Pretty good, though I skipped the title essay - sometimes it drives me crazy reading writers writing about other writers
	1:25pm J-Mar: I am trying to catch up on my backlog of New Yorker magazines after having dived fully into Barbara Demick's "Nothing to Envy: The Lives of Ordinary North Koreans," which was fascinating, disturbing and, at times, strangely affirming.
	1:26pm Louisville Dan: "Like a Fiery Elephant: The Story of B.S. Johnson" by Jonathan Coe. Just got it in the mail and cracked it open.
	1:26pm Handsome Harry: Christianity: The First Three Thousand Years by Diarmaid MacCulloch interspersed with some essays by Warren Buffet. Warren knows how to make and old business cliché sound new again....or not-as-old. I think Diarmaid is in a black metal band.

	1:36pm BodegaMan: "On Being Certain" by Robert Burton - seems to be a more in-depth "Blink" (Gladwell). subtitle 'believing you are right even when you're not.' So far comes off as an exploration of the concept of "certainty". v good read so far. Also just finished "Blue City" by Ross Macdonald - 1940s crime fiction done really well.
	1:40pm coelacanth: Well Kurt- not easy for me either,but i've done that twice in the last month... rather enjoyed "child of god" (mcCarthey),but by 1/4 into "the road" i felt i got the jist of a book that was depressing me...and (coincidentally) "on the road" is simply annoying and boring.'cant relate to the idiot main character or his foolish friends...'tried jumping ahead to see if it went anywhere. it doesn't. ... That's what i'm NOT reading...

	2:20pm coelacanth: i never got through a fictional book until the 39th year of my life.I read"siddhartha" because i figured it was a philosophy book disguised as a novel. but it opened me up. A friend lent me Child of God. Between that,"Frankenstein", &"Slapstick", i grew to really appreciate HOW a story was told- not just the story....but still i read nonfiction 2-1. ... maja. maybe i'll pick it up again.i haven't passed it on yet.
	2:29pm BodegaMan: I used to only read fiction. Then I don't know what happend - maybe my novel got rejected too many times and I was holding a grudge against the publishing world. Now I try to switch between non fiction (psychology and politics) and fiction. I find myself staying away from literary fiction tho - my grudge still maintained over one market segment. I'm interested in some good music reads...

	2:30pm still b/p: Odd book salad -- quick surfing/rebrowsing in recent days to pick excerpts for a themed reading/performance event on Fri. about food and drink -- Heaney's Beowulf, Odyssey, Last Days of Pompeii, the Bible. Final selections: 2 Japanese Edo-period poems; New Yorker writer Joseph Mitchell on the lower standards and more colorful days in a Manhattan joint before its refurbishing, and (at the host's request) Leopold Bloom cooks himself a kidney.
	2:30pm dc chris: I think it's one of those "older you get" things. I use to read nothing but fiction but now it's all evolution, ancient history, bikes, and music.

Someone else doing some Falstaff, a few other readings, and "a puppet show of raunchy Rabelasian appetites" is promised! Yum.
	2:40pm Parq: Just finished the bio of Al Jaffee. Not stellar writing, but good enough to be carried by a great story, which Jaffee's life is. Got to see the MoCCA show, too.
