Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from February 8, 2011 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Listener comments!

  3:04pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

present
  3:04pm
bill:

Tuesday afternoon - wasn't that a Moody Blues song?
  3:04pm
jljl:

Stormtrooper didn't sound metal, new wave of british or otherwise, to me.
  3:04pm
SiHV:

Ditto.
  3:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

I approach Negative Approach positively.
  3:09pm
Swami:

Oh man, flashback time! Thanks Brian! Negative Approach always sounded a cut above the other hc bands of the era, imho
  3:10pm
jljl:

I think there's a reason these tapes were kept in the basement tho.
  3:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

@jljl: That's because it was heavy, I suppose that comp is New OR Wave OR Of OR British OR Heavy OR Metal.
  3:13pm
jljl:

i was talking about NA. Would like to get my hands on that NWOBHM comp tho. Raven is in the area this weekend, should try to go.
  3:13pm
BT:

have to say the NWOBHM comp aint so hot, that song excepted
  3:14pm
jljl:

shoot. i've gotten lots of comps lately so I'm probably all set. I think Metalblade put out a good one about 10 years ago I should track down.
  3:21pm
CheriPi:

That;s too bad BT-I guess it's back to obscurity then for most of those NWOBHM bands :(
  3:24pm
northguineahills:

the Adrian Democ is quite nice.
  3:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

Great Adrian Democ --is this NEW classical? A soundtrack?
  3:32pm
jljl:

i know this is a weird time to ask this with the ethereal stuff playing, but does anyone here like 70s glam?
  3:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

70s Glam, 70s Glitter, yeah, I like those. Not heavily but I enjoy especially the British stuff of that era. Brian's played some on occasion.

Ethereal stuff I like a lot though!
  3:35pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Bowie is about as glam as I go
  3:36pm
Matt from Springfield:

Check out these comps: "Glitter From The Litter Bin", "Glitterbest", and "The Roots of Punk", but I think the last one was only an NME music sampler disc.
@DCE: How bout Bowie-Mott collabs?
  3:36pm
jljl:

is it bad form to promote a special my pal and I are doing at WMBR Wed. and Thurs.? Should be interesting and we're digging fairly deep. Got Glitterbest on the lisit along with Velvet Tinmine and more.
  3:37pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

bad form or not, you just did it
  3:38pm
Mike East:

I just made a mixtape with Bowie's covers of White Light/White Heat and Let's Spend the Night Together. Ziggy Stardust Soundtrack is a great double LP.
  3:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

I may take a listen--WMBR, are you an MIT student?
  3:40pm
jljl:

not that smart (or young), it's community radio. if you guys are in the mood:

  3:42pm
jljl:

Dead Corp Eyes: now the full promo has been done. Back to Brian's show, I have to admit I wait for the louder stuff.
  3:48pm
BT:

hey now
  3:49pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

don't dream it's over
  3:50pm
Cecile:

Hey, do you have Downer Rock Apocalypse on ya, Brian? That always lifts the spirits.
  3:50pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

boy did I hate that song but it stuck in my brain all these years.
  3:54pm
Swami:

Brian's show is one I make every effort to hear live. Quiet, loud, droney, melodic etc. Always interesting!
  3:55pm
BSI:

Quiet, loud, droney, melodic...... just like life, it would seem...
  3:55pm
CheriPi:

Oh wow!
  3:55pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Swami, BSI: That's why I love it, in a good show you shouldn't know what to expect next!

Hooray, nice Kevin Ayers, gotta get that album!
  3:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yeah, like this..."bleu"grass New Order??!
  3:57pm
Joe D:

YES!!!!!!
  4:01pm
Cecile:

you should play some Telephoned. I like their tweaks of hip-hop songs.
  4:01pm
jljl:

someone should do a long tainted love set
  4:04pm
Andrew:

i'm so happy my 'field day' happened to fall on Tuesday this week.. hello, for the first time, from chicago!!
  4:04pm
jason:

Cecile that's awesome that you're a Telephoned fan! Sammy Bananas!
  4:08pm
Cecile:

I was writing a "coming soon" item for them and Chromeo, but Telephoned had to cancel. I ended up a big fan after listening to their stuff for that piece.
  4:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hello, for the first time, to Andrew!

@Cecile: Tweaked hip-hop...ever hear of "chopped and screwed" from Houston? DJ Screw's slowed down hip hop tracks were apparently very influential, heading into chillwave and other dragged music to date.
  4:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

I heard of it not too long ago but haven't yet heard any...have you, or perhaps Brian, heard any?
  4:10pm
serge:

Merci pour Erik M
  4:11pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Cecile, what medium did Telephoned use to communicate their cancellation notice?
  4:11pm
Cecile:

Yes, Matt. I'm not a huge expert but I've heard some. I have the UGK chopped and screwed disc. It's pretty cool. Very slow and warped. There's some great sound effects over top, too.
  4:12pm
Cecile:

LOL!
A big black marker X on the gig schedule where their name was. I was bummed.
  4:14pm
Godard:

This could easily pass as a Godard film
  4:14pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Cecile: Thanks! Sounds like a good lead.
  4:16pm
Cecile:

in the early 00's they used to issue some albums straight AND with a C&S version. My UGK disc is just a best of with effects...
  4:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

Cecile, comments board Resident Expert!
  4:19pm
Carmichael:

Hi Brian and people. Thanks for the Kevin Ayers back there. Good memories.
  4:25pm
Cecile:

Nah, I'm just old.
  4:25pm
yair Yona:

Good to hear you again Brian
  4:25pm
yair Yona:

Good to hear you again Brian
  4:27pm
BT:

Yair, nice to see you man! You going to Barca again this year?
  4:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

Whoa, didn't realize someone covered George Harrison's Beatle composition "The Inner Light"!
  4:40pm
Lou:

whatever happened to the Kelley Stoltz Porcupine record?
  4:47pm
Tyrone:

Katharina Tunicata is a member of The Sea Donkeys not monkeys
the monkees were a hit tv show featuring mike nesmith on liquid paper
  4:47pm
BT:

Kelley said he was skipping it.
  4:48pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

really liking Red Asphalt!
  5:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

@BT: Really interesting 7SD, I liked it!
That's another idea for 7SD--"documentaries" with the other staff and radio techs of WFMU on how a radio station is run, while Andy tries to ask questions, participate, and otherwise try to fill the hour!
  5:00pm
Godard:

From black metal to this, I love it!
  5:21pm
bill:

Who's Zu teaming with here?
  5:22pm
BT:

James Plotkin remix
  5:23pm
bill:

  5:31pm
