minnesota jeff:

EFD, you nailed it. Man you NAILED it! That was such a great Alex Chilton tribute, covered his whole ranged. Fantastic. R.I.P ALEX CHILTON
  11:36pm

Was gonna say -- amazing that he already sounded like that as a teenager. I agree with Jeff as well. Well done, efd!

(Hi, Danne)
  11:40pm
Danne D:

:)
And now Minnesota Jeff's here. It's an all-star cast of posters.
  11:40pm
Bryce:

Apparently, Chilton sang deeper in the Box Tops because the producer told him to sing that way. (That's what he said on Fresh Air, anyway.)
  11:43pm
Kat:

My favorite on High Priest is "Nobody's Fool". Nice set EFD!
  11:46pm
minnesota jeff:

howdy danne d!
  11:48pm

  11:48pm
efd:

thanks for the comments, everyone! Glad you enjoyed that, I was on the fence about doing an all-AC opening set but I'm glad I did.
  11:48pm
Joe B:

On some of the tracks on the 1970 CD, Chilton sorta has the gruff voice.
  11:50pm
DJ Terre T:

Thanx for the props EfD on my Alex Chilton trib this Sat.
Ur so right---he had SO MUCH material, i'm glad u played some of the great covers he did! You prolly cudda done 3hours of JUST songs he covered!   11:57pm
Danne D:

Your gut instincts as usual were correct Evan - definitely will check out Terre's archive as I missed it during my trip. (Though Terre was with me in spirit as I did rock her T-shirt at the track)

Bryce! Aharon! Terre! The hits keep coming.
Props to all I didn't shout out as well.

Exiting starbucks now, will catch up in a little bit :)
  11:58pm
Pete:

EFD

Heads up, we're both fans of the Cute Lepers and they have had a new CD out on 1-2-3-4 Go! records called "Smart Accesorices" over the past month. If you have it in the new bin, please play a song. If not, be on the lookout . . . .

Thanks!

Pete

  12:06am

Kendall!:

Oh come on man it says it right there on the wall!
  12:13am
efd:

Kendall, I can assure you that if the number were on the whiteboard where it usually is that I wouldn't have been stammering for two minutes trying to remember it.

Thanks, Aharon and TT for the assist.
  12:13am
DJ Terre T:

To Kendall, in Evan's defense--its NOT written on the wall anymore. It as erased for the Marathon. I noticed now its sez (more or less) "THANX FOR A GREAT MARATHON" And all the info tht DJs need that used 2b on the dry erase board isnt there anymore!
  12:16am
DJ Terre T:

And Listener Kendall, why not cut yr main man Evan some slack? He's doin a FREE tix give-away with no help and yr callin him out on the comments! Sheeeeesh brosef!
:)
  12:20am
efd:

also, not for nothing regarding the studio phone #, but this is probably the WORST time of year to not have it on the clipboard since we just spent the last two weeks saying the marathon phone # over and over and over!

Jackie, here's a song from the 70s right now! It'll have to take the place of Sweet for this week.
  12:21am
minnesota jeff:

EFD, if you could play '905' by The Who that would be sensational.
  12:23am
john:

Greetings from sunny (well, dark now) LA! Lousy internet at the hotel, but I'm trying to hang in there!
  12:32am
dan in falls church VA:

yes aharon there is good pho here i'm sure i know the place you're thinking of but i can't remember the name, on rt 50
  12:33am
Aharon:

Oh, man. I grew up in Malta and knew more than a few Sciclunas. It's not a big country.
(or a big internet, Dan!)
  12:35am
Kendall!:

Evan I love ya bro. I wouldn't be listening if I didn't.
  12:36am
?:

wow, comin down hard on a DJ there K-man. what's up with that?
  12:42am
minnesota jeff:

YES!!! 905!!
  12:43am
Danne D:

OMG 905!
Very under-rated Who song IMO.
  12:43am
ted:

the ox!!
  12:44am
john:

Even if it does sound like The Who trying to be Peter Gabriel...
  12:44am
minnesota jeff:

The whole album 'Who are you' is underrated.
  12:44am
Joe:

How 'bout You Better You Bet?

... no?

Ok no.
  12:45am
efd:

barely made it back from the library in time! the W's are all the way at the far end of the room.
  12:45am
efd:

don't push it, Joe.
  12:46am
minnesota jeff:

Thanks EFD!
  12:47am
john:

Personally, I'd argue Face Dances is more underrated album than Who Are You, but that might get ugly.
  12:47am
Aharon:

Wowza. Every Tu night I get at least "wow, I never knew" moment. This is one such, Minnesota Jeff. Never heard this song before. Though I'm gonna stop listening if I discover Gang of Four cut an opera album.
  12:49am
Danne D:

just caught up with the comments. Props to my fellow Dan in VA.

Sounds like I missed quite the row over Evan's difficulties with the phone number.

And the fact that Aharon knows from Malta.

And that EFD knows from old time wrestling!

These are the things that keep Tuesday nights fun and interesting!
  12:49am
Joe:

See, john is cool, he knows what the deal is.
  12:53am
minnesota jeff:

Whoa, what is this? Are you going to play Atari Teenage Riot next?
  12:54am
minnesota jeff:

Not really sure why this made me think of Atari Teenage Riot.
  12:55am
john:

I'm hoping for Sigue Sigue Sputnik.
  12:57am
Laurie:

Are you using Tom's voice modulator?
  12:58am
Joe:

the second one. the second one was the best.

sighing indecisively at the end doesn't help though.
  1:00am
Danne D:

EFD of course was late to pick up a copy of Who Are You - somehow avoid its release until much later when he was in his college years ;)
  1:02am
Danne D:

I assume Laurie is Laurie from Miami in Chapel Hill?

Btw, I keep forgetting - EFD - what's the scoop with Baseball?
  1:04am
john:

Re Adny Shernoff: I STILL wish Sgt Pepper never taught the band to play. DFFD!
  1:05am
Danne D:

a-bones :)
  1:06am
Joe:

Evan don't you have an Andy Shernoff story? Somebody down at FMU told me an Andy Shernoff story and I can't remember who it was but I feel like you were involved.
  1:07am
Aharon:

Danne, my itchy fingers just walked across the Yahoo FB site. Great minds! Sick minds?
  1:08am
efd:

I *DO* have an an Andy Shernoff story! I don't think it made it into his show, though.
  1:09am
john:

See above. Thanks for playing this!
  1:10am
Danne D:

I really wish I were as good at something, anything, as Evan is at puyying a show together.

Btw, great, sick minds indeed Aharon! Still have to figure out a name for this year's team.
  1:12am
efd:

you know, I was going to mention the baseball thing this week and then got distracted by Alex Chilton, among other things. You guys are defnitely in, though. Maybe I'll mention it in the next break for earlybirds, and at least activate the league this week so you can start fiddling with draft order (thx for that email, Aharon)
  1:16am
Joe:

Leave it to EFD to finally find a Ted Leo song I like.

This is really good.

Maybe I should try Shake the Sheets _again_ for like the 9th time
  1:17am
Aharon:

Thanks, Evan. As soon as I hit send I felt 50% more like a Jewish grandmother than I normally do.
  1:19am
efd:

is anyone out there having trouble with the playlist displaying in that window over to the left? I'm assuming not, since no one's said anything, but just wanted to check since it's been hanging for me here in the studio.
  1:20am
E.L.:

Joe, take a look at his debut as well. I've always thought it was a good entry point for skeptics and newcomers.

EFD, playlist is all good.
  1:20am
Danne D:

Great Evan :)

Bringing things full circle with Alex Chilton and baseball:

From Paul Westerberg's Op-Ed in the New York Times upon Alex Chilton's death:

"It was some years back, the last time I saw Alex Chilton. We miraculously bumped into each other one autumn evening in New York, he in a Memphis Minnie T-shirt, with take-out Thai, en route to his hotel. He invited me along to watch the World Series on TV, and I immediately discarded whatever flimsy obligation I may have had. We watched baseball, talked and laughed, especially about his current residence — he was living in, get this, a tent in Tennessee."

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/21/opinion/21westerberg.html

Playlist seems okay to me, EFD.
  1:31am
Danne D:

It's a lot of fun - Evan is a great commissioner!

And if you don't like the team you come up with, Aharon is always willing to swing a deal :)
  1:45am
E.L.:

Dälek is still one of my favorites. I've also been hitting Curse ov Dialect thanks to the EFD show. Good stuff.
  1:50am
Danne D:

Evan, thanks for another great show!
Good night Funk Faithful!
  1:53am
efd:

thanks Danne, have a good night!
  1:55pm
Mike Sin:

Listening to this fine archive -- great job Evan!

re: Chilton's "voice change" from Box Tops to Big Star.
Joe B. mentions that some of those tracks from the "1970" album (actually recorded in 1969) still retain some of that "gruff" style, and I think the year that Chilton spent in New York following the recording of these tracks, is an important part of his career that often gets overlook.

I think that Chilton was developing his more natural voice, but this was hastened by his chance meeting with Roger McGuinn in NYC. I think the influence and motivation cannot be underestimated as a result of this meeting -- I believe, in retrospect, it was a watershed moment for Chilton. There is even that pictre of Chilton standing in the Chelsea Hotel holding a copy of the Byrds' latest LP at that time called "Untitled." So much of a McGuinn influence permeates Big Star and even the demos for "Third/Sister Lovers."
