Listener comments!

  11:05pm
john:

Hey Evan! And yeah, I wouldn't want to sit either if I were Dutronc.
  11:13pm
toni daytona:

hiya evan wuzzup?? i'm back while rachel's partying 2nite,,i hear you're on during the summer,,,great show as always!!!
  11:15pm
efd:

hi John, good to see you here again. and the same to you, Toni - what you heard is true.
  11:15pm
Peter Frampton:

Hey, you, I stole that first!!!
  11:19pm
Sybil:

Good evening all!

And I am so looking forward to having the opportunity to smuggle the word "nederglam" into a conversation.
  11:19pm
toni daytona:

just a reminder evan rachel's birtday is july 12th,,,i'm havin a surprise party for her & you're invited.
  11:20pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

did you know they played this song at John Belushi's funeral (by his request)
  11:22pm
john:

How'd he call in the request?
  11:23pm
Sybil:

Well, gee, I hope rachel's not reading.

John: long distance?
  11:23pm
efd:

MIchael, no, I didn't know that - but it makes sense!
Hi Sybil!
John --> har har
  11:25pm
dustin:

i love this song.. wish the fallen leaves would play the states again.
  11:26pm
dustin:

and RIP Bob Bogle
  11:27pm
Sean Daily:

Not even close to first comment! Woo hoo!
  11:27pm
toni daytona:

evan--can you come?? won't be any fun w/o you
  11:29pm
efd:

Dustin, I agree re Fallen Leaves! They're working on a new LP, at least - should be out soon.
Toni, if you have a live playlist for the party then I'll comment on it - how's that?
  11:30pm
dustin:

oh, that's great to hear, they were really good when they played Don Pedros.. can't wait to hear it
  11:31pm
Firm Grasp of the Obvious:

Toni, it's just not that difficult for us men to come.

Evan, sounds like poetic justice to me! Hint: Try poking the DJ repeatedly and demanding responses! O:-)
  11:33pm
Jessica:

YAAAAAAAY!!! Summer just wouldn't be summery w/o EFD.
  11:36pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

EFD--yes the name of the band was Stillwater in Almost Famous. And in fact, if I recall correctly in the middle of the movie Stillwater does a song with a talk box solo like Do You Feel Like We Do.
Also did you know that the songwriter and singer from the band Jigsaw died? I would swear you've played Jigsaw in the past
  11:41pm
Amanda:

I think Stillwater in Almost Famous were supposed to be Yes? I believe I remember hearing that once. Though Yes wish they had Jason Lee as their guitarist.

No way, sad! Will we hear "Sky High" tonight then? I live in hope. That song has definitely been played on this programme before.
  11:42pm
Sybil:

Amanda, I do seem to recall that event.
  11:43pm
dustin:

i thought they were supposed to be the Allman Brothers? I had it all wrong.
  11:45pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

I think the movie version of Stillwater has elements of a lot of bands from the 70's--the talk box, the acrylic drums, certain songs sounded like Led Zep and Bad Company, they're an amalgam or a pastiche, I'm not sure which is grammatically correct
  11:47pm
efd:

wow, I'm sad to hear about the Jigsaw guy. Yes, I've definitely played them before, plus I played on Dorian's version of "Sky High" at this year's marathon finale. Can anyone send me a link to a story?
  11:48pm
dave:

this set seems to have a "totally awesome lyrics" theme.
  11:48pm
Pastiche, Amalgam, Something Like That:

I bet you're right, Mike -- It's like asking which real life band is Spinal Tap. The idea was that it was supposed to have details from lots of bands.
  11:49pm
toni daytona:

evan,,,don't you worry i'll be playin great music ,,i got some motown,,rock,,pop,,,funk & i mite even play some disco,,evan hope you can make it,,,
  11:49pm
Sybil:

Dave, I was thinking along those lines!
  11:51pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

You asked for it EFD.
Written by my friend Pierre Perrone and it's the only place I have heard about this

  11:52pm
Amanda:

I thought there was one band that Cameron Crowe actually did write about when he was a kid, but probably they made the fictional band pretty far removed from it or, like, "amalgamized."

  11:55pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

This used to be on my Personics cassette if you remember them
  11:56pm
dave:

i'm not sure whether this supports or counters my claim about this set's emergent theme.
  11:57pm
Brian:

For a second with this Sly Fox song, thought I was hearing Roxette. A group that has gotten a surprising amount of WFMU airplay: http://bit.ly/x0zvB
  11:57pm
efd:

Dave, it's in the eye of the beholder, as it were.

Michael, thanks for the link - and yes, I do remember Personics!
  11:58pm
efd:

I'm actually proud of myself for resisting playing Roxette over the past five years - I *love* "The Look."
  11:58pm
efd:

(at least, I *think* I've resisted!)
  12:02am
Amanda:

tasted like a raindrop
  12:03am
FMU Site Search:

Diane has Roxette "The Look" on her playlists from 98 and 99. Yes, you seem to have resisted...
  12:03am
toni daytona:

evan--what do you think of those types of music??
  12:11am
toni daytona:

well i'm outta here thanks for keepin me company evan,,i mite be back next week,,,nite nite=)
  12:13am
Nite Toni:

Weren't you in "Scarface"? :-) ( <--- smiled when I said that)
  12:14am
efd:

goodnight Toni. I think you've been listening long enough that you can answer your own question about those musical genres.
  12:16am
?:

went to one of those backyard shows on broadway---very cool. Its like, a lot, on the street, and the jmz train actually runs right through it. Idk, very bladerunner, I thought.
  12:26am
toni d.:

efd i hope you feel the same way when i say love ya lots!!!!!!
  12:31am
Brian:

It's very mean of you to taunt us with talk of this Ronnie James Dio B & B with nothing to back it up...
  12:32am
jmd:

Oh, God. You've got to find that email. Please!
  12:37am
efd:

bingo!

http://web.archive.org/web/20021017051912/http://home.attbi.com/~burkeb/dio.html

there's also an unrelated story that i'll share in the next mic break
  12:42am
efd:

I know there's not much there, but at least now you know I wasn't making it up.
  12:43am
Laurie:

Just wanted to say hiiiiiiiii, Evan. I've been listening.
  12:44am
efd:

hi Laurie! good to hear from you. From what I partially heard of Tom's show in the background while I was listening to new releases I understand congratulations are in order!
  12:46am
toni.d:

evan you know i love ya lots,,,rite??
  12:48am
Laurie:

THanks! I haven't applied yet, but I'm getting my ducks in a row and will hopefully be enrolled in one of the schools of my choice by January 2010!
  12:49am
Brian:

I don't wanna be Last In Line on chicken wing night!
  12:51am
Danne D:

What's up Funksters?
I must be hallucinating cuz I could swear I saw some Yes commentary in the comments and that they came from...Amanda? A little harsh to dog Steve Howe like that, even if he does look like the cryptkeeper.

Oh and happy impending summer, EFD!
  12:52am
Danne D:

btw, I notice the EFD steady climb to the top of the league continues as it's now 2 down and 9 to go...
  12:55am
G:

You were mentioning translation help during the first mic break... Was away from keyboard for awhile --

images d'Epinal = a French saying, meaning pictures or prints that make the thing (landscape) look totally ideal. Epinal was a French town that sold cheesy prints like that. So that phrase means any kind of fake BS.

Band name is Butchers of Verdun (another French town)
  12:57am
G:

Danne -- On the South American Yes discussion list, they call Howe "Caveira" -- "The Skull". We Brits don't always age gracefully....
  12:57am
Danne D:

Frankly surprised at the volume of Yes that's been played on FMU
  12:57am
jmd:

Fantastic story. Thanks!
  12:59am
Sybil:

Pet Shop Boys!!!
  12:59am
Amanda:

Danne, I'm sorry if I ever misled you vis-a-vis my feelings about Steve Howe. Look out! (Though if you want the truth it was more a bump for Jason Scott Lee.)
  12:59am
efd:

you're welcome, glad you enjoyed it!

G - I think in the opening break I was wondering about hte title of the Davila 666 song. Thanks for the images d'Epinal info!
  1:00am
Amanda:

Sybil, I share your appreciation of the Pet Shop Boys all the way!
  1:02am
G:

Yeah, I didn't say anything about that at the time because it doesn't translate much. Pingarocha would be a proper name, not something you can translate --

pingorocha y la diva rockera

Pingorocha and the Diva Rocker
  1:02am
Danne D:

I know it was, Amanda :) Was just funnin' ya.

Here's a link to a Steve Howe pick - do not view immediately before going to sleep:
http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/sorry-i-have-get-my-chest#comment-69753
  1:02am
jmd:

maybe as a income generator they could add the 'Rainbow In the Dark-Side Of The Moon' Laser-quarium. The kid will love it!!!
  1:03am
efd:

ah, gotcha G - thanks!
  1:04am
jmd:

EFD, hate to live in the past, but any chance you got some Elf around?
  1:05am
G:

Yeah, it's supposed to be an over the top band name, like Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
  1:09am
Laurie:

HOAGIEFEST!!!!!!!!!!!!
  1:10am
Sybil:

Hoagiefest!

This song always does strangely remind me of Magical Trevor...
  1:11am
Danne D:

"Hoagie" is so South Jersey.

They're Subs :)
  1:11am
Neil N.:

I knew one millisecond into this song that it was a Hoagiefest number, and I've never even heard this one.
  1:11am
Sybil:

I thought "hoagyie" was, like, Philly?
  1:12am
Joe:

The highlight of my weekend, last weekend, was turning my friend's speakers around so they pointed out the window, opening the Wawa website, and playing the entire playlist at high volume.

It took 3 songs before anybody at the BBQ noticed that every song I played was about sandwiches.
  1:12am
efd:

they're known as grinders where I grew up!
  1:12am
Sybil:

OK, it's past my bedtime...
  1:12am
efd:

Joe, that would have been the highlight of my weekend too!
  1:13am
Joe:

Hoagie is Philly and areas of Philly influence. Wawa is based primarily in South Jersey. Past the Mason Dixon, as we say.
  1:15am
efd:

goodnight Sybil, thanks for staying up late!
  1:17am
Danne D:

Then there's the whole Taylor Ham/Pork Roll line. Taylor is all made in Trenton, yet if you ask for it there they'll look at you like you have 9 heads (gotta say pork roll). Conversely you'll get the same blank look up north if you ask for Pork Roll :) Anyhow, I'll now have dreams of food all night I guess :D

I'm gonna kick back and listen and sign out. Hope you guys have a good night and a happy kick off to the summer. Take care EFD! Farewell Amanda :)
  1:18am
Amanda:

Be nice if I could get a Tastykake up in my neighb once in a while.
  1:22am
Danne D:

you can order them online Amanda:

www.tastykake.com :)

Okay I'm really gone now.

Night all!
  1:23am
randy in NC:

Hey EFD. Kids are done w/ school and I can stay up late and listen live instead of on the archive. Yay!
  1:24am
The Interwebs:

Come to the Dark Side -- We Have Cookies!!
  1:25am
efd:

welcome Randy, and goodnight Danne!
  1:27am
randy in NC:

Did I see that you are going to be down my way later this summer???
  1:27am
check the clock:

speaking of randy...
  1:31am
Amanda:

Here I was thinking I had to go to the dentist because it was tooth-hurty.
  1:32am
efd:

Randy, that's correct - although I can't really go into detail here. Email me (evan at wfmu.org) and I'll give you the scoop.

Amanda, some jokes never get old, and that's one of them.
  1:38am
randy in NC:

Done
  1:50am
Joe:

*air guitar*
  1:57am
Joe:

*air synthesizer*
  1:57am
efd:

nice.
  1:58am
randy in NC:

Joe, a theremin?
  2:01am
Joe:

I can't top that. That's too damn witty.

Great show, Davies
