Listener comments!

  9:09am Paul Sherratt:

Lovely start. Early Compay Segundo !
  9:10am Drummer Some:

Hiya Paulino. Looking forward to hearing warbling Nia Morgan!
  9:11am texas scott:

morning,Doug.
It's good to have you back!

Your newsletter gets better and better!
  9:13am still b/p:

Good morning.

I'm doing a little step called "Just Make it Up and Don't Worry, Baby, Make it Up..."
  9:16am Parq:

What T-Scott said. Loved your description of your rural sojourn. Great to to have you back at the turntables (and their 21st C equivalents).
  9:21am Paul Sherratt:

Doug,
You have some Nia Morgan ? And a little Meic Stevens ... ?
  9:25am Drummer Some:

I got an email from Nia, who blamed you! Music is en route (thanks to your introduction). No Meic today (wah).
  9:29am annie:

morning doug, it's nice to hear that familiar opening set. i've been busy with some work, therefore the silence til now.. nice to have you back.
  9:38am Hugo:

Doug, did you get any chance to visit Carter Family territory during your sojourn in WV, such as Clinch Mountain?
  9:45am Drummer Some:

Hugo,
I was too far north. I did (as readers of the GTDS Newsletter already know) drive through Patsy Cline's hometown on the way there.

BTW: If any listener would like to get my weekly newsletter (with links to fantastic album downloads and more), just send me your email address. Click on my email link on this playlist page.
  10:10am Cecile:

I got that Gardens of Harlem FOR FREE from someone who was cleaning out their record collection in Marquette, MI
I love that too.
  10:14am Cecile:

wow, Brother JT can do any genre!

;D
  10:21am Cecile:

Okay.
Gardening.
Discuss.
  10:23am Carmichael:

Good morning, Doug and friends.
  10:26am annie:

cecile, i was just handed four huge garbage bags of potting supplies and cell packs, trays etc.. clay pots.. woohoo!! and i put new plastic on the green house. happy to say that the carrots are just fine.. and the weeds are very happy..
  10:27am still b/p:

Something blooming locally right now jus' stanks! Don't know what it is, but I keep riding into strong distinct pockets of the smell this week while biking. Don't remember hitting it or it hitting me so hard before.
  10:29am Cecile:

annie - awesome!

sbp, is it skunk cabbage, or just some rotting vegetation?
  10:31am annie:

bp, where are you again?
  10:32am Carmichael:

We have milkweed out here. It smells awful when it blooms, and worse by a factor of 10 when you cut or pull it.
  10:33am dc pat:

that's funny, I smelled rotting corpse on the ride in this morning..bad badness somewheres on the trail..
  10:35am dc pat:

by the way, somebody out there drives a big blue SUV of some sort with a WFMU sticker on the bumper and parks it across the street from my building on Fairfax Dr. Who is it? C'mon....
  10:41am Cecile:

leave a note, dcp. :)
  10:42am still b/p:

I'm in southern Maine.
It puts me in mind of a thick flower/blossom aroma, but don't know if it's in the trees or among shrubs or ground flowers -- kinda musky/pissy. So strong I keep expecting to see a very visible culprit in view.
  10:43am jk:

got any katarzyna sobczyk?
  10:44am north guinea hills:

Does anyone know where I can just pick up one or two ladybugs in Brooklyn short of tripping over one by happenstance? My jalapeno plants are infested w/ aphids.
  10:44am Carmichael:

Interesting set, Doug. I found the book about Dean Reed called Comrade Rockstar, and the author spends a great deal of time talking about the Prague music scene of the 60s and what it's like now. Perfect timing.
  10:45am Drummer Some:

@b/p Don't go talking about Maine or I'm gonna go back there straightaway. I even miss the earwigs.

@jk I don't know Katarzyna Sobczyk. Please tell us about her (him?)
  10:46am annie:

bp... hmm.. i wonder.. like portland region or closer to bar harbor?
  10:48am Parq:

Gardening -- I'll give ya what I got. We had a large art installation in our neighborhood park this summer, and one of its components was a garden. When the installation got taken down, the garden went with it. This morning, a work crew was restoring grass to the area. Kinda nice to see.
  10:52am still b/p:

Portland.
Doug -- September 'round this region is always sharply glorious. If I don't get out in the woods and mountains 2 or 3 days next week before things get too busy, I'm gonna pitch a pitiful tantrum.
  10:55am jk:

hey Doug,
Katarzyna (her) was a singer in Poland in the 60s. the only album I have is "Lovers Are Lonely" or something like that on Pronit. here's a nice ballady clip on youtube of a different version of this cover: http://tinyurl.com/kopvnx
  11:04am monica:

mornin' doug! today's show is a solid gold launch into the weekend. keep on keepin' on!
  11:09am Drummer Some:

@ jk Thanks a ton for the info and the link re: Katarzyna!

@Monica Caint wait to hear the other end of the weekend sandwich
  11:11am Parq:

What a great song that Hankshaw was! I gotta find a copy of that for my own sweetie.
  11:15am seang:

monica, you rule and doug too-thanks for the tunes
  11:15am north guinea hills:

Being born WV, and spending holidays there w/ my grandparents, i never was exposed to hillbilly music until college, since my family thought of hillbilly music as a WV stereotype they were trying to avoid.

My parents were redfaced, yet intrigued, when they heard me playing Carter Family et al in my car years ago.
  11:18am north guinea hills:

(albeit the Carter Family were from Virginy near the Tennessee border)
  11:21am rich m:

great tune. origin?
  11:22am Hugo:

Loved that transition from Western Swing to ... er ... Eastern Swing ...
  11:28am Drummer Some:

@rich m Which tune were you asking about? (Refer to the playlist for info on the recording source.)
  11:33am russell:

loving this!
  11:35am jk:

kinda sounds like rd burman yelling in the background, doesn't it?
  11:36am gumby:

I concur with that statement
"Yaaa-Hoo!"
  11:37am Jed:

I like me some Indian tunes
  11:43am rich m:

Amar Singh Chamkila & Amarjot

which region of i'm assuming india? i could be wrong..
  11:43am chris:

Naja is the latin word for Cobra. Was she calling that guy a snake perhaps?
  11:50am Daniel:

Naga is the Sanskrit word for snake. It also means elephant. Go figure.
  11:53am Hugo:

I brought back a set of tablas from my last trip to the region. It's a nice thing to have even though I can't play them properly. Always loved the sound of tablas.
  11:53am chris:

Interesting on the Naga. I suppose Elephants do have snake-like appendages...
  11:54am Drummer Some:

  11:54am Daniel:

  11:56am jk:
