Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from June 8, 2010 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Favoriting June 8, 2010: special: Experimental cassette culture w/RYAN MARTIN from DAIS Records/Period Tapes

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

PhotobucketPhotobucket
Brian is joined today by Ryan Martin of Dais Records/Period Tapes/York Factory Complaint to dig out dusty boxes of found tapes old and new, discussing cassette culture starting in the late '70s post-industrial / synth realm and going through the '80s and '90s up until the deluged tape scene today. Playing avant Fluxus cassettes, artist recordings, tape manipulations, unheard dialogue, drone noise and warped field recordings. Things are going to get weird. Thanks to Period's Lou Calderola for photosnaps! Check out DAIS Records, a label co-run by Ryan, and Period Tapes, run by Ryan and Lou.

Wonderful stuff. This was the world I came from, seems like centuries ago. Impossibly limited handmade tape-label stuff..... Still have devious fantasies of re-issuing much of that stuff, the old comps... but no time, no time...
  3:57pm

it's just a minor point... i went to Danceteria to see Neubauten but they weren't there for some reason. i don't know if they ever actually played there.
  5:09pm
BT:

I was thinking that was the joint where they started the fire...wrong perhaps!
  5:11pm
don:

that was probably in '83. i saw them finally in boston, '85. no fire on the stage!
  5:14pm
Ryan:

they definitely did play there on February 23, 1984. A bootleg exists of the show. I know there were supposed to have been other shows but thats the only know of a recording of that show.
  5:15pm
jeff-m:

digging the show, thanks Brian and guests
  5:16pm
don:

  5:17pm
Ryan:

From Pop Matters interview:
"...looking back nostalgically over the band’s New York City performance history (after announcing, sadly, that this tour would probably be their last in America), recalling the long since disappeared venues they had played—the Danceteria, the Palladium—and the trouble they caused with their eccentric stage show."
  5:20pm
don:

now that is some impressive encyclopedic knowledge :^) in fact as i listen i'm straightening up around here, unearthing tons of tapes myself. just found Noizunzuri, recorded on WFMU 8/27/90. i was looking for that.

  5:51pm
paul b:

I knew a guy in college, Mark Robinson, who used to do this sort of thing: Self-made self-illustrated, self-distributed cassettes. I still have one of them, an X Mass cassette I think it says on it. He would number them as official outputs of his label which was called TeenBeat though he rarely made more than a handful of any particular one. Mark also had a band called Unrest.
  5:52pm
BT:

Coincidentally Paul B: Unrest will be live playing on this very program July 20th!
  5:53pm
lou:

YES! Unrest!
  5:55pm
