  6:03am
Meghan:

ha! Morning all!
  6:04am
Elwyn:

Dang. Cutting and pasting this: http://www.skye4birds.com/ascii.htm

didn't work.
  6:04am

  6:08am
Elwyn:

@Dave: As a mature and intelligent adult, my only response can be:
http://wtf.ronowicker.com/ascii-art-flip-the-bird-flipping-off-give-the-bird/

Just kidding.
  6:09am
Meghan:

ha! don't worry Bennett! it happens. Now go get me some mini eggs!
  6:10am
Dave B:

HA! we use that very ASCII at work all the time. The "Field Guide to the North American Bird" is one of my bathroom books. Nothing like greeting guests with it.
  6:13am
pierre:

CUI CUI

  6:23am
Elwyn:

I wonder where Churck is. He's sure to have some stories about shooting birds.

I really disappointed an out of town friend today by saying I wasn't going to see some emo/Christian-lite band Emery, tonight.
  6:24am
Meghan:

ewwww Christian lite band. Did you say that was the reason WHY you weren't going.
  6:26am
pierre:

dear Dave B you are not entirely wrong, "Coucou" means "hi", but its also the french for the "Cuckoo"

(when i was younger i wanted to be an Ornithologist, i used to wander in the forest with a tape recorder, and i used to draw brid, mostly crows, ravens, pigeons, and sparrows) Meghan, I LOVE THIS THEME
  6:27am
Dave B:

Christian Lite Tenet: Jesus was adopted
  6:27am
hamburger / london:

were there any songs written about John James Audobon? :)
  6:28am
Elwyn:

No/ How do you politely say "There's only two things worse than a Christian band: 1) a Christian band that hates themselves so much that they try to avoid that label 2) an emo Christian band that hate themselves so much that they try to avoid being labeled Christian".

Anyhoo, she's going alone to that gig and I'm loitering on the web with all of you, my crazy friends with good taste in music.
  6:30am
Dave B:

C.W. McCall has a song about Audobon

Audobon Iowa that is...
  6:30am
Meghan:

Wise choice. You should have "saved" her! ha!
  6:33am
jamief:

STEEL DRUMS its the intrument who impersonate the sun best, if the sun would play an instrument it would be steel drums
  6:36am
Rob from Maryland:

Morning all. Meghan, are your birds confined to song titles or are you going to be including groups with bird names?
  6:36am
Elwyn:

I need to point her away from mainstream "alternative" radio. It's just crap. I hate most radio in Australia even Triple J.

If I still listened to radio, I'd probably listen to FBI which has good DJs and is a listener supported radio station. I probably should listen to 2ER which is partly owned by the university I work for.
  6:37am
Jeff:

You're the best! What a great way to start my day.
  6:38am
Elwyn:

"I hate the fucking Eagles" - The Dude

  6:41am
Elwyn:

Has anyone here ever tried killing seagulls using aspirin? Yeah, I'm looking in your direction Evil Brady!
  6:42am
Rob from Maryland:

Thanks Meghan! Too bad I wasn't awake when you played Little Jimmy Dickens. I loved that song when I was a kid.
  6:42am
Dave B:

Not asprin...
Alka Seltzer, and no I've never tried
  6:47am
Dave B:

There used to be a mocking bird in my neighborhood who's song, upon careful observation, was the imitation of car alarms going off on the street.

I guess thats all he ever heard.
  6:47am
Marmalade Kitty:

Muppets!! Yay!
  6:47am
Elwyn:

@Meghan: Thank you for this tit content. ;-)
  6:48am
pierre:

Electrelane - Birds
Blind Lemon Jefferson - Eagle Eyed Mama

And of course the one and ONLY HASIL ADKINS with his chicken walk !
  6:54am
Elwyn:

I'm definitely buying a chicken kebab as soon as this show finishes.
  6:55am
Rob from Maryland:

This isn't a song, but a humor presentation at a scientific meeting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yL_-1d9OSdk (Chicken Chicken Chicken). And kebab sounds nice! As soon as it gets to be lunch time I'll go a-looking for some.
  6:56am
Dave B:

ever notice that poultry (chicken, duck, goose, turkey) don't have cute names like beef and pork?
  6:56am
pierre:

Tom Lehrer - Poisoning Pigeon in the park
  6:59am
Elwyn:

@Dave: What sort of cute names?

@Meghan: I guess we aren't getting "Heaven is a Place on Earth" next week unless it's a cover...
  6:59am
Marmalade Kitty:

this is positively CUCKO.o
  7:00am

  7:07am
Meghan:

Thanks Other Dave! Sadly, I don't think I have any blackbird songs in the line up......hopefully he won't take offense....
  7:07am
Elwyn:

@DaveB:
Those aren't cute names!

What about these:
Chicken

= Buffalo Wings

Also, from poultry, you can make Turducken!
  7:08am
Courbet!:

Well that's too cute, dave in Ireland.
  7:10am
other dave in ireland:

he just left when you said that meghan - I wish I was lying, oh dear... this is awkward... who knew blackbirds were so sensitive! (or that they could read!)
  7:11am
jamief:

hey meg...a very big thank you for the T Rex....gonna dig that out later!
  7:12am
Meghan:

Wow, who knew! Silly blackbird. Maybe he's grabbing some friends....

No worries jamief. Always good to play some T Rex!
  7:14am
other dave in ireland:

now replaced by a coo-ing pigeon, underwater theme park brings all the birds to the yard.
  7:16am
Marmalade Kitty:

Any songs by Clay Pigeon?
  7:17am
Meghan:

ha! Yes, at 6 pm you can hear some Clay Pigeon!
  7:18am
Chuck:

A) Wake to alarm

  7:20am
pierre:

Thanks for that Meghan - the parrot sketch, i just love it
  7:21am
Chuck:

I can only surmise that I actually needed the extra Z's...
  7:21am
Elwyn:

Yo Chuck!

Sort of on the bird related theme, in the USA, do your newspapers regularly quote random people from Twitter and Facebook in articles? They do in Australia and I'm getting sick of it.
  7:23am
Chuck:

Not sure what newspapers do. Haven't looked at one in years. But that does sound stupid, Elwyn. Who cares what a random stranger says?
  7:25am
dirty old man:

You should listen to "cuckoo" by Kaleidoscope, a 60's San Fran band. Far Out!
  7:25am
dirty old man:

You should listen to "cuckoo" by Kaleidoscope, a 60's San Fran band. Far Out!
  7:26am
Richard from Venezuela:

Good morning Meghan and all the listeners.
  7:27am
Elwyn:

@Meghan: I'm ignorant: I didn't realise Orioles where birds.

@Chuck: Yeah. If I wanted to read what some random, possibly uniformed ignoranus has to say, I can read Twitter myself.
  7:27am
Chuck:

Duck! DOM double posted! (duck pun intended)
  7:28am
Meghan:

morning Richard!
  7:28am
Andy in Berlin:

Hard at work but taking a break. Wouldn't you know I would emerge during the cheese section!
Good Morning!
  7:28am
Meghan:

chuck, that is what happens sometimes when posting from your phone. delay

Morning Andy! Glad you could get your daily dose of cheese today!
  7:30am
yair yona (tel aviv):

every show about birds, should feature a track from Bert Jansch's Avocet album. hint . hint. hint.
  7:30am
Chuck:

Hum... And I have a whole duck in the freezer. Sounds like an Easter feast!
  7:31am
Dave B:

@Chuck - viaduct?
  7:32am
Meghan:

hehe.... sorry Yair! sadly I had to make cuts i didn't want to....

Vye not a cat!
  7:32am
Chuck:

Would it be considered mean to have rabbit for Easter?

I don't know, Dave, why a duck? Got all the Marx Bros. on DVD!
  7:32am
Richard from Venezuela:

I've a lovely parrot called Valentin.
  7:33am
Chuck:

Is he nailed to his perch, Richard?
  7:33am
Meghan:

I think everyone should. The easter bunny is there for a reason. Just don't stuff it with jellybeans....
  7:35am
Richard from Venezuela:

@chuck: Its free in his little cage.
  7:35am
Dave B:

I've heard tell that Sir Gerald Nabarro has a pet prawn called Simon - you wouldn't call him a loony! Furthermore Dawn Pathorpe, the lady show jumper, had a clam called Stafford, after the late chancellor. Alan Bullock has two pikes, both called Chris, and Marcel Proust had an 'addock!
  7:36am
Elwyn:

I've never eaten rabbit...
  7:36am
Chuck:

They may call them pets, Dave. I call them dinner...
  7:38am
Chuck:

Interesting, Elwyn. I thought Australia sometimes has rabbit population explosions...
  7:39am
Chuck:

Get one, Elwyn! I've got a terrific Italian recipe for them. Meghan's had it she can testify to the deliciousness...
  7:39am
doc henry:

Man, this song sounds as good now as it did way back then. Moby Grape and Buffalo Springfield...what a tag team they were!
  7:40am
Parq:

Staggering in at the halfway point, Miss Meg. Looks like you've made some superb choices. I may have to go back to the archives on this one.
  7:40am
Meghan:

it was tasty. though I would say rabbit is a bit bony......
  7:40am
Meghan:

Woah! Parq doing the archives?! *pats myself on the back*
  7:41am
annie:

meghan do you have "white bird" lined up?
  7:41am
dirty old man:

I didn't know kangaroos were marsupials.
  7:44am
Meghan:

Kangaroos and Koalas! How come it's animals from Australia?!
  7:45am
Meghan:

No I don't Annie.... sorry!!
  7:46am
Chuck:

As I understand it just about all Australian mammals are marsupials. Elwyn, yes or no?
  7:47am
Dave B:

@DOM/Megan

The Opossum is a marsupial too!

http://apusa.us/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Cross-Eyed-Opossum.jpg
  7:48am
Marmalade Kitty:

Meghan, Mr Songbird - The Kinks is a good one!
  7:49am
Chuck:

The Hank Snow and Anita Carter version of this song is the very best...
  7:49am
Dave B:

OH YEAH!

My FAVORITE Beatles song... ever.
  7:50am
karen:

So is the wombat!
  7:50am
Meghan:

Marmalade Kitty..... I had it in the line up and had to get rid of it due to time limits..... meh!
  7:50am
Chuck:

Opossum are also frequently road kill up here, Dave...
  7:51am
Dave B:

@Chuck - hopefully they're not what's for dinner!
  7:51am
doc (aussie) henry:

well, we do have non-marsupial mammals-- various rats, bats and of course the dingo but yeah mostly marsupials
  7:51am
karen:

That was Les Paul and MARY FORD
  7:53am
Chuck:

Nah, Dave. Car tires over tenderize...
  7:53am
Marmalade Kitty:

Koala bears are kooloala!
  7:53am
Elwyn:

@Chuck:
Ha ha! Not all animals are marsupials down here. We'lve got lizards and reptiles for example... One thing is consistent: they will all try to kill you.

Guess what I saw at the supermarket today? Kangaroo burgers!
  7:54am
Dave B:

@Doc/Elwyn - I think it has something to do with Australia breaking off from Pangaea eons ago.
  7:55am
Meghan:

I like Wombats. They are cute. Echidnas aren't marsupials right?
  7:55am
Chuck:

Very much so, Dave. There's a series on Animal Planet channel called "Mutant Plant" that goes into that...
  7:56am
Joe R:

mass awareness of a certain avian variety...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WNrx2jq184&feature=related
Sorry that I didn't hear the first couple hours. But I thank the WFMU Gods for archiving.
  7:56am
Chuck:

Oops, That's "Mutant Planet"...
  7:57am
Dave B:

Echidna's Arf!
(their a wierd little bird)

@Chuck - speaking of road kill, why does this not surprise me?

http://www.pccocwv.com/festival.htm
  7:57am
Meghan:

Morning Joe! Better late than never!
  7:58am
Parq:

Strictly speaking, a ladybird is an insect. I forget -- has Miss Meg done a bug show?
  7:59am
Meghan:

I think this bird is of the female variety.... and no, I have not done an insect show..... yet!
  7:59am
Chuck:

I asked that myself some months ago, Parq. Beginning of June maybe, Meghan?
  7:59am
doc (aussie) henry:

as far as I know...echidnas are indeed marsupials... and wombats are nasty bitey little creatures...
  7:59am
Dave B:

also a former first lady...
  8:00am
Dave B:

oh yeah, i was thinking kiwi.

sorry doc
  8:01am
Chuck:

That festival is a rather disgusting concept, DB!
  8:02am
Meghan:

That seems like a good time for it Chuck!

That is what I heard Doc.... though they look really cute and snuggly. At least when I saw one in Sydney. (outside more like).
  8:03am
Elwyn:

I can really dig koalas. All they do is sleep, eat and reproduce. They have a reputation for being one of the laziest animals - not even getting out of their tree if there's a bushfire.
I can't remember if eucalyptus leaves have some sort of narcotic effect on them or not but I picture them as stoner animals.
  8:03am
caver_mike:

Just a minor quibble - a ladybird is not a bird, it is a beetle. Usually called a 'ladybug' in the US.

ladybird [ˈleɪdɪˌbɜːd]
n
(Life Sciences & Allied Applications / Animals) any of various small brightly coloured beetles of the family Coccinellidae, such as Adalia bipunctata (two-spotted ladybird), which has red elytra marked with black spots Usual US and Canadian name ladybug
[named after Our Lady, the Virgin Mary]

  8:04am
other dave in ireland:

caver_mike, you miss a subtle point - "bird" forms part of its name
  8:05am
Chuck:

I thought so, Meg! That's when the Japanese Beetles swarm up here. Japanese Beatles! That would be The Neat Beats....
  8:05am
Elwyn:

Ladybirds are also not lady-like!
  8:06am
doc henry:

as we say down here... a koala eats roots and leaves :-)
  8:06am
caver_mike:

Yes, I get it. I said it was a minor quibble. But I realize this is the perfect opportunity to yell "FREE BIRD!!!!!!!!!!!"
  8:07am
Parq:

So, has there been a bug theme? And if not, let's get to work. There's already a whole Greasy Kid Stuff marathon premium full of bug songs.
  8:07am
other dave in ireland:

nooooooooooooooooo
  8:09am
Marmalade Kitty:

Aw, The Holy Modal Rounders - If you want to be a bird!

The birdie song - The tweets.. lol!!
  8:09am
Parq:

Eels aren't birds either. Oh wait ...
  8:11am
Meghan:

it's in the works Parq! And I have that premium from greasy kids stuff too!
  8:11am
Chuck:

Gonna do Juliana Hatfield, Meg?
  8:12am
Elwyn:

I'm still struggling to come to terms with the allegation that Hatfield used to be in a Rush covers band...
  8:13am
Chuck:

What?! I can't see that happening, Elwyn!
  8:14am
jeff p:

"Visualizing herself as a singer since her high school years, Hatfield sang in school choirs and briefly played in a cover band called The Squids, which played Rush songs.[3]"
  8:14am
Jim Devoid:

Any chance of playing Leatherface 'Eagle'?
  8:15am
Elwyn:

@Chuck: It's Jeff P's claim.

I can't stop listening to "On Fire". When am I getting my Dean and Britta CD? :-)
  8:15am
jeff p:

It would have been better if she could have played 2112 on harp but you can't have everything.
  8:17am
Meghan:

Elwyn, yours must be waiting on some other premiums. Some naughty DJ's didn't finish their premiums on time.....

Awww, sorry Jim! You going to Chris' birthday shindig Friday?
  8:17am
jamief:

meghan there has to be a Neil Young solng in here somewhere....you know it makes sense :)
  8:18am
Meghan:

Jamief, there was..... but had to be cut due to time restraints! I really need me a 4 hour long show!
  8:18am
Elwyn:

I've got a feeling Frangry is super-busy doing all the work on the Shut Up Weirdo calendar.
  8:19am
Chuck:

Got my pledge stuff last week, Elwyn! Speaking of which, are you responsible for me getting a Sharon Jones CD with that, Dave? If so, THANK YOU!!!
  8:19am
Marmalade Kitty:

this pixies song gives me the shivers in a goood way :)
underrated pixies album
  8:20am
Dave B:

That was me Chuck.

Enjoy!
  8:20am
Meghan:

That was Dave, Chuck. He told me to switch it to you!
  8:20am
Chuck:

She is soooo freakin' AWESOME!
  8:21am
Jim Devoid:

Megan - I've been outta the loop with Chris... what's the deal?
  8:22am
jamief:

forgiveable meghan....Mother Earth from Ragged Glory, next week, perhaps :)
  8:22am
Meghan:

It's his 40th birthday. saw him last Saturday, but it had been a while!
  8:26am
Chuck:

Taking some XTC is always a good thing!
  8:26am
Jim Devoid:

4-----0!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow...I remember being 40...like 5 years ago or something.....I'll have to buzz him!
  8:27am
Meghan:

ha! good thing I told ya!
  8:27am
Chuck:

Only 40? Just a puppy still....
  8:28am
Elwyn:

There are so many Neil Young "earth" and "world" songs...
  8:30am
Jim Devoid:

40 is the new 27. Our countries low birthrate plus our general congressional pettiness proves it!
  8:34am
jamief:

agreed Elwyn....so Maghan has no excuses next week...it's gotta be said, the last couple of hours music is some of the best radio I 've experienced in a long time....here in the UK you tend to get the usual top 40 playlist rubbish....this station is a godsend!
  8:35am
Meghan:

*blushing* hooray for WFMU!
  8:36am
Karen:

Hooray for Meghan!
  8:37am
Brian in UK:

jaimef have you pledged?
  8:39am
Chuck:

How could anyone NOT play this song! WooHoo!!!
  8:40am
jamief:

no...but certainly will....apart from 6music there just isn't anything worthwhile!!
  8:40am
Elwyn:

Trompe is underrated. Thematically, it is more nerdy and kookier:
eg aliens searching for music (Planet of Sound), reincarnation (Letter to Memphis) etc.
  8:41am
Brian in UK:

Thats the truth brother, this is what John Peel was striving to achieve and ofcourse did so.
  8:41am
Chuck:

In keeping with the bird theme I've been lucky enough to have one of these blokes around the area this spring!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pileated_Woodpecker

Cool looking bird!
  8:42am
jamief:

ahhhh Brian, Peelie is much missed...another one taken too early.
  8:42am
Hugh:

There once was an 'FMU dj, named Klaus, who used the "Coukoo Waltz" as his intro.
  8:43am
Meghan:

It's funny to hear there is bad radio in the UK since there is such great music/bands from there.....
  8:44am
Parq:

Well, Miss Meg,we have even more great bands in the US, and look at the state of radio here.
  8:44am
jeff p:

LOL! *WHAT!* halelujia! woa-woa-woa-woa!
  8:45am
Chuck:

Anytime a corporation is in charge of radio it's BAD, Meg! Certainly, we all know this...
  8:45am
jamief:

bland MOR is where the audiences appear to be here Meghan...the main BBC station Radio 1 has a few decent shows...and BBC 6 music is excellent...apart from that..Zilch!
  8:46am
Meghan:

true. it's a shame how radio has gotten so corporate. It's sad that even classic rock stations play the same old stuff over and over. You'd think they would open up those albums past the same tracks over and over.
  8:46am
Dave B:

@Chuck - tell me about it. I work for one....
  8:47am
jeff p:

The vast majority of people don't want to hear anything other than anything they've heard before they turned 25
  8:47am
Chuck:

Eww! I had no idea, Dave! How do you stand it?!
  8:47am
Parq:

Chuck, I was just about to say, the government runs the radio in the UK and big corporations in the US, but it comes down to the same thing -- The Man giving the masses whatever will keep them mollified.
  8:48am
Meghan:

Hey Philly- what are you doing tomorrow night? Not sure, why not check out our very own Jeff P! His band Sudden Ensemble is playing! here's the details- http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/event.php?eid=114331608648859
  8:49am
Parq:

By the way, this Time track is killer. It was my favorite moment in that Prince movie.
  8:49am
Brian in UK:

The BBC is fantastic in the breadth of its programming from classical, spoken word, humour, news coverage etc. It is very difficult to compare WFMU to anything in any other country in the world. Some attempt this extraordinry feat but none reach the heights that FMU does.
  8:49am
jeff p:

Damn! a shout-out! Thank you, Meghan!
  8:49am
Chuck:

I understood that a long time ago, Parq. I always felt that the corporate idea was to basically brain wash you into buying what they were selling by drilling it into you!
  8:49am
Dave B:

@Jeff P and Meghan - for next week, how about Canadian band "I Mother Earth"?

You'll never guess who sat in on the song "Like A Girl"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Mother_Earth
  8:50am
Meghan:

of course Jeff!

And yes Parq, the glories of Purple Rain!
  8:50am
other dave in ireland:

I think those repetitious stations will die a death in the not to distant future and it'll be the creative and unpredictable stations like this, that survive (I live in hope)

I don't listen to any stations here, basically it's WFMU/Some BBC stations & sometimes other assorted US listener supported stations
  8:50am
doc henry:

Meghan, you're running out of time to play "Little Bird of Heaven" by the Reeltime Travelers
  8:51am
Elwyn:

Definitely agree with that statement about Classic Rock stations. In Australia, Triple M is awful.
The only time they play new material is when it's mainstream "alternative" like Foo Fighters and Kings of Leon. It's no wonder ratings are dying.
Personally, I think they need to do more for the bands. eg play new tracks from classic rock bands eg play that new Van Halen track, play stuff from that new Neil Young album...
  8:52am
Chuck:

Thank goodness for WVKR (in my area) and WFMU! I will NOT be brain washed into liking what THEY want me too!
  8:52am
Dave B:

Jeff P - email me the deets... Only a few more days of FB sabbatical.

And Meghan - THANKS FOR PLAYING ELBOW!
  8:53am
other dave in ireland:

*wonders will Meghan finish the show with Bill Callahan's - Too many birds*
  8:53am
Chuck:

"They" being the corporate run stations...
  8:53am
jeff p:

@ Dave B: Nice catch on I Mother Earth!

http://www.dangerdangergallery.com/calendar.html
  8:54am
jamief:

other Dave in Ireland....the new Bill album is ace!
  8:55am
Elwyn:

F#@king corporations... well just the evil ones, especially the ones that don't pay enough taxes.

http://front.moveon.org/d-which-corporations-are-the-biggest-freeloaders/?rc=recirctest
  8:56am
other dave in ireland:

jamief - I haven't had a chance to pick it up yet, thanks for reminding me!
  8:56am
Brian in UK:

And folks lets take a trip down memory lane with this revived 45 from ...........

This is what you are missing folks. And now a word from our sponsors. Let it go. Its Pareto, 80% of the population only listen to 20% of the available music. If that.
  8:56am
Dave B:

@Jeff P - a road trip might be in my future. As for "I Mother Earth" Google Fu stance was "Rush Songs About Earth"
  8:56am
jeff p:

Oooo! We'll be in Ireland for your June 16 show!
  8:57am
other dave in ireland:

jeff details!
  8:57am
Cheri Pi:

Darn, I just now thought of the Rufus Thomas:Do the Funky Penguin"
  8:57am
Parq:

Miss Meg, this has been an exceptional show, but I gotta go to work. Peace out. Next week on earth.
  8:57am
Brian in UK:

Top job, Meghan
  8:58am
other dave in ireland:

Meghan thanks, this was the perfect show - really loved this - and a pleasure talking to you all here too.
  8:59am
jeff p:

other dave: wedding in Gallway the previous weekend, flying out of Dublin on Friday so Thurs is free!
  8:59am
Elwyn:

Great show Meghan!

See you later, everyone!
  9:00am
Marmalade Kitty:
