Playlist for The Evan "Funk" Davies Show - January 6, 2009

Tuesdays 11pm - 2am on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

Starting with the 70s -- it could be a classic (or obscure) punk rocker, a forgotten disco diva, a long-unheard hit record, or none of these. What happens next depends on what's in the WFMU new bin and whether I remember my records from home. Tune in and find out! You'll even hear a live band once in a while.

Listener comments!

Tue. 1/6/09 11:06pm From: Amanda

I waited for this song for three weeks, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. (If it is, indeed, the AC/DC soundalike you referred to three weeks ago.)

Tue. 1/6/09 11:07pm From: mike in SF

I'd completely forgotten about this band and this song. What a weird flashback. They used to play it on the radio in Phoenix.

Tue. 1/6/09 11:09pm From: efd

Amanda, you are correct!

Tue. 1/6/09 11:09pm From: fred from queens

you fucking ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOCK Evan!

Tue. 1/6/09 11:10pm From: john

And I'm getting a bit of a feel of early 70s Alice Cooper Group (the real one) here...

Tue. 1/6/09 11:12pm From: fred from queens

ROCK.

Tue. 1/6/09 11:13pm From: Joe

I said it last time, I'll say it this time.

WOOOO!!!

Tue. 1/6/09 11:16pm From: Sybil

Oh Joe, you do have a way with words.

Tue. 1/6/09 11:16pm From: Joe

They are also playing Rehab (formerly Club Midway) next saturday and I am going there. Presumably to say that a few more times.

Tue. 1/6/09 11:16pm From: fred from queens

I feel some Imperial Drag coming on..............

Tue. 1/6/09 11:16pm From: efd

Joe, I will see you there!!

Tue. 1/6/09 11:17pm From: superduper!

You got a comment from Fred From Queens in the Limo!

Tue. 1/6/09 11:18pm From: Joe

Awesome! I look almost exactly as you imagine me.

Tue. 1/6/09 11:19pm From: efd

little-known fact: the singer from Coney Hatch went to the Joe Lynn Turner Vocal School.

Tue. 1/6/09 11:22pm From: john

She's got a seven year itch
She's a genuine bitch
Like a one eyed jack
Stick a knife in your back

That's f'in poetry, maaaan. Wordsworth, I think. Or was it Coleridge? I can never tell the Lyrical Ballads apart.

Tue. 1/6/09 11:22pm From: Amanda

Awwwwright Absorb the Lip Gloss!!!!

Tue. 1/6/09 11:22pm From: The Intl

don't forget ron ashton tonite.

Tue. 1/6/09 11:23pm From: fred from queens

no limo actually, just my dark apartment, some cats, a needle and some damage done

Tue. 1/6/09 11:24pm From: Taylor

As Peter Gabriel had "Passion Sources", the first set of this show could be deemed "Spinal Tap Sources"

Tue. 1/6/09 11:25pm From: mb

I've been hooked on this "Lip Gloss" since Psue broke it. Go Lil Mama. I just discovered Marnie the other day too. Its all coming together.

Tue. 1/6/09 11:26pm From: Michael from the Left Coast

Bring on the Imperial Drag!

Tue. 1/6/09 11:27pm From: Sybil

Wonderful film with a wonderful soundtrack.

Tue. 1/6/09 11:29pm From: Sybil

Oh, my. Classy transition!

Tue. 1/6/09 11:29pm From: Amanda

John, I think Coney Hatch's lyricist was Lord Byron, actually. And congrats for the most highbrow playlist comment I've ever seen.

Tue. 1/6/09 11:30pm From: joe

very cool marnie stern. who mixed that one?

Tue. 1/6/09 11:32pm From: Spoony

In all seriousness, I was talking about "Lip Gloss" in an extended conversation at work today. No joke. GET OUT OF MY HEAD, DAVIS.

Tue. 1/6/09 11:33pm From: john

Amanda, incongruity is my life. I just knew it wasn't Keats.

Tue. 1/6/09 11:34pm From: Taylor

Got Benji Hughes "Neighbor Down the Hall"? I may never need another disc beyond his "A Love Extreme". Seriously.

Tue. 1/6/09 11:41pm From: The Intl

Wrong track, pal. I don't care if he's on bass here or not, 1st & 2nd lp only! Have some respect!

Tue. 1/6/09 11:46pm From: efd

Taylor, not familiar with Benji Hughes.

The Intl, sorry my selection did not conform with your narrow definition of Ron Asheton's career. You're probably not enjoying New Race either.

Tue. 1/6/09 11:57pm From: john

Awesome version, too.

Tue. 1/6/09 11:58pm From: efd

it's self-censored!

Tue. 1/6/09 11:59pm From: john

For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure she must have read Donald Hall's book Dock Ellis In The Country Of Baseball. The bit about hitting all those Reds in a row was straight out of the book. Highly recommended.

Wed. 1/7/09 12:04am From: Joe

I haven't heard any awful puns, yet. Though the song is kinda diva-esque. I dunno if that's Vilanche or Kitt, though.

Wed. 1/7/09 12:06am From: E.L.

Eat your heart out Rosemary Clooney.

Wed. 1/7/09 12:06am From: efd

boy am I glad she said "yacht."

Wed. 1/7/09 12:07am From: Sybil

No one could purr like Eartha.

Wed. 1/7/09 12:08am From: john

For what it's worth, Sybil, my cat just glared.

Wed. 1/7/09 12:12am From: E.L.

I think the most popular feature of the show is Evan inserting "ticket" into the mix.

Wed. 1/7/09 12:14am From: Sybil

E.L., we wait with baited breath each time.

Wed. 1/7/09 12:14am From: Sybil

I think I meant to say "bated breath".

Wed. 1/7/09 12:16am From: john

So you're not suggesting anyone had been eating worms?

Wed. 1/7/09 12:18am From: Sybil

I may have been thinking of the cat who ate cheese and sat by the mousehole with... wait for it...

Wed. 1/7/09 12:18am From: Joe

heh... bated.

Wed. 1/7/09 12:20am From: efd

"bated" is indeed the correct spelling for that usage.

Wed. 1/7/09 12:22am From: efd

ohhhh, that reminds me of the horrible Dunkin' Donuts campaign.

I am just going to recycle all my Facebook and Twitter material. Apologies in advance to those of you who've seen it already.

Wed. 1/7/09 12:22am From: Amanda

Your breath is bated, because you are BEING baited.

Wed. 1/7/09 12:25am From: E.L.

That's okay, Sybil. I definitely wrote "Santa Clause" a few weeks back.

Wed. 1/7/09 12:26am From: Pete

EFD

Tings Tings? Hey Mr. Guilty Pleasure. It took you awhile to give in but give in you did!

Wed. 1/7/09 12:27am From: Joe

Hmm I thought the Ting Tings sucked but this song is good.

Wed. 1/7/09 12:27am From: efd

Hi Pete! That's because it never showed up in the new bin! I finally bought it when I went shopping last week,.

Wed. 1/7/09 12:28am From: efd

Joe, that is the power of the Evan "Funk" Davies show right there.

Wed. 1/7/09 1:00am From: Joe

Serious radio talk show host? Doesn't sound like much fun.

Wed. 1/7/09 1:03am From: efd

hardy har, Joe Vilanch.

Wed. 1/7/09 1:14am From: E.L.

I was just about to turn in when the Nightingales came on. DA-A-A-A-V-I-I-I-IES!!

Wed. 1/7/09 1:23am From: Joe

I might be outing myself as a rube, but that very much reminds me of the immortal Rob Schnieder/Adam Sandler line.

Wed. 1/7/09 1:24am From: Jessica

omg, it's Tuesday! I almost missed it!
This sounds like the Coachwhips, on a really really really sunshiney balmy afternoon. Tasty.

Wed. 1/7/09 1:27am From: C

I hope that Dunking Donuts thing doesn't start a trend (I'm spelling it with the "g" now out of spite). I'm already kind of disturbed by JetBlue's attempts to get me to replace the verb "fly" with "jet", but only when I refer to flying on JetBlue (or should I say Jet Blue...there).

Wed. 1/7/09 1:29am From: Jessica

[scanning the comments] OK, now I can only just barely wait to listen to this from the top.

Wed. 1/7/09 1:30am From: Jessica

That dogmatics song makes me really look forward to being single, again.

Wed. 1/7/09 1:31am From: Sybil

I am pleased to say that until I just consulted Google, I had no idea what you all were on about, talking about Dunkin Donuts.

I've finally succeeded in isolating myself completely from all advertisements!

Wed. 1/7/09 1:31am From: Joe

I use "jet" as a verb, but only as a synonym for "bounce"

Wed. 1/7/09 1:34am From: efd

Sybil, nice work!

Hi Jessica, hi C!

Joe, I may be outing myself as a non-rube, but... what's the line?

Wed. 1/7/09 1:34am From: Sybil

Joe, how?

Wed. 1/7/09 1:40am From: john

Darn it, i think I dozed off and missed the Nerves. Not like I don't have the CD or anything, but it's somehow different this way.

Wed. 1/7/09 1:41am From: efd

dozing off during my show? The nerve!

Wed. 1/7/09 1:42am From: Joe

I take that back, "jet" is "bounce" but with implied urgency. Though one can "bounce" urgently. Example: (Sybil has just left a party)

Partygoer to other partygoer:
"Oh, Sybil? I think she bounced."

Partygoer to other partygoer:
"Sybil? Her ex showed up and she -jetted-"

The line is from the Waterboy, when Rob Schnieder, dressed as a crazy cajun swampman, screaming "YOU CAN DO EET" at Adam Sandler, who plays a mildly retarded football player. It's like my generation's Caddyshack.

Just kidding. That would be terrible.

Terrible like a Nerve/Nerves pun.

Wed. 1/7/09 1:44am From: johnk77

Wed. 1/7/09 1:51am From: efd

hi John, thanks for the info. Bruce Vilanch co-wrote the Eartha Kitt song I played, he wasn't actually singing.

Wed. 1/7/09 1:58am From: Joe

this is a pretty good song, but i'm not sure its a pretty good Damned song.

great show tonite

Wed. 1/7/09 1:59am From: Sybil

It was a Damned good song, though.

Wed. 1/7/09 1:59am From: efd

thanks Joe! I was thinking the same thing.

(about the song, that is!)

Wed. 1/7/09 1:59am From: efd

ouch... Sybil with the winning entry.

Wed. 1/7/09 2:00am From: Joe

Sybil, I restrained myself, why couldn't you?

No puns next week, we went well over our quota.

Wed. 1/7/09 2:00am From: johnk77

bruce vilanch is cool
