  10:02am
Cecile:

It was something from Faust 4 - I think they were talking about it during the fundraiser.
  10:02am
jason:

  10:03am

  10:45am
Carmichael:

Good morning Jason and every other body. Cecile, this is the Great Depression. I'm surprised FMU got that close under the circumstances.
  10:46am
dc pat:

I DEMAND TO HAVE SOME BOOZE!!
  10:47am
dc pat:

  10:49am
Cecile:

  10:54am
Carmichael:

Mild hallucinogenics are my forte, but I defintely feel your pain, Cecile and Pat.
  10:56am
matheus:

  10:59am
Cecile:

scroll up, mathus.

Jason, I need some crazy rockin. I am half-asleep - not because of your show - but because of sick.
  11:07am
Mark:

Where can I find that awesome track by Emergency Broadcast Systems? Whoa!
  11:10am
Beth:

Mark, I was totally gonna make that joke, but I couldn't get it snappy enough! My congrats.
  11:14am
maria t:

Jason, this should make your day: I am requiring my students this semester to use music from the FMA (and other CC-licensed works) to score their video assignments.

I figured it would be fun to have them browse through the archive (and get turned onto something new in the process), but one of my students said yesterday, "Isn't there anyone we know on here?" Sigh, youth.
  11:16am
Mark:

My pleasure Beth. I'm all about getting a cheap laugh.
  11:17am
Emily:

This song is turning my page!
  11:19am
jason:

maria, i hope they find something they like! we get a lo emails from people looking for very specific things...t if anybody knows of free, quality polka music please let me know
  11:20am
north guinea hills:

@ Cecile

I'm just exhausted after my Sergio Leone marathon last night. rockin' or ambient will do my purty hangover well....
  11:21am
maria t:

I love Eddy Current Suppression Ring so much. Kinda jealous they're playing with Pissed Jeans in NYC. May have to come up for it.

Jason, I am helping them locate things that may be similar to their musical tastes, so I've been spending a lot of time just browsing through the FMA and becoming familiar with what's on there. I tried explaining to them it's not all things that weirdos like.
  11:24am
north guinea hills:

hell jah! I-Roy!
  11:25am
Beth:

Mark, Alfred Hitchcock said that puns are the highest form of literature. I tend to agree.
  11:28am
holland oats:

awes show jason
  11:28am
minnesota jeff:

Is this remixed with that "Psotchsiasaup" song or whatever?
  11:29am
north guinea hills:

I oddly dig this cappoano bros.
  11:29am
joe mulligan:

this sounds like the song that Maria L did at Maxwells!
  11:30am
minnesota jeff:

Ken sang the song I am talking about, the Italian Jibberish song.
  11:30am
jason:

well maria, whether your students become Vosotros fans or not, id love to see/hear what they come up with!
  11:30am
Emily:

Minnesota Jeff, do you mean the Italian song about what English sounds like to non-english speakers?
  11:32am
minnesota jeff:

Yep.
  11:32am
maria t:

Jason, have you heard the whole Adriano Celentano track that's sampled at the end of the Cappoano Bros. song?
  11:32am
jason:

yes Jeff, it definitely had a little bit of Prisencolinen Sinainciusol in there...
  11:32am
Cecile:

You know, maria t., I keep reading this on Spinner in the comments section, too. "Write about someone we know!" I thought the purpose of reading websites and visiting the FMA was to discover new things and to apply your own curatorial filter?
  11:38am
north guinea hills:

the last time i talked to jason 2 years ago, he said he was shelfing the donna summer tag. i suppose the litigal heat as gotten a bit more chill.
  11:42am
Carmichael:

Maria & Cecile, I compare it to watching the news. I used to watch the news to see what happened in the world. Now, people want to see/hear THEIR news, not yours. "Nothing new or strange, please. I want my opinions spoken back to me."
  11:42am
minnesota jeff:

TODD!! YES!!!
  11:44am
Cecile:

And yet, I run across some kids who are just thirsty for new perspectives. I had twentysomethings on another board chasing down Sylvester and Edith Piaf recordings after I'd posted YouTube clips of them.
  11:46am
north guinea hillsn:

whoops, i meant jason forrest. i am loving this ogene.....
  11:46am
Carmichael:

That's good to hear. My nephew is just getting into The Sweet and the Ramones. So there's still hope.
  11:47am
north guinea hills:

(will download at home). thanks jason!
  11:50am
maria t:

@Cecile: I have a lot of Deep Thoughts about discovery, so I'll be brief. There is a lot of research, especially from the Pew Foundation's Internet Life Project, that seems to support the notion that younger folks today prefer to reinforce what they know instead of venturing beyond. (This helps explain why technologies like Twitter aren't popular with teenagers and young adults.)

So I'm not entirely taken aback by the remarks. But I've taught this class for three years, and have grown tired of watching student work get yanked from Youtube et al. because of copyright violations. My goal is to make students aware and respectful of the terms an artist has set on their intellectual property -- even if the copyright isn't something one necessarily agrees with.

Also, I think WFMU and the FMA are cool, and I want to be the cool professor. But now maybe they think I'm weird.
  11:55am
north guinea hills:

From my life experience, most people seek the familiar over the unfamiliar/exotic. That said, it is those that seek the unknown/new that seem to prove new knowledge. Sorry if I'm being redundant/obvious (slashies too).
  11:58am
Mark:

Beth (if you're still out there) - loved the reference to Hitchcock. I just happen to be a big admirer of his work. Along with Bunuel, my two favorite filmmakers.
  11:58am
minnesota jeff:

All sorts of 'weird' bands have had hits suddenly if they get exposed to the masses via a 'safe' and common exposure. Most people can probably whistle along with the 5,6,7,8's song that was in Kill Bill and then became the theme to Vonage or whatever for like 2 years. They being an onscure japanese all female 60's styled rock group.
  12:00pm
fishmonkeystew:

Speaking of FMA, have any of you checked out Jon Rose (per recommendation via the FMA facebook)? The guy plays a mean barbed wire fence. Thanks for the heads-up, Jason.
  8:56pm
adamp:

jason, I enjoyed your sultans of swing, saw you do a nice knopfler impression too.
