Kobo Town Live From WOMEX Plus Lots More Good Stuff

Kobo Town during our joint WFMU / KEXP session at the WOMEX radio studio in Copenhagen.

Trinidadian/Canadian songwriter Drew Gonsalves leads Kobo Town, Toronto's spirited interpreters of vintage early 20th Century calypso style. Kobo Town revisits classic songs by Golden Age calypso greats like Roaring Lion, Lord Invader, King Radio and Attila the Hun. But Gonzalves and co. also craft witty new of-the-moment songs - applying the genre's rich and famously critical lyricism to contemporary topics like the war in Iraq, domestic violence, immigration, and globalization.

Kobo Town performs songs from its debut album Independence as well as its forthcoming sophomore release in a session and interview recorded in collaboration with Jon Kertzer of KEXP Seattle's The Best Ambiance at the 2010 WOMEX World Music Expo in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Sweet Micky (real name Michel Martelly) who has played many a time at SOBs in NYC came in third in the election for Haitian President. Nobody got enough votes for outright election, but only the two highest vote-getters qualify for a runoff. Martelly complained of massive election irregularities, and his supporters protested and rioted, and now a recount is taking place (although Martelly says that he doesn't consider the recount process valid either).
