Favoriting January 1, 2010: Afrobeat for the New Year
On Wednesday, we saw "Fela” on Broadway. A classy tribute to the great Nigerian afrobeat master and political activist. Antibalas did the music and it was hot; Batia (my 13 year old daughter) was embarrassed when I whooped during a killer sax solo. As well-known as Fela is, Mulatu Astatke is not. According to liner notes on Ethiopiques #24, his tracks "foreshadow his 1966 New York recordings...decidedly Latin and hardly a monument to Abyssian groove-- although a few tracks do sound vaguely Ethiopian and the group was named the Ethiopian Quartet. They none the less constitute the very first pages in the annals of afrobeat-- a full six years befroe the Cameroonian Manu Dibango's 'Soul Makossa' and long still before the flamboyant entrance of the Nigerian Fela Anikulapo Kuti."

Mulatu Astatke & The Heliocentrics  Cha Cha   Favoriting Also on Strut, this one was recorded 30 or more years later. 
Menelik Wesnatchew  Tchereqa   Favoriting First heard of Mulatu from the incredible "Ethiopiques" series on Buda Musique. This is from Volume 24! 
Silk Road Ensemble  Letter to Pythagoras   Favoriting Heading east, these folks (without Yo Yo Ma) have another CD: "Off the Map" (World Village, 2009). If we keep going, we get to China some day. 
Vijay Iyer Trio  Mystic Brew   Favoriting I've been hearing a lot about this guy; finally get to check him out. "Trixation Version" is from "Historicity" (The Act Company, 2009) 
King Chango  African Fever   Favoriting I like this short number a lot; good way to wrap up the set. 
Vijay Iyer Trio  Historicity   Favoriting First as bed music, now let's listen to it straight 
Angelique Kidjo  Tumba   Favoriting Her 2002 CD, with Bill Lasswell helping with the mix, is smooth and classy but this is the best song. Brazil, with help from C. Brown-- Is that Carllinhos Brown? 
Mahlathini & Mahotella Queens  Yebo! (Mbaqanga Mix)   Favoriting They took this tune and messed around; nice. From "Paris-Soweto" (Polydor, 1989) 
Roy Ayers  Coffey is The Color   Favoriting Movie music from "Can You Dig It? The Music and Politics of Black Action Films 1968-75" (Soul Jazz, 2009). Some of the best music of the time, with tunes by Marvin Gaye, Bobby Womack, JB, Grant Green-- and, of course, Curits Mayfield and Isaac Hayes 
Nat Dove and the Devils  Zombie March   Favoriting More movie music. Dig it. Was there really a movie about bluesman Petey Wheatstraw? 
Solomon Burke and Gene Page  The Bus   Favoriting Movie was "Cool Breeze" (1972) but I guess I missed it. 
Jesse Stone  Crawfish   Favoriting I was on the air last week-- xmas day-- and played a bunch of this CD ("Roll Your Moneymaker")on black rock & roll from the 50s. But I had to add this one today. 
Bettye LaVette  Loves Made a Fool of Me   Favoriting Recorded 1969-70 and recently reissued on Sundazed, thanks to the resurgence of Bettye LaVette, who keeps on belting out those hot R&B numbers 
Duke Robillaird  Use What You Got   Favoriting Duke & band playing the Loew's theater-- an amazing place-- along with John Hammond on January 15 
John Hammond  Down in the Bottom   Favoriting Check out this band, from his "So Many Roads" album: Charlie Musselwhite, Robbie Robertson, Leven Helm, Mike Bloomfield, Garth Hudson, Jimmy Lewis, on Vangaurd from 1965 
The Kropotkins  If I Had My Way   Favoriting New CD is "Paradise Square" on Mulatta (2009)
