Jeanne Lee, an obvious choice. From my part of the woods, I would recommend Maja Ratkje (who has collaborated with Jaap Blonk among others). Saw her a couple of weeks back and had a brief chat afterwards.

Doug, you may be interested in a chapter on those post-surgical infections in Atul Guwande's most recent book, "Better." There is an irony in the contrast between all our medical technology and skill on the one hand, and the fact that these infections are spread simply because people don't wash their hands. I'm glad to hear that your father recovered. Anyway, the chapter is most interesting, as is the whole book.

I read the piece from Atul's book in the New Yorker. I have been following the various issues concerning hand-washing and the simple checklists medical personnel should follow doing basic things like inserting IV lines and such. Amazingly, there is huge resistance from the hospital community on instituting checklists. It's fucking nuts!

The Voyage reminds me of that Lalo Schifflin piece The Chains. Both contain that awful imagry of the African slaves voyage accross the Oceans. Stunning work to convert the image to sound, but terrible that it is necessary to document.

May I inject a small counter-point? Decades ago, before my own kid was born, I volunteered in the neo-natal ICU of a local hospital. Hand-scrubbing was a diligently enforced requirement. If you moved from one baby to another, you did a three minute scrub first. If you forgot yourself and touched something on the floor, you did a three minute scrub before you did anything further.

Oiga, I'm not gainsaying anything anyone else is saying. I just want to point out that there are small pockets of good medical sense being practiced out there.

The Hernan Rocha was, apparently, way "out of phase." I got frantic calls from multiple people in the FMU office upstairs. I am hearing the feed right off the control board, not the actual air signal, so I couldn't hear it. Had to to abort.

one of the people at the desk next to me is a young, Indian intern, she is practically singing along with all your selections. You're doing something right. She knows them all, though she said Baghon Mein Bahar Hai was something her dad listens to. And Dheem Thana Thana Nana was South Indian.
