Playlist for The Evan "Funk" Davies Show - September 9, 2008

Tuesdays 11pm - 2am on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

Starting with the 70s -- it could be a classic (or obscure) punk rocker, a forgotten disco diva, a long-unheard hit record, or none of these. What happens next depends on what's in the WFMU new bin and whether I remember my records from home. Tune in and find out! You'll even hear a live band once in a while.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:06pm From: john

These guys canadian? That's one weird-ass nasal accent.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:07pm From: Sybil

Well, this song is something else!

Tue. 9/9/08 11:07pm From: Jessica

Peter DeLuise, nee McNichol?

Tue. 9/9/08 11:08pm From: Sybil

Quebecquois I do believe

Tue. 9/9/08 11:08pm From: efd

Candian, mais oui! That would be one Lucien Francoeur on the vocals.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:09pm From: efd

points to Sybil for the band name pun.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:09pm From: Rene

Wow. Is aut'chose the name of the band or the song.

Oh blistering barnacles! It's Beth Ditto!!

Tue. 9/9/08 11:10pm From: john

Yeah, the singer sounded like one of our Neighbors To The North (TM). And welcome to the Tuesday Night French Club meeting. Sybil, I think it was your turn to bring croissants.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:11pm From: Rene

Beth I hear you calling but I can't come home right now.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:12pm From: Sybil

Merde, all I have is this poutine...

Tue. 9/9/08 11:13pm From: Dom & Pete

You've managed to bring us back together, Flag. We'll be eternally grateful. You're welcome to a meal at Dom's anytime!

Tue. 9/9/08 11:13pm From: Jessica

Gossip gives me whiplash.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:14pm From: efd

it's a hazard of listening to the efd show.

Is Peter McNichol related to Kristy and Jimmy?

Tue. 9/9/08 11:14pm From: john

Ooooh, poutine. Get all the basic food groups there. Got your grease, your starch, your fat. Oh, and gravy. That's four.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:15pm From: Jessica

He should be. Especially as Jimmy is who I imagined when I typed that. He does have the McNichol nose, come to think of it...

Tue. 9/9/08 11:16pm From: ?

F-k!! Today's show is making me so very happy!!

Tue. 9/9/08 11:16pm From: efd

thank you, mystery self-censoring commenter!

Tue. 9/9/08 11:17pm From: Rene

"Poutine" has to be the most lascivious sounding name for a food item EVER.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:17pm From: efd

Sybil, what happened with Papelbon tonight? I was trying to follow the game on yahoo while getting ready for the show... got all excited only to have it washed away minutes later.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:18pm From: Rene

oh you're welcome Evan. twas I that accidentally self-censored.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:20pm From: Sybil

Papelbon... I don't know. I got distracted for a moment, and then it was 5-4. I missed whatever happened.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:20pm From: Jessica

Department S = tasty! Reminds me of The Sturm Group (also Canadian. they sounded bigger than they looked: http://tinyurl.com/5b7mz2)

Tue. 9/9/08 11:20pm From: john

It may be a lascivious name, but visually it's sort of the equivalent of abstinence-only education.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:22pm From: randy in NC

I guess the American Breed was the reply to the British Invasion

Tue. 9/9/08 11:23pm From: efd

in keeping with my new nickname.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:24pm From: john

Now I'm looking for places in LA that serve poutine, dammit. Knew I should have had dinner before the show.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:25pm From: eattothebeat

The Rays made a deal with the devil.
That is what happened.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:25pm From: Sybil

They gave the devil his name back?

In other news, Yoyo got a win tonight.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:27pm From: C

that movie trailer tom played was insane. i seriously thought it was made up. maybe it makes more sense if you see the video along with it because tom didn't seem too bothered by it. not sure about imax, but definitely netflix on that one

Tue. 9/9/08 11:28pm From: efd

alright, hooray for Yoyo! Keeping the Braves out of the cellar.

Oh, that reminds me - who won the second Jays-Chisox game?

Tue. 9/9/08 11:29pm From: john

Jays sweep, took the second game 8-2

Tue. 9/9/08 11:29pm From: Sybil

Toronto 3-1

Tue. 9/9/08 11:29pm From: Rene

the gossip serves up the poutine

Tue. 9/9/08 11:30pm From: efd

awesome! so NY is 1 1/2 behind TOR now?

I guess I should go on mic already.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:30pm From: Sybil

and what John said.

I've really got to get some sleep one of these days.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:31pm From: john

Actually 2 ahead as of right now, but Junkees up 1-0 in the 5th.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:33pm From: Sybil

Speaking of the American Breed, am I the only person who didn't know this:

In celebration of the 2005 baseball World Championship of the Chicago White Sox, the American Breed issued a CD single entitled "Rock with the Sox."

(from Wikipedia)

Tue. 9/9/08 11:37pm From: john

Sybil, if it makes you feel any better, there are at least two of us who didn't know that.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:38pm From: Laurie

Disco fries > poutine

Actually, both are vomitecore. F'real.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:38pm From: randy in NC

I think the Bend Me Shape Me was circa 1966. The first album I ever got. To be followed by Happy Jack and WInchester Cathedral,,,, I might still have the original vinyl for these lying around somewhere.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:39pm From: Erech o

What is that playing underneath Evan?

Tue. 9/9/08 11:42pm From: Droll

Google can't find an image from the cover of Aut'chose. Unlike your description of the Lief Garret cover, my curiosity is piqued, not revulsed. Please take a picture with your cell phone and mail it to yourself and post that!

Tue. 9/9/08 11:42pm From: efd

John, make that three of us. (And thanks all for the baseball updates!)

Erech, it's a loop from "Saturday NIght Fever" by the Lordz of Brooklyn.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:44pm From: Sybil

Another Manny HR.

Be funny if Joe Torre gets to the World Series this year... in a poetic justice kind of way.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:45pm From: efd

droll, do an image search on yahoo for:
aut'chose cauchemar

the two rightmost images are the front + back covers

Tue. 9/9/08 11:46pm From: randy in NC

Sybil, that's why they hired him, no?

Tue. 9/9/08 11:46pm From: Michael Ackerman

Whoa--Thomas Function!
They missed their gig at SXSW you know because the drummer was arrested.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:47pm From: efd

!
I didn't know - details plz!

Tue. 9/9/08 11:47pm From: john

Hey, my pleasure. I'm actually being anti-social in my hotel tonight with baseball and the show.

Torre will have to get through the Mets and Fountain of Youth discoverer Carlos Delgado first. Hit two more today; fans who were screaming for his release in June are chanting MVP, MVP...

Tue. 9/9/08 11:48pm From: efd

nice to have you here live btw, Michael.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:49pm From: Droll

Whoa! Mutton chops! Curiosity satisfied -- one fewer life...

(Also looking forward to learning the punchline to a new drummer joke!)

Tue. 9/9/08 11:52pm From: john

I'm sure I'm missing something here, but there's little in this world I enjoy more than a good drummer joke. Except maybe a bad one.

Tue. 9/9/08 11:53pm From: Michael Ackerman

Thanks for the welcome EFD!
Nice to be here even if it's because I'm working late

Tue. 9/9/08 11:58pm From: Michael Ackerman

Have I missed the window for requests--
How 'bout some Secret Affair?
I second Don Cavalli as a top ten album for sure

Tue. 9/9/08 11:59pm From: Michael Ackerman

That's Everloving, not Everlasting (I represent them)

Wed. 9/10/08 12:18am From: efd

the request window never closes! that said, it's rarely open much more than a crack. :) I'm not sure what Secret Affair records are in the FMU library, and I didn't bring any with me tonight but I'll see what I can find.

Wed. 9/10/08 12:23am From: efd

John, I think the drummer joke comment was in reference to the Thomas Function drummer getting arrested.. which we (ahem) still don't know anything more about.

Wed. 9/10/08 12:23am From: john

wow, that z-trip track was aut'chose!

Wed. 9/10/08 12:24am From: efd

and by the way, what's up in that Angels/Yankees game??

Wed. 9/10/08 12:25am From: john

You don't want to know. But in case you really do, Junks up 6-1 in the 8th.

Wed. 9/10/08 12:31am From: efd

hmpf. who ended up pitching for Cali?

Wed. 9/10/08 12:32am From: john

Santana started, followed by a couple stiffs. Junks started one of their hordes of Quadruple-A players.

Wed. 9/10/08 12:38am From: efd

yeah, i saw that MFY pitcher in his relief appearance 4 or 5 days ago... seems like another in the long line of Yankee pitchers (Rasner, Karstens, Geise, Ponson) who have a few good outings before falling apart.

Wed. 9/10/08 12:41am From: Michael Ackerman

The drummer from the Thomas Function is driving drunk and he gets pulled over and has, if I recall the story, a gun and a bunch of pot in his car. So he gets arrested and afterwards in explaining what happened he says "it could happen to anybody!"

Wed. 9/10/08 12:42am From: efd

that *is* a good drummer joke!

Wed. 9/10/08 12:47am From: Laurie

During the Ruby Suns set at Pitchfork, one of the douchebags from Vampire Weekend came around the front of the stage in the photographer pit and was promptly shooed away by a security guard. I lol'd.

Wed. 9/10/08 12:49am From: pete

wooo hoo Go New Zealand!

Wed. 9/10/08 12:50am From: Laurie

Just to watch! I could see him behind the stage smoking a cigarette after he was publicly shamed.

Wed. 9/10/08 12:52am From: C

agree that the thomas function song was good, and after that drummer story i definitely want to check them out live.

Wed. 9/10/08 12:53am From: Droll

Michael, thanks for the story! All stories with a drummer involve intoxication and a punchline, but it never gets stale.
To be pedantic, I know lots of functioning addicts and I'm sure getting arrested qualifies as NOT functioning. The functioning ones show up.

Wed. 9/10/08 12:56am From: Jim

Guitarded!

Wed. 9/10/08 12:57am From: Sybil

OMG Rocks in Your Head...

Wed. 9/10/08 1:03am From: efd

i know! They held on for quite a while, but i guess weren't able to to establish themselves after the move to Wmsbg.

Wed. 9/10/08 1:06am From: efd

C, glad you liked that song too.

Wed. 9/10/08 1:14am From: Michael Ackerman

Here's a punchline for you--I am a drummer
(aren't you too EFD?)

Wed. 9/10/08 1:15am From: efd

I am! And I enjoy a good drummer joke as much as the next guy.

Wed. 9/10/08 1:15am From: Sybil

me too!

Wed. 9/10/08 1:16am From: C

Yes! The OOOO. I really want to see them play next month but the ticket prices are really hard to justify (they are the best live band in the world though). There was this really strange ticketing system where you basically had to buy a fanclub package to get a decent seat too which were like $500 plus the $100+ for the ticket itself.

Wed. 9/10/08 1:16am From: john

zomg, I'm surrounded by drummers? Eek.

Wed. 9/10/08 1:28am From: efd

that's right! don't make any sudden movements, or... well... i don't know, but i'm sure there's a drummer joke in there somewhere.

Wed. 9/10/08 1:29am From: Sybil

And... the Dodgers win.

Wed. 9/10/08 1:30am From: efd

how far in front of ARI are they now?

Wed. 9/10/08 1:32am From: C

Oh yeah, thought you might appreciate this Evan. WBCN did an interview with HR of Bad Brains this afternoon that was pretty far out there. Don't think they're as on the ball with technology as FMU though, so don't think it's up yet.

Wed. 9/10/08 1:32am From: Sybil

2.5 games ahead. They just might pull this off.

Do you know there is a website devoted to drummer jokes? Not necessarily good jokes, but still...
http://www.drumjokes.com/

Wed. 9/10/08 1:33am From: john

You're right, there should be a drummer joke in there, but all I can think of is the one about how you can tell if the drum riser's level....

Wed. 9/10/08 1:38am From: Sybil

OK, this one is pretty good:

A New York drummer by the name of Joe was out of work and desperately searching for a gig. He went to the union office where they told him about plentiful jobs in Greece. "Greece?, the drummer said. The union representative replied, "Hey, do you want to work or don't you?".

So the man packed his bags and headed off to Greece. He was to meet up with an old guy by the name of Tarek at a small pub near the town of Perin. Upon his arrival, he located the pub but Tarek was nowhere to be found.

He tracked Tarek down later by phone. He said he needed him for a last minute wedding gig tonight at the Oasis hotel. There would be over 400 guests but unfortunately there wouldn't be time for a rehearsal. Tarek said, "Just show up with your drums and be ready to play." Well, the NY drummer wasn't that nervous. He he had played hundreds of wedding gigs back in New York and he was just happy to have some work.

Joe arrived at the hotel on time. The whole band was there except the band leader, Tarek. He set up his drums and patiently awaited for the old guy. Tarek finally arrived 5 minutes before they were supposed to go on. He frantically set up his music stand and raised his arm to lead the band. "Wait!, shouted the NY drummer, what are we playing?" Tarek looked at him calmly (knowing he was a professional drummer) and stated, "Just relax and give me strong backbeats on 7 and 13."

Wed. 9/10/08 1:41am From: john

Oh sure, like there was a drummer anywhere even outside NY who could count to 7.

Wed. 9/10/08 1:42am From: Laurie

So, on this messageboard, some neo-con douchebag said this in response to the news that Wasilla under Sarah Palin made rape victims pay for their rape kits: "They can decline the rape kit if they want." In response, people started posting screencaps after they donated to the Obama campaign. $750 has been donated so far with more people pledging to donate after they get paid!

Wed. 9/10/08 1:45am From: efd

Sybil that is a shaggy dog/drummer joke hybrid!

Wed. 9/10/08 1:47am From: C

Thanks for the Sarah Palin funny/scary fact of the day. Yesterday I got a kick (almost threw up) when I found out she put Van in the middle name of here son so that it sounded like Van H(P)alen. She's going to self destruct at some point, right??

Wed. 9/10/08 1:48am From: Sybil

Must be... I stole it from that website, but it's definitely the most recherche of the jokes there.

Wed. 9/10/08 1:48am From: randy in NC

Speaking of Sarah Palin, yesterday Trent played a great mashup of a Sparks song from Introducing Sparks and Sarah Palin. Check it out on the archives.

Wed. 9/10/08 1:48am From: Laurie

More info on the scary Palin story: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/eric-schmeltzer/palins-wasilla-to-rape-vi_b_125047.html

Wed. 9/10/08 1:52am From: randy in NC

C, think she's going to do an Eagleton?

Wed. 9/10/08 1:52am From: john

C, it's happening already. Just slowly and in too many different ways to list. It's offset by a general unwillingness to admit having been duped and efforts to make it all go away that are if anything even scarier, but give it time.

Wed. 9/10/08 1:53am From: john

She's half Eagleton, half Agnew. Aggleton. Eaglenew?

Wed. 9/10/08 1:53am From: C

Yeah! That mashup was awesome. And looks like Trent beat Obama to the punch in making fun of Palin's lipstick crap.

By the way, what's the difference between Peter Criss and a drummer?

Wed. 9/10/08 1:55am From: efd

I'll check out the Sparks/SPalin mashup, thanks for the tip; I didn't get to hear Trent's show last night.

Wed. 9/10/08 1:56am From: efd

i give up, C, what's the answer?

Wed. 9/10/08 1:57am From: C

Lipstick

sorry, bad joke

Wed. 9/10/08 1:58am From: efd

don't tell that to Jerry Nolan! (If he were still alive)

Wed. 9/10/08 1:59am From: Sybil

Are you somehow implying that a real drummer doesn't wear lipstick? Hmm? Hmm?

Wed. 9/10/08 2:09pm From: randy in NC

Correction, the Sparks song in the S Palin mash up is from their album In Outer Space....
