  9:16am Drummer Some:

GM to you Double A and VK and all other initialized souls.
  9:24am seang:

  9:35am Cecile:

hola!
  9:39am annie:

cecile!!!!!!!!what an adventure we had yesterday, huh??
  9:40am Cecile:

Ye Gods.
That was some kind of ridiculous.
  9:41am annie:

sad, in some ways, though..
  9:42am Cecile:

that's one Whale I want to send a Japanese trawler after, if you get what I mean?
  9:45am Hugo:

For more saxophone quartets, look here:

http://inconstantsol.blogspot.com/2009/10/rova-saxophone-quartet-live-in-moers-79.html

This has been (yet another) public service announcement ...
  9:45am Cecile:

anyhoo, Doug, do you have some Sam Rivers Winds of Manhattan you could play in upcoming weeks? And I am totally digging this whole horns-only combo set.
  9:45am Drummer Some:

I'm gonna play something from the Turtle's old label White Whale later. You mustn't miss it.
  9:46am Cecile:

LOLOLOLOLOLOL! "great", doug.
  9:46am texas scott:

what happened on 25th street?
  9:46am Drummer Some:

@Cecile
Not sure if I have that Sam Rivers. Just down loaded a rare tube trio disc of his. Suh-Weet!
  9:47am Cecile:

Oh, Hugo!
Rova are longtime loves of mine.
I finally saw them in Minneapolis at the end of a music festival. Me and the SEVEN OTHER PEOPLE THERE loved them.
  9:47am Cecile:

Nice, doug!
  9:49am PMD:

Mornin' - listening in. Cecile/annie, what kind of adventure?
  9:50am Drummer Some:

Sweet little coda coming after this 18-minute mind-melter.
  9:51am Cecile:

basically we got sick of GWW because he was completely out of control and I emailed Ken to block his IP address.
  9:51am Hugo:

And if that was not enough:

http://inconstantsol.blogspot.com/2008/06/rova-live-unreleased-works-from-live.html

This has been ... you get the idea ...
  9:52am Cecile:

Hugo, you are the font from which all rare Rova knowledge springs.
  9:53am Bad Ronald:

@Cecile - Was he being abusive?
  9:55am Cecile:

he was harassing Betsy, posts compulsively trying to get trouble to repsond, and has been bugging annie for months. Trouble was trying to do this Syl Johnson interview and it's all "more music! who de man?" garbage. Sorry, it has to be said.
  9:57am Bad Ronald:

Ah yes, a cry for attention...
  9:58am Cecile:

yep. Which is sad on some level.
But if he just acted llike a normal poster, he would have gotten good attention soon enough.
  9:59am still b/p:

'At's what ya get when you pours the Red Bull on yer Cocoa Puffs for breakfast.
  10:04am Cecile:

true that.

But how cool was that Syl Johnson interview? He was hilarious. He needs his own talk show.
  10:07am texas scott:

yep,Cecile.Syl Johnson was terrif!
  10:07am BG:

took a minute but just realized how great that sax quartet was
  10:07am Sonar in DC:

Loving Rova...oops, it's over Just getting into work. Sigh.
  10:08am annie:

he was a dj at a radio station where he went to school. i knew the station, too, and i think that's how the madness began. he obsessed over that and it got out of hand. then he came in each week to the comments and started to harass trouble with very annoying comments.. so that was the beginning of the visits from george eliot. i used that name to continue to comment, yet avoid more GWW.; hoping to curb his enthusiasm... poor guy..
  10:08am Hugo:

Cecile, for your info, the Lateef from last year in Minneapolis has also been posted on the blog I'm running:

http://inconstantsol.blogspot.com/2009/10/yusef-lateef-with-roscoe-mitchell.html

Two hours of goodness for your listening pleasure (as they say) ...

I'm preparing Burnin Red Ivanhoe w/John Tchicai - from Berlin 1969 - that's truly something!
  10:09am Sonar in DC:

I must be moving slow today, My math question was 831+5 and I wrote 838.
  10:10am Bad Ronald:

Wow, I did not realize it was THAT involved!!!
  10:10am Cecile:

excellent, Hugo. I have to get my little hard drive cleaned off so I can start filling it up again with more music again.
  10:12am ari delon:

tjing it would be really funny if they started making the maths question really hard so only maths freaks could post to the playlist.
  10:12am annie:

yeah, BR... he has that kind of personaltiy, unfortunately..
  10:13am Cecile:

ari, that would mean that only you would be listening.
  10:15am ari delon:

cecile how did u know im a polymath?
  10:15am El Thatchmo:

I always thought it was 8:20 cause that's when President Lincoln was shot.
  10:15am trs:

'do nothing'
or 'do your thing'
  10:17am Bob:

On this page of 23 clocks for sale, 5 are set to 10:10, but that includes the Dali Melting Clock, which is nice: http://bit.ly/1Jqw62
  10:18am Cecile:

math people try to hide it, but it always slips out.
I dated a math(s) genius for a short time.
  10:19am texas scott:

must have the bacon watch and toast clock,LOL
thanks,Bob.
  10:20am Hugo:

Cecile, the solution is to get an external hard drive which you can attach to your computer and transfer as much stuff as you can from the internal to the external hard drive - I'm now on to my fifth.
  10:21am annie:

scott.... you rascal!!
  10:22am Cecile:

Hugo: I'm asking one for Christmas, or getting one with Christmas money. Yes. I'm almost 50 and get Christmas money...
  10:24am Parq:

'Cile, external hard drives are ridiculously cheap. My daughter recently bought a 500 gig one that is no bigger than a calcluator ca. 1979. And I don't think the price cleared $200.
  10:28am texas scott:

the album is "country hix"...really?
LOL!
  10:29am Cecile:

I know. I can get a great one for about $130.
But I'm a little bit ahead, and trying to blow my surplus before Christmas...

Oh, lord, those old calculators!
  10:29am Tom:

I bought a 500 about 2 years ago for $120. I think you can even get them for $100 now.
  10:35am Cecile:

I saw one on sale for $105. That's good to know that they are regularly that price.
  10:38am Drummer Some:

Here's my Veteran's Day post in tribute to my pops:
http://tinyurl.com/yzfyy97
  10:38am Sonar in DC:

Since we're on back-up, does anyone know about Mozy? Or is better to buy an external one? I need sumpthin. I've lost too much stuff over the years.
  10:39am Hugo:

You can save a little cash by buying one with a separate power source; those that are to be plugged directly into the computer and run on computer power tend to be more expensive. Generally, the smaller the drives, the more expensive they are. My latest is a 1 TB drive which was close to $200 at the current exchange rate. But I suspect you can get them cheaper in the US.
  10:42am Bad Ronald:

"Let it Roll"!!!
  10:44am Cecile:

Doug, that's a wonderful story.
My husband's dad doesn't talk much about his service, either. He was at the Battle of Coral Sea, a pretty terrifiying event. My brother-in-law found out he had earned a medal for valor as did the whole crew of his ship, not a Silver Star or anything, but he had it sent, and it sits proudly in the foyer of his dad's house.
  10:45am texas scott:

Wonderful tribute to your pops,Doug.
  10:46am Sonar in DC:

Thanks, Hugo.
  10:46am Cecile:

very true - and 90 and getting a new hip? Wow!
  10:47am Drummer Some:

Crazy thing is, he was never even gonna mention it.
  10:48am Cecile:

the medal?
I know - it's just now my father in law talks about some of his experiences.
  10:50am Filip:

Hi from Warsaw!!! :-)
  10:50am Carmichael:

Good morning everyone. Doug, I hope you're serious about the White Whale comp. That's the best CD I've bought in ten years (except for maybe Odessa).

My Dad is 85 and served in the 101st Airborne. He never said a word about it until I found his uniform. He still doesn't mention it, except for how much fun parachute school was.
  10:52am Carmichael:

Annie, that was you talking through your George Eliot nom de cyber? Had me fooled completely ...
  10:53am meredith Heuer:

tigre
  10:53am Hugo:

This is the one I'm using now:

$140 online - and you can put it in your bookshelf.

They also make these for portable use:

  10:53am BZ:

Tigre!
  10:54am trs:

tee'-gruhs -- very little 'uh'
  10:54am Sonar in DC:

My Dad was a Second Lieut. on a naval Destroyer in the Pacific and he never talked much about the war either except to say it wasn't an experience he'd like to repeat. But, he had enlisted. If he were alive he'd be 92. I do have his uniform though and some memorabilia. Enjoyed reading about your Dad, Doug.
  10:57am LizGig:

Doug, I will share with you a snippet of information my music-fanatic anthropologist friend shared with me: the correct adjective for describing something of/from/to do with Madagascar is malagasy. It's also the name of the language. Useful knowledge in a pub quiz! Or not.
  11:01am Drummer Some:

@LizGix
You are SO right. Of course I never remember that stuff when it counts. I have so many albums with liner notes about Malagasy this and Malagasy that. Thanks to you, I may never forget. (Tell next time.)
  11:01am stingy d:

odb rip! hey eveyrbody! hope all is well. miss you guys! so busy, so tired.
  11:02am annie:

yeah carm G.E.=a :)
  11:03am Hugo:

There seems to be a commonality - those who took part in the war are very reluctant to talk about it afterwards - those on the winning side and certainly those on the losing side. It can take decades - if ever ...
  11:03am LizGig:

LOL Doug! And you are so prepared for visiting English-speaking Europe to attend a pub quiz with a round on African languages! A critical life skill, that.
  11:03am annie:

i do it to minimize GWW's noise levels.
  11:04am Carmichael:

I was scratching my head wondering what the &$#% those intials meant ..... D'oh!

Thanks for the insight.
  11:06am annie:

when i was a deejay at the college station, that was my show.. the george eliot show.. sundays 8-noon
  11:06am annie:

i used the name first of all to see if he caught on.. right over his head, so i kept using it.
  11:08am texas scott:

and dj skillz,too?
annie, you are a true renaissance woman!
  11:09am Drummer Some:

The men (and women) who served in WWII had something to show for their efforts: defeating fascism, which has to, somewhere in the deep recesses register as it having been "worth it." But what about the poor souls who saw the horrors in Laos or Basra or Kabul. What the hell can they rationalize their suffering with? (Sorry to get so serious here. These thoughts have been percolating in my head this week.)
  11:11am Cecile:

stingy, good to see you!
  11:11am annie:

actually, i have discovered a way to have a show again,, kind-of music call-in info chat shit......... it's fine doug, ...immediately brings us down to reality, which is good from time to time.
  11:12am Sonar in DC:

I just re-read Slaughterhouse Five last week. It hits home on a lot of points. A good anti-war book, and Apocolypse Now is a good anti-war movie.
  11:13am Cecile:

the hurt locker is told from a neutral point of view, but that's also a great anti-war movie.
  11:14am annie:

cecile, i still haven't gone back to that
  11:15am Billy Pilgrim:

I'm unstuck in time!
  11:16am Sona:

Me too!!
  11:16am Sonar in DC:

So it goes...
  11:16am ?:

Gallipoli is my favorite war / anti-war movie
  11:17am Cecile:

I'm told the second time watching it is no less engaging, but a lot less nerve-wracking

Gallipoli is also a great movie.
  11:18am stingy d:

over the last three days i have averaged 100 mles a day on my bicycle. shit is intense man. gotta do it today in the rain. but yesterday i saw andrew wk and he made my day. nicest guy ever. made me feel much less tired of being tired.

it's always nice to feel cozy here on the wfmu chat board. just wish i didn't have to eventually leave.
  11:18am Cecile:

I like the Midnight Express synth bubbling out of this piece.
  11:19am Cecile:

We'll keep a spot by the fire open for you, stinge.

Andrew WK does seem like a real sweetheart. And Ann Arbor in the house! I probably sold him records when he was a tadpole
  11:20am Carmichael:

Way to go Stingy. Exercise is always good. I've just re-dedicated myself to running again, after a 9 month lapse in judgement. I'm always tired, too ...
  11:22am Drummer Some:

Just warning y'all: I'm playing this África Negra & João Seria TWICE because I thinks the greatest thing I ever heard. (And because I can.)
  11:23am Hugo:

Well, in WW2, we knew at least in retrospect what happened so it's possible to make an assessment of "worth". In current war theatres, too much is shrouded in security and secrecy to get an idea about what's actually happening and hence next to impossible to make a judgement of worth. But the words "unwinnable" and "quagmire" come to mind and no exit strategy is in sight ... so ? Recall that the Afgan war has lasted almost as long as WW1 and WW2 put together!
  11:25am stingy d:

hey guys.... i mean... not trying to be a self-promotion ho-bag but if i don't tell people, people won't know... here is more exercise i been doin... safe enough for work: howmuchyouthink.tumblr.com

it's also an especially special day because it's ol dirty day.
  11:25am still b/p:

Two-fers tackle triskaidekaphobia.
  11:26am stingy d:

oh and i saw polydacytly of the foot yesterday!!!!
  11:26am trs:

fearing triskaidekaphobics-- what's that called?
  11:27am LizGig:

It's the beat, that dancing-around-heartbeat beat.Makes you feel good! Makes it worth playing more than twice.
  11:28am Listener Dave from NH:

Averaging a century a day on your bike? That's just silly. My hat's off to you though - after doing a century this summer I didn't want to do much the next day but lounge out and read a book.
  11:28am Sonar in DC:

I'm dancing in my chair
  11:29am Ike:

Yeah I love this África Negra too.
  11:30am Carmichael:

What style is this called? Soca? Juju?
  11:31am stingy d:

yea it's not easy. tuesday i was a beast and did it fast. wednesday was the toughest. well over 100 and i got slow toward the end. yesterday i was a di-plodding-cus. and today i'll grind it one more time before i rest up until tuesday.
  11:32am Ted from Baltimore:

I can't get enough of this África Negra & João Seria either. Sound d'Afrique, a compilation from early '80s, is out there available for download, I think it has one or 2 tracks as lovely as this.
  11:36am Hugo:

Yep, there were two Sound d'Afriques. Got both of them. Some exquisite specimens of Congolese on 'em.
  11:37am Cecile:

I have #2, I haven't seen #1 in years.

Doug and Maria? Radio Heaven!
  11:43am Carmichael:

Here's the White Whale song! I love this tune.
  11:43am Drummer Some:

As Promised: This Malibu's (yes, the misuse of the apostrophe is atrocious) is the track on White Whale records!
  11:46am Ike:

Ugh. Thanks for explaining that the apostrophe misuse is a "sic." The inside of my brain cauldron was just getting into a bubbling lather about that.
  11:47am Hugo:

They were a couple of East African bands doing congolese-inspired stuff round about the early 80s. One was Orchestra Super Mazembe from Kenya and the other Orchestra Makassy from Tanzania. Seek 'em out if you can.
  11:48am Drummer Some:

I thought about adding a "sic," but then decided anybody spying this playlist in the future who besmirches ME for making the mistake is the bigger arsehole! It's like a trap!
  11:51am stingy d:

i fuckin'g hate apos trophies. i do what i got dam please.

EURO LANGUAGE ABUSIVE!!!!
  11:52am annie:

doug, as usual, it's been a wonderful show!
  11:53am Carmichael:

I'm doing the Mashed Potato.
  11:54am ?:

Both have been blogged, of course. Just saving Doug the trouble of finding them (if he hasn't already).

http://permanentcondition.blogspot.com/2005/12/orchestra-super-mazembe-kaivaska_12.html

http://babeblogue.blogspot.com/2008/01/orchestra-makassy-agwaya-1982.html
  11:56am Carmichael:

Thanks for the tuneage Doug, as well as the memories of WWII. I'm gonna go salute something.
  11:58am Drummer Some:

@?
Thanks for the links. Fantastic!

Hey everybody: GREAT FUCKING comments universe today. Really enjoyed it. Please tune during the mini-marathon starting Tuesday. I can't wait to ride shotgun with Maria on Wednesday (12-3).

Cheers,
Doug
  11:59am Duke:

I'm off to put on my dancin' pants.
  11:59am Hugo aka ?:

A pleasure, Doug.
