wowie-zowie medication.

Wed. 5/21/08 1:17pm From: Bad Ronald

Burn Hollywood Burn!

Wed. 5/21/08 1:20pm From: Droll

If Clear-acom classic rock stations played this set, they could tell you how much money they were losing per 20 minute block. Fortunately, I only patronize shops which advertise and underwrite on WFMU, and they all say bring on the Gentle Giant!

Wed. 5/21/08 1:30pm From: Bad Ronald

Alice Cooper - "Muscle of Love" or "Woman Machine" would be kinda cool...

Wed. 5/21/08 1:31pm From: Parq

Late to the party, but whoa - all this and a comment-enabled acuplaylist too!

Wed. 5/21/08 1:34pm From: Denise in Washington, DC

Holy crap. You actually played something from Janis Ian's The Secret Life of J. Eddy Fink. (Who I assume is Ian herself, since her real last name is Fink -- she borrowed her brother's middle name for her last name.) IAE, I'm amazed to hear a radio station playing anything *at all* by Ian other than "At Seventeen" -- much less a cut from a long-out-of-print obscurity like "Secret Life of . . ." Tony Coulter, I love you, whether or not you're related to Ann.

Wed. 5/21/08 1:37pm From: Bad Ronald

There's Alice - nice one tx Tony

Wed. 5/21/08 1:38pm From: Will in Paris

You are an archeologist!!!
I actually played Beck's bolero in my bedroom 2 nights ago.
I can't believe anyone else even remembers it.
Also, your set reminds me of an album of some Swedish organist
who had an album inspired by Lord of the Rings way back in the late 70's, I was a young teen at the time.

Wed. 5/21/08 1:40pm From: Cecile

ZOMG, BOC.

Great theme!

Wed. 5/21/08 1:41pm From: jtm

Tony, thanks for a great show and for the live playlist. please start doing the comment playlist every week!

Wed. 5/21/08 1:42pm From: AnAnonymousParty

Man, this almost makes me wish I smoked pot again.

Wed. 5/21/08 1:42pm From: fishmonkeystew

She's as Beautiful as a Foot? bwahahahahahaha!!!! That is AWESOME!

Wed. 5/21/08 1:45pm From: Roger

I am loving your set, but I am also reminded why only certain songs ever really penetrate and last. A lot of these cuts are just that, album cuts. But, play on, I'm enjoying every single one of them.

Wed. 5/21/08 1:46pm From: Cecile

LOVE THIS KINKS SONG

Wed. 5/21/08 1:47pm From: dc pat

Perfect Kinks choice...beautiful.

Wed. 5/21/08 1:47pm From: Marcy

Will in Paris- that's Bo Hansson "Sagan Om Ringen." Hot stuff!

Wed. 5/21/08 1:50pm From: Jake in Atlanta

Great great show Tony! Never heard you before but I'll be listening every week now.

Wed. 5/21/08 1:53pm From: Dead Corporate Eyes

Most depressing Neil Young album EVER!!

Wed. 5/21/08 1:53pm From: Cecile

Yeah, ain't it great?

Wed. 5/21/08 1:54pm From: Parq

Ah yes, "On the Beach" -- was that a rocket sticking out of the sand or the fender of a 50s car?

Wed. 5/21/08 1:55pm From: Bad Ronald

a car

Wed. 5/21/08 1:57pm From: Denise in Washington, DC

OMG, *Bread*!!!! I never thought I'd hear Bread played on 'FMU, except maybe on the Incorrect Music Show. You have thrilled me to the core.

Wed. 5/21/08 1:58pm From: Gigantor

Can't say I've heard "Bread" on FMU either, thankfully. Though this is an excellent pick if you are going to!

Wed. 5/21/08 2:00pm From: dc pat

how 'bout Love - Signed DC

Wed. 5/21/08 2:00pm From: Denise in Washington, DC

This whole set makes me want to put on bell-bottoms and a leather choker with a peace symbol on it and go wander barefoot through the park in the rain.

Wed. 5/21/08 2:01pm From: Bad Ronald

and protest the war

Wed. 5/21/08 2:01pm From: AnAnonymousParty

This show is like a box of chocolates . . .

Wed. 5/21/08 2:04pm From: Denise in Washington, DC

Well, Bad Ronald, I'm doing that anyway.

Wed. 5/21/08 2:05pm From: Bad Ronald

I thought so, just wanted to make sure...

Wed. 5/21/08 2:05pm From: Bruce

Actually, I think FMU thrives on the obscure - music produced for the love of it. Still, a fun show.

Wed. 5/21/08 2:06pm From: taste_is_relative

Ah - Manfred Mann. The only band, other than Golden Earring, to be a 1-hit wonder across 2 different genres/eras

Wed. 5/21/08 2:09pm From: Denise in Washington, DC

Golden Earring had more than one hit?

Wed. 5/21/08 2:09pm From: Bad Ronald

This Faces tune sounds like the Move.

Wed. 5/21/08 2:10pm From: Will in Paris

Marcy, whatta memory! Bo Hansson! Ohmygod, that was even before I started smoking pot, and I haven't smoked pot for several decades.
I'm trying to get my young French brother-in-laws hooked into WFMU.

Wed. 5/21/08 2:10pm From: Dead Corporate Eyes

Twilight Zone and Radar Love

Wed. 5/21/08 2:13pm From: Parq

Bruce, I think that's the point. On a station where everybody plays obscurities, how do you break out of the pack? And to play classic rock without playing any "Classic Rock" - what a challenge. And, may I add, Tony is stepping up to it magnificently.

Wed. 5/21/08 2:15pm From: Jonathan Steinke

Tommy Roe...Tommy Roe...hmm. A name I finally CAN'T place. Great song nonetheless!

Wed. 5/21/08 2:21pm From: greg in DC

Dizzy, I'm so dizzy

Wed. 5/21/08 2:22pm From: Mike B.

Umm... i never thought the day would come. GD? i'm confused all over again.
::lifts jaw::

Wed. 5/21/08 2:22pm From: Denise in Washington, DC

Ah -- I didn't realize Golden Earring did "Twilight Zone." Thanks, DCE.

Wed. 5/21/08 2:22pm From: Dead Corporate Eyes

Anthem of the Sun rules.

Wed. 5/21/08 2:25pm From: Jim

Whoa, same here, Grateful Dead?

Wed. 5/21/08 2:26pm From: E.K.

Oh for the days when the harpsichord was a pop instrarment

Wed. 5/21/08 2:29pm From: Dead Corporate Eyes

don't be hatin on the Dead...it's not THEIR fault!!

Wed. 5/21/08 2:30pm From: Parq

Bark - what a terrific, under-rated album!

Wed. 5/21/08 2:32pm From: jim frm b-burg

Tony, you have a great ear!

thanks.

Wed. 5/21/08 2:33pm From: Mike B.

Well who/what is to blame? I finally just sorted all this out.

Wed. 5/21/08 2:36pm From: Dead Corporate Eyes

people who need people

Wed. 5/21/08 2:38pm From: Denise in Washington, DC

I don't think I realized until now just how much every ELO song sounds like every other ELO song.

Wed. 5/21/08 2:43pm From: JJZ

Not many other bands have strings, that helps.

Wed. 5/21/08 2:44pm From: Denise in Washington, DC

This Mamas and Papas song is the first one I've actually recognized -- was thinking that it's played on other broadcast stations, but then realized I've probably heard it on LuxuriaMusic.com.

JJZ, I was also thinking about ELO's voice distortion.

Wed. 5/21/08 2:45pm From: Webhamster Henry

Tony, You don't suppose you could do this, say , once a month all summer, could you?

Wed. 5/21/08 2:45pm From: mike

this show is skewing 60s, methinks. when will we hear the hidden chestnuts from the eagles and peter frampton? how bout a long lost zeppelin sound collage?!

Wed. 5/21/08 2:46pm From: Will in Paris

Recently, My youngest French brother-in-law gave us a copie of the Beatles White Album. Whereas, I can't say that I'll listen to it a whole lot, it really did establish the architecture for almost all the pop to come.
This show reminds of me of this thought that came to me the last time that I listened to the White Album.
In another vein, I tried to see if "New hope for the Wretched" by the Plasmatics exists as a CD.

Wed. 5/21/08 2:47pm From: Denise in Washington, DC

Okay, this is a decent song by The Association . . . but I would have preferred hearing "Rose Petals, Incense, and a Kitten," from the LP Birthday.

Wed. 5/21/08 2:48pm From: Dead Corporate Eyes

I wonder if Beachwood Sparks took their name sort of from this song.

Wed. 5/21/08 2:50pm From: Zach in Philly

Mike, I've been holding my breath for a track from either Zepplin or Dylan. Three hours goes pretty fast. I definately second the notion to do this again sometime over the summer! But we've had so far is pretty captain fantastic!

Wed. 5/21/08 2:52pm From: Droll

Will in Paris, I love the White Album, but isn't it really a snapshot of pop music as it was, not an architecture for the future? There used to be stories that the Beatles were aping other contemporary bands' styles in tribute. Examples include Back in the USSR (Beach Boys), Let's Do It In The Road (The Doors), Piggies (Pink Floyd)... A fun exercise for a new way to hear an old classic.

Wed. 5/21/08 2:53pm From: Mike B

people do need people.

Wed. 5/21/08 2:54pm From: mike

yes, america, this is more like it! (though that was totally 60s yes)

Wed. 5/21/08 2:55pm From: Dead Corporate Eyes

my parents played this one when I was wee-bitty and it made me love that California sound that gets so slammed by the ultra-hip. still sounds good to me though.

Wed. 5/21/08 2:55pm From: Bad Ronald

People need peep holes.

Wed. 5/21/08 2:56pm From: Dead Corporate Eyes

actually they were totally 70s, this album was '72 I think

Wed. 5/21/08 2:56pm From: Denise in Washington, DC

America was definitely 70s. I should know -- I discovered them while I was in high school, which I started in 1970. I had every one of their "heavy" LPs, and memorized 'em all. Love these lyrics -- "orange funnels, snowy tunnels, summer troubles, books in bundles, and you."

Wed. 5/21/08 2:57pm From: Bad Ronald

Did George Martin produce all of their albums?

Wed. 5/21/08 2:57pm From: Will in Paris

Droll, well yeah, your right but I aslo feel I'm right. A lot of songs
in this set might never have been without the White Album
( am I sticking my neck out or what?) Even Helter Skelter has a Punk edge to it.

Wed. 5/21/08 3:00pm From: Denise in Washington, DC

Good question, Ronald. Amazon doesn't say. It does reveal, however, that "Homecoming" was originally released in 1973.

Wed. 5/21/08 3:01pm From: Dead Corporate Eyes

oh, thx Denise, I always wondered what the hell that guy was saying during that part. you would laugh to hear what I thought he was saying!!

Wed. 5/21/08 3:15pm From: fp cassini

does anyone have advice as to how to capture/record this awesome stream for later listening?

Wed. 5/21/08 3:43pm From: Bad Ronald

Thanks Denise.

fp cassini - you should be able to revisit the show on wfmu archives section.

Wed. 5/21/08 6:41pm From: lissner monica

i loved it. elton john has some great non-hits.

Wed. 5/21/08 7:49pm From: Cozmic Eddie

A marvelous and ultimately successful exercise. This something I periodically do on my own program, sneaking in a winner from a group otherwise disregarded.

Did we attend secondary school together in Massachusetts? Just wondering...

Fri. 5/23/08 3:45pm From: Kay

You've heard of xmradio's Fred rock programming format and Ethel.

I think we've seen the birth of the Tony rawk format. Long live Tony!

Thank you indeed for this very nice music!!!
Best wishes from Russia!

Great playlist! If possible, I'd like to include Daevid Allen's "Rich Girl", a fantastic slice of psych insanity!
