Listener comments!

  12:08pm
pierre:

Bonjour !
  12:10pm
Cecile:

Kurt!
  12:10pm
annie:

hi kurt
  12:13pm
Cecile:

Hi, annie, pierre!
  12:14pm
DJ KG:

hello everyone
  12:14pm
Jack:

Hey everyone!
Kurt - I know I've told Fabio this: there's something wonderful about blasting out strange avant garde music on a sunny day. ( hope you don't mind I'm vacuuming while I listen...? )
  12:15pm
pierre:

hi Cecile, from Ken to Kurt.
  12:17pm
DJ KG:

jack - i wouldn't have it any other way!
  12:22pm
dc chris:

still chris
  12:24pm
Cecile:

From New York to LA :D
  12:24pm
dale:

fine show. locker cleanout = drug inspection.
  12:25pm
pierre:

nice
  12:38pm
Handsome Harry:

I don't feel tardy. I do feel somewhat intellectually truncated, however.
  12:39pm
Hugo:

Appreciate hearing Axel Dörner. I've seen him a number of times, though in different settings from this one ...
  12:43pm
Jack:

The new vacuum's droning at about an A flat. When the Dirt Finder feature kicks in, a red light goes on and there's an overtone - somewhere between E sharp and F.
It's going well with what you're playing...
  12:45pm
DJ KG:

niiiiiiice
  12:55pm
Handsome Harry:

If only there were a "Tobacco Auction during a Thunderstorm" track. That would have really nailed it.
  1:01pm
BodegaMan:

started listening late today, a cold start for me during the locked grooves worked well enough.
  1:01pm
Jack:

How about livestock auctioneers? I use this one a lot:
http://www.lmaweb.com/WLAC/world-champions.html
  1:02pm
Cecile:

LOL! chicken.

I remember seeing Sonic Youth playing at an all-women's college in town, and they were going to have Cock-ESP open for them. The school said no, and Thurston went on this hilarious rant talking about how the school took down down posters and banned them from the show, using the phrase Cock-ESP every other word.
  1:03pm
Cecile:

Thurston kind of proved his point.
  1:14pm
Handsome Harry:

I maintain that Glen Campbell still has one of the best mugshots out there. Cold as ice, that guy.
  1:17pm
BodegaMan:

you really need the whole mouth to pronounce speak "Volkstumlich"
  1:17pm
still b/p:

Does the new Mattie Ross give Matt Damon shit about Texans cultivating their hair like lettuce, the way the earlier Mattie did to Glen Campbell?
  1:18pm
max:

hilfe, wos isn das??
  1:19pm
coelacanth:

Anytime is the Right time- for Yodelling.
  1:20pm
coelacanth:

(i'm so glad i have a whole mouth!)
  1:22pm
max:

Aber schön gesagt
  1:22pm
coelacanth:

Just say Volkstumlich again.
  1:22pm
Jon:

al green - for the good times?
  1:23pm
Cecile:

Good for you Kurt! Life's too short.

I am reading Dog Fancy, I got the puppy issue in the mail yesterday.
  1:25pm
bennett4senate:

hey I'm reading The Disappointment Artist, a book of essays by Jonathan Letham - didn't start it 'til I had already renewed it twice (y'know, let it ripen). Pretty good, though I skipped the title essay - sometimes it drives me crazy reading writers writing about other writers
  1:25pm
J-Mar:

I am trying to catch up on my backlog of New Yorker magazines after having dived fully into Barbara Demick's "Nothing to Envy: The Lives of Ordinary North Koreans," which was fascinating, disturbing and, at times, strangely affirming.
  1:26pm
Louisville Dan:

"Like a Fiery Elephant: The Story of B.S. Johnson" by Jonathan Coe. Just got it in the mail and cracked it open.
  1:26pm
Handsome Harry:

Christianity: The First Three Thousand Years by Diarmaid MacCulloch interspersed with some essays by Warren Buffet. Warren knows how to make and old business cliché sound new again....or not-as-old. I think Diarmaid is in a black metal band.
  1:28pm
Handsome Harry:

Pardon me, "Buffett." Though I hear the buffet is pretty swell, too.
  1:34pm
northguineahills:

I love Margarida Garcia! and, together w/ Marcia Bassett!
  1:36pm
BodegaMan:

"On Being Certain" by Robert Burton - seems to be a more in-depth "Blink" (Gladwell). subtitle 'believing you are right even when you're not.' So far comes off as an exploration of the concept of "certainty". v good read so far.

Also just finished "Blue City" by Ross Macdonald - 1940s crime fiction done really well.
  1:40pm
coelacanth:

Well Kurt- not easy for me either, but i've done that twice in the last month... rather enjoyed "child of god" (mcCarthey),but by 1/4 into "the road" i felt i got the jist of a book that was depressing me...and (coincidentally) "on the road" is simply annoying and boring.'cant relate to the idiot main character or his foolish friends...'tried jumping ahead to see if it went anywhere. it doesn't. ... That's what i'm NOT reading...
  1:41pm
DJ KG:

you know, when i ask you guys to post what you're reading, it's almost never stuff i know. i guess that means the world is great big, huh?
  1:51pm
Ed Art:

yeah. DJ ..try if not
electrical prong from hell john trubee
  1:58pm
maja:

w.g. sebald, austerlitz and letters by van gogh, for me the road was huge.
  1:58pm
dc chris:

reading Bicycling Science by David Gordon WIlson
  2:01pm
DJ KG:

i notice too that when i ask, people are usually reading nonfiction. interesting. i tend to go back and forth with novels and music history.
  2:04pm
maja:

Great this Bach
  2:04pm
dc chris:

yeah, I'm digging the Bach. This is for solo violin right?
  2:10pm
DJ KG:

Composed for solo violin, yes. Recording here, of course, is on saxophone.
  2:20pm
coelacanth:

i never got through a fictional book until the 39th year of my life.I read"siddhartha" because i figured it was a philosophy book disguised as a novel. but it opened me up. A friend lent me Child of God. Between that,"Frankenstein", &"Slapstick", i grew to really appreciate HOW a story was told- not just the story....but still i read nonfiction 2-1. ... maja. maybe i'll pick it up again.i haven't passed it on yet.
  2:29pm
BodegaMan:

I used to only read fiction. Then I don't know what happend - maybe my novel got rejected too many times and I was holding a grudge against the publishing world. Now I try to switch between non fiction (psychology and politics) and fiction. I find myself staying away from literary fiction tho - my grudge still maintained over one market segment.

I'm interested in some good music reads...
  2:29pm
dc chris:

I don't know if I can stand being chris anymore..
  2:30pm
still b/p:

Odd book salad -- quick surfing/rebrowsing in recent days to pick excerpts for a themed reading/performance event on Fri. about food and drink -- Heaney's Beowulf, Odyssey, Last Days of Pompeii, the Bible. Final selections: 2 Japanese Edo-period poems; New Yorker writer Joseph Mitchell on the lower standards and more colorful days in a Manhattan joint before its refurbishing, and (at the host's request) Leopold Bloom cooks himself a kidney.
  2:30pm
dc chris:

I think it's one of those "older you get" things. I use to read nothing but fiction but now it's all evolution, ancient history, bikes, and music.
  2:31pm
Daniel:

Parzival. Because Bolaño name-checked it, and because I love that kind of thing. How the story gets told: "I tell the string without the bow. The string is an image."
  2:32pm
DJ KG:

b/p. love j. mitchell.
  2:33pm
Daniel:

b/p: Where's the food performance?
  2:40pm
still b/p:

Sad sunset...after the Joe Gould affair, Mitchell kept the office at the magazine for years but wrote almost nuthin', right?

Event (small but fun) in Portland, Maine. Someone else doing some Falstaff, a few other readings, and "a puppet show of raunchy Rabelasian appetites" is promised! Yum.
  2:40pm
Parq:

Just finished the bio of Al Jaffee. Not stellar writing, but good enough to be carried by a great story, which Jaffee's life is. Got to see the MoCCA show, too.
  2:42pm
DJ KG:

(hey parq, i just learned from sw who you are on fb. didn't even know i knew you there!)
  2:50pm
Cecile:

I love Al Jaffee's art!
  2:50pm
coelacanth:

BodegaMan: if you're interested in "blues",or the roots of music most people listen to for that matter- "Nothin' But The Blues" is my favorite book about music.-14 chapters.14 (?) authors. i have never finished it. keep returning to certain chapters. so much info. ..but it's big for supine reading at the end of a day, which is my usual.
  2:56pm
dc chris:

nice, thanks coelacanth. Read the Howlin Wolf biography coupla years back. Story is amazing, writing is ok.
  2:57pm
Looms:

Nice show!
  3:00pm
coelacanth:

Thank you Kurt.
  3:02pm
maja:

Yes yes yes ohhh too late yes NICE!
