Favoriting March 17, 2009: w/ live music from Arrington de Dionyso
Old Time Relijun's front-man will perform some of his true folk sounds live on the radio. Instruments may include bass clarinet, snare drum, shruti box, and multiphonic voice. Arrington de Dionyso's grand textural experiments are inspired by Indian classical music, Tuvan throat-singing, and free jazz. He's playing NYC at The Stone on March 11 (curated by Lucas Ligeti), March 19 at Zebulon in Brooklyn, and March 20 at Theater Lab in the West Village. Arrington's got a new album later this year on ESP-Disk, The Naked Future

  10:12am
dc pat:

  10:15am
Cecile:

hola.
The Bulldog in NE Minneapolis makes awesome fried mozzarella.
  10:15am
stingy d:

why singy? why always?

the quality just not that great. it's very much a chain from what i can tell. and the employees just work there, they don't know what they are selling.
  10:17am
dc pät:

oh, got it. I like "singy d"--it's like you got singed by something big and firey. or maybe you like to sing a lot.
  10:18am
postmarathonmanpaul:

stingy d, as our in-column eatery raconteur i think you're doing fine, honestly, no honestly.

  10:24am
Parq:

Pat, SD has nicely illustrated my point. Rule number one for a visitor picking a place to eat; not the chains. For the life of me, I can't figure out why people knock themselves out financially to come here, and then eat in the same damn Olive Garden as at home.
  10:25am
Bäd R☺nald:

Hey Stingy - you ever do S'Mac on 12th street?
  10:25am
Parq:

I sorry - "Pät".
  10:30am
Pearly Sweets:

You know what is funny, Parq, one of my coworkers went up there a few months ago and the first place she ate was at an Olive Garden. Her reason was "we were hungry and didn't want to walk any further." My response "you could have gone one block in either direction."
  10:30am
Cecile:

I don't know, either, Parq. Although Tim Horton's did save my butt a few times last time I was in Toronto...
  10:32am
Cecile:

You know, folks, it's weird, but some people are not all that into food. I remember looking at one acquaintance like an alien when he said he never noticed what kind of bread his sandwiches were on!
  10:36am
annie:

it's all about the flavour and taste.. the savory compared to the sweet. the toothsomeness of the bite. i love food.
  10:38am
Parq:

Jason, this Pinhas is gorgeous.
  10:38am
Oliver Twist:

Food, glorious food!
  10:38am
postmarathonmanpaul:

...and some folk don't know which side their bread is buttered on, idiomts!
  10:40am
annie:

BREAD!!! ....... butter... hhmmm..
  10:44am
Doug from DC:

I thought The Fly Girlz album was released on Sockets. I know the guy that runs the label, and just got an e-mail blast about his new releases today.
  10:44am
Cecile:

mmmmm, bread.

Fresh butter. Hope butter from Central MN, made from the milk of cows that have done nothing wrong, and salt - if you get the salted kind.

now I'm hongry.

Say, can you play the WFMU National Anthem aka "Cars that Go Boom?"
  10:45am
stingy d:

i have water now so fuck you
  10:46am
annie:

cecile just made some fresh butter last week,,, hhmmm had to quality control a couple times, veerry important!
  10:47am
Cecile:

Chill out, Testy D.

Oh, Annie, you are doing veerrrry important work.
  10:48am
annie:

and since i am alone 97 percent of the time, i get to eat it all by myself, mostly.
  10:49am
annie:

oh, cecile, the puppies are born! she had 4 and the female is tricoloured. not sure about the husky bit yet. will see her next week
  10:50am
Cecile:

How simulataneously luxurious and wistful.
  10:52am
Cecile:

pupppppppppppppiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeee!

they're not going to give her to you until 8 weeks, right? They shouldn't...
  10:53am
GP:

Morning all..I hear that SXSW is almost sold out already, and they expect a better turn out than last year.....what recession! It si getting to where you need an inside connection to get in.
  10:54am
annie:

i wouldn't have it any other way cece, want to do it right...going to bring something that smells like me so i can get her to know me that way..
  10:56am
Cecile:

Good job, annie!
Now to get the wheels turning on my dogdoption.
  10:57am
postmarathonmanpaul:

that would be fresh morning hay and violets annie! i hope she grows up to be a fine rabbit chaser.
  11:00am
annie:

that's a wonderful image of smells PMMP, not sure how i feel about chasing rabbits, though, they are everywhere around here. the owls have been feasting lately. makes me sad ... out there chewing on the apple bask, then BAM.. ...
  11:01am
annie:

that would be apple bark!
  11:01am
stingy d:

i like apple bask
  11:02am
Parq:

Okay, D's got bread and water. We've established that he and his laptop are in solitary.

Annie, three Ps - post puppy pics. We will not take no for an answer.
  11:03am
postmarathonmanpaul:

i like apple mast.
  11:03am
Cecile:

I want my puppala to be chasing all the bunnies and skwirels out of my yard. They seem to think it's a rodent superhighway.
  11:03am
annie:

parq, consider it done. if i get lucky perhaps as early as next week.. woohoo! stingy might have added something to that water like, whiskey?
  11:05am
annie:

i am now thinking about the ramifications of this decision.. wow.. haven't had to care for a youngun since my kid was at home.
  11:07am
stingy d:

i'm hanged over. somehow when you ride a bike for 9 hours a day... 4 beers feels like 10
  11:08am
stingy d:

furthermore all puppies should be allowed to break squirrel and rabbit necks
  11:10am
dc pät:

my cat breaks rat necks for breakfast..
  11:13am
GP:

Stingy, who is chasing you? Why are you riding so far?
  11:14am
postmarathonmanpaul:

stingy d, notwithstanding fear of plantnig subliminal references of former policeman, i have always pronounced your moniker as in the 'sting in ones tail,' and will continue to do so.
  11:17am
dc pät:

getting back to that Olive Garden discussion and being interested in the food you eat--I think it's the same thing as having some taste regarding music. If you are particular in one area, you probably are in others.
  11:17am
still b/p:

Scruffy carnivorous urban rabbits will chase bicyclers to terminal exhaustion. And they can smell cheese breath from six blocks away.

  11:20am
Tense E. Sea:

umlaut in love...
so don't forget it...
  11:21am
Parq:

The thing is, tourists who come to NYC not only eat in the Olive Garden, but get their dessert at one of the chain yogurt places, stay in chain hotels, shop in chain stores, party in chain theme bars, and see Broadway musical versions of movies they've watched on DVD 50 times. More power to them, I guess, and I love the tax money they're paying into my community (or at least the portion of it that Albany lets us keep), but if you're not traveling for new experiences, then what are you traveling for?
  11:23am
dc pat:

10-4, Parq.
  11:24am
annie:

i travel for museums, cafes, coffee shops, book stores and ethnic food! anything i can find..
  11:24am
dc pät:

and that's what I was saying, if you're going to choose Olive Garden, then you've probably bought the whole package and are listening to what ever comes out of American Idol too.
  11:25am
annie:

it's like travelling through that strange tunnel from one mall to the next!
  11:26am
Pearlÿ Sweets:

Being raised in Jackson Heights, but living in Jacksonville, Florida makes it really hard to listen to some of the stories from people I know down here who have visited NYC. I just want to say "Why!? WHY DID YOU DO THAT?!"
  11:26am
stingy d:

i hear you and agree completely parq, but you really need to factor in the sensation of seeing 10,000 people all at once, and the atmosphere here is truly something to behold. and like pat says, but didn't say, there is no accounting for taste.
  11:27am
Pearlÿ Sweets:

And these people are hip enough, I guess, but you drop them into some place they aren't familiar with and they clam right up.
  11:28am
annie:

i love the anonymity of NYC or any large city.
  11:28am
Parq:

Oh yeah, Pät, totally with you there. When the local smooth jazz station converted to easy-listening pop, the smooth jazz fans in my office were carrying on, and all I could think was, what, your lowest-common-denominator music got replaced by a different kind of lowest-common-denominator music, and I'm supposed to see that as an injustice?
  11:29am
stingy d:

by the way, i'm on the lam
  11:30am
annie:

be sure to remember your hip flask of whiskey for your water wink wink
  11:30am
Sexy Pervert Stu:

I'm also on a lamb. ;)
  11:31am
stingy d:

i keep my whiskey in my boot next to my knife
  11:32am
GP:

I have a weird thing where I like to know at least one person in the town that I am going to visit, that way it does not seem so overwhelming, but that has not stopped me from travelling to places where I don't know a soul. I meet people fairly quickly anyway.

mmmm...lamb!
  11:32am
Parq:

I like lamb, too, but mostly I'm on the chicken and vegetables. I hate to think what Stu's gonna do with that . . .
  11:33am
stingy d:

too many guns on my hip, get outta here pervert!
  11:34am
Sexy Pervert Stu:

Did I mention I am also a commie?
  11:35am

  11:36am
stingy d:

perverts really get my goat
  11:37am
annie:

as long as they leave the lamb, i'm ok with that
  11:38am
GP:

10-4 Annie, + you get the insider tour sometimes. I got a great tour of Chinatown last time in NYC because of a friend connection.
  11:38am
Sexy Pervert Stu:

OOooooeew! I'd love to GET your goat, Stingy! Meow!
  11:39am

  11:40am

  11:41am

Wow, all this and pervert stew!?!
  11:41am
still b/p:

We travel/eat/listen/shop for gratification. Ain't no accounting for different and ever-mystifying grading systems....for what feels like freedom, strokes and right buttons of usefulness for other-minded folks right next to us who can seem to operating in a decision galaxy far, far away. But hate to see their choices putting/ propagating more and more of what they choose in our faces/spaces...makes cities more pale, world more numb..as was pointed out regarding Union Square the other day. Boooo!
  11:41am
