A supercharged genre-bashing show live from Lincoln Center Out of Doors, one of New York's great free summer music series (currently celebrating its 40th anniversary).

We begin by hearing the Bang on a Can All-Stars' artsy and hyper-eclectic street band spin-off, Asphalt Orchestra recorded as they bobbed and weaved their way around Lincoln Center Plaza on Thursday evening August 5 (part of a week-long homestand on the plaza). Then we move to the present, the final two songs of Asphalt Orchestra's August 7 set live from the stage at Damrosch Bandshell - compositions by Bjork and Zappa.

We continue on stage at Damrosch Bandshell with two bands that (we must confess) truly need to be seen to be believed: First, Chicago's massive circus punk marching band / self-proclaimed extreme band geeks Mucca Pazza, who have taken the the marching band motif to an alternate dimension, with wildly colorful drum major unis, caution tape pom poms, and over-the-top choreography that both sends up and celebrates the joy of playing in the band.

And finally, as if it isn't worked up enough, the big crowd is driven into an even further frenzy / catharsis by the wildly charismatic kings of the New Mediterraneo electro sound, Balkan Beat Box, who infuse hip-hop attitude and punk intensity into big beat anthems blending sounds of Eastern Europe, Israel, Spain and North Africa.

Big thanks to everyone who made this broadcast possible: From WFMU: Our illustrious tech director Bil Bowen, engineers Ernie Indradat and Mark Koch, engineering assistant Robinette Jones, FMA and wireless attache Jason Sigal, all around helper and moral support administrator Katie Gentile, board op Eliza Topham-White with assistance from Sue Per, and tech consultant Scott Williams. And from Lincoln Center: Bill Bragin, Jill Jill Sternheimer, Randall Etheredge, Marian Skokan, Jessica Olsen, Mara Forbes and everyone else who lent a hand - thank you all for being so helpful and friendly and supportive.

Great show, I also wish I was there.

Thanks Maria and Rebecca! It's been quite a night. Mucca Pazza were an incredible spectacle of extreme marching band mania - a band that has to be seen to be believed - and Balkan Beat Box as usual are belting it out big time!
