Bassekou Kouyate & Amy Sacko + Burkina Electric

This is going to be an amazing summer for world music and especially African music in NYC. Tonight we get an early taste from two very innovative bands that will be making the summer scene:

First, an intimate visit with Bassekou Kouyate & Amy Sacko, husband and wife leaders of Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba. Kouyate took a traditional West African lute, known in his native in Bambara as the ngoni, plugged it in, and made it the centerpiece of his band (which features several of them) and indeed a brand new musical genre.

Then, a full set from the equally visionary Burkina Electric, a truly unique African electric / avant garde hybrid: Charismatic singer Mai Lingani and guitarist Wende K. Blass from Burkina Faso team up with African-inspired Austrian avant garde percussionist / composer Lukas Ligeti and the Neu Deutche Welle (80s German "new wave") electro-avant-pop mastermind, Pyrolator (member of recently revived Fehlfarben, veteran of Der Plan and DAF and founder / director of the seminal label AtaTak).

Burkina Electric will share a Central Park Summerstage bill with Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba on Sunday afternoon July 25 (along w/ Fool's Gold), plus they'll be playing the Bang on a Can Marathon at the World Financial Center Winter Garden Sunday June 27. And scoring a rare summer trifecta they'll also hit Celebrate Brooklyn in Prospect Park on Thursday evening July 8, providing live accompaniment to Karole Armitage's African-inspired dance piece Itutu.

Big thanks to our illustrious engineers Bil Bowen (Burkina Electric) and Dave Mambach (Bassekou Kouyate / Amy Sacko)!
