Familiar & forgotten gems from 50-plus years of music on the darker side, shoegaze, synthpop, goth, psychedelia, darkwave, with unapologetic detours into 70s pop. In a dark night of the soul, it's always 3 o'clock in the morning.

Listener comments!

  3:06am
Danne D:

Hi Julie :)
Hi everyone :)
Alas, I will be listening on the archive (I have to get up for work after all) but I wanted to say hi.

Also, while Ms Mayhem has been adopted for 2011 (and I will note that our Valentine girl was one of the first 2 DJs to be so adopted this year), this message board has not. You can do so here if you like: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wfmu/5453175803/in/set-72157603873576097/

Plus - since board celebrities like coalhard and Marmalade Kitty (and numerous others who will be cross with me for not singling them out in my sleepy fog) are not themselves adoptable this is the next best thing :)

And with that, I depart, Have a great show Julie! :) I'm sure it'll be another classic like last week's was!
  3:09am
Julie:

wow thanks for the plug Danne! See ya in the archive!
  3:10am
Danne D:

(undepart) My pleasure Julie :) Looking forward to it :) G'night
  3:21am
zap:

Emily. Nice
  3:50am
yair:

will Amilia by Joni Mitchell counts for this show?
  4:00am
Julie:

Hmm..it might have. I had so much stuff I had to eliminate some, but I didn't even know about that one!
  4:34am
Dino Croketti:

suggestion for your next air play session
play songs with Julie in the title
  4:35am
Julie:

There are a lot of singers name Julie, only can think of two songs. A little too self-serving I think.
  4:36am
ausmanx:

I can barely think of anything more ridiculous than Carla Bruni doing Emily Dickinson... sorry I missed that one!
  4:38am
Julie:

Carla's actually not a bad singer. I listened to her before she hooked up with Sarkozy or however it's spelled
  4:59am
Marmalade kitty:

Good morning (:
  5:00am
Julie:

Good morning, MK! Danne mentioned you in the comments this morning. You're a star!
  5:14am
noah:

Love your voice and the background music. Now I can finally sleep in peace.
  5:18am
Julie:

Thank you, Noah, and goodnight!
  5:20am
Skirkie:

First chance to sit and comment. I've been up at 4:30 every day since December, and I've enjoyed the second half of your show most out of all weekday shows.
  5:22am
Julie:

Thank you Skirkie! Sorry you have to get up at such a lousy hour, but hopefully the music makes it a little more bearable.
  5:24am
Marmalade kitty:

I suspect an Emily type of theme today..
  5:25am
Julie:

Just the first set. Although from what I found I could've probably done the whole show Emilyish,
  5:26am
Skirkie:

That's the thing, I no longer HAVE to be get up, but now the body clock is set. So I'm up. No big.
  5:27am
Julie:

It's the same thing that gets me wound up at 3am on the nights I don't have a show!
  5:28am
Skirkie:

Ha, I never listened to any of the OTHER Songs from the Big Chair.
  5:29am
Julie:

Shout? Or Everybody Wants to Rule the World?
  5:30am
Skirkie:

Oh, Shout is on that too? Ok, duh, one other.
  5:33am
Marmalade kitty:

Do you like any songs by China Crisis..?
  5:34am
Julie:

You know, MK, I'm really not familiar with them.
  5:41am
Marmalade kitty:

"Difficult shapes and passive Rhythms, some people think it's fun to entertain.." - 1982 China Crisis debut album. John Peel rated it as one of his best '80's debut albums. They were never as popular as they might have been..
  5:42am
pierre:

Bonjour Julie, noon in Paris. Great show
  5:45am
Skirkie:

Man, this was one of the last few videos I remember seeing before MTV stopped playing them altogether.
  5:46am
Julie:

Merci, Pierre!
  5:47am
Marmalade kitty:

She comes in colors, Love..
  5:50am
pierre:

de rien Julie, and toujours great and soft voice
  5:58am
maja:

Loved the show!
  6:09am
Julie:

Thank you, Maja!!
  10:52pm
Matt from Springfield:

Great show as always, Julie! Cocteau's Treasure album into This Mortal Coil, the first time I heard Renaissance, and plenty of great Emilys! But I'm surprised you were never acquainted with an Emily until last week--I've known several before, as it's been one of the most popular girls' names my whole life (don't get me started on "Matt", there's mobs of us!)

And don't forget the demo of "Rhiannon" -- lately you are the Queen of the Bonus Track at FMU!
  2:34pm
Van:

Excellent show! New discoveries! So many Emilies! And another Emilie connection from Emilie Autum's wiki page: "Based on her diary written in red crayon while institutionalized, the book incorporated talking rats and the diary of a fictional Victorian inmate named "Emily"."
