Listener comments!

  12:05pm
Joe:

Hello all
  12:06pm
Carmichael:

Present.
  12:07pm
Handsome Harry:

Startin' it off with a good 'un.
  12:08pm
Josh RVA:

First time back on the factory farm in too long
  12:11pm
yair yona (tel aviv, Earth):

yea. we're all here.
  12:15pm
kamikaze:

I'll be spotlighting the music Martin Rushent produced for the better part of today's show, starting at 12:30!
  12:17pm
Steve metz:

Looking forward to some great tunes. Martin was a great producer and a big influence on me as a producer and musician.
  12:21pm
Joe:

Dammit I walk away from my desk for just a few minutes and you play VoiVod
  12:24pm
Joe:

I honestly didn't even know about Martin's passing. I was just reading Human Leagues Wiki entry yesterday
  12:35pm
Droll:

I listened to this T-Rex CD just last week and I assure you the LP over FM sounds a zillion times better than the hi-fi version.
  12:50pm
Steve metz:

Yea Rezillos
  12:51pm
Cheri Pi:

Love the Rezillos!
  12:54pm
Mark Watkins:

Great tribute Diane/WFMU. Mark (Reading, UK)
  12:57pm
jljl:

It's the best of late 70's UK punk.
  12:58pm
Joe:

Wonderful set
  12:58pm
Cecile:

he always had a great sound - raw, but not out of control.
  12:58pm
Cheri Pi:

These bands were the soundtrack to my teen years.
  12:59pm
Cecile:

kept the essence of the band
  12:59pm
andymorphic:

second that....great tribute....i don't want to go to lunch
  1:02pm
kwhitehead:

what Cheri Pi said.

Ah, nostalgia.
  1:03pm
Carmichael:

I love whistley guitar leads!
  1:04pm
andymorphic:

this is precisely why i love diane and wfmu. putting all this music into perspective like this. really caring. i LOVE IT!
  1:06pm
Cecile:

1978 was one of the great recording years, I think.
  1:13pm
andymorphic:

everything i love musically was born in this era
  1:15pm
Carmichael:

Oh man, Ian Gomm!
  1:15pm
Cecile:

It was an important year.
And a great single from Ian Gomm...
  1:17pm
Carmichael:

The sax nails down the timeline.
  1:18pm
Cecile:

Oh, yeah. The "bad sax" era.
  1:21pm
andymorphic:

the dr who sound track of this era are amazing
  1:21pm
Jeff D:

Trouser Press had an article back in the day on the Class of 77. What a class...
  1:30pm
Cheri Pi:

OH mah gawd-I haven't heard this Member' song in decades!!!
  1:32pm
Cecile:

me either, Cheri. That was a big favorite on Radios in Motion in Detroit in the early 80s.
  1:32pm
Cecile:

this horn section also dates the track.
  1:32pm
Cecile:

Not the horn section, the arrangement...
  1:33pm
Cheri Pi:

The Haircut 100 Horn section... that I love so much.
  1:34pm
Cecile:

Oh, yeah. That kind of brittle Afro-jazz feel. I certainly enjoyed it and still enjoy it. but that says 1980-82 like nothing else...
  1:36pm
Droll:

Hazel O'Connor has more than a touch of Russel Mael in her voice.
  1:40pm
Cecile:

the first NME I ever was able to buy had Altered Images as their cover story after they'd won their NME Best New Band award.
  1:44pm
postmanpaul:

A Treat to hear Claire Grogan again, Diane. Your playlist reminding me of a wonderful John Peel show.
  1:49pm
king penguin:

is there a radio edit of Peaches. It's sort of a standard, where they playing something naughty (other than the theme) all this time?>
  1:50pm
Cheri Pi:

What is naughty about the Peaches song? I've heard it a thousand times.. is it an English vernacular?
  1:50pm
Cecile:

Pete Shelley was the first "new wave" show I ever saw at St. Andrew's Hall. He played guitar along for a tape maching and played Homosapien twice.
  1:51pm
Cecile:

he didn't have a lot of solo material, and refused to play Buzzcocks songs.
  1:51pm
Cecile:

homosapien is still a great song, though
  1:52pm
Cheri Pi:

Poor Pete Shelley! lolz...
  1:52pm
glenn:

to this day, magazine is still the loudest show i ever saw. also possibly the best.
  1:52pm
kamikaze:

Peaches is too suggestive. The FCC is funniest about the sex stuff, unfortunately. When Hugh was here in October, he offered to play it, and I had to decline. Our copy here at the station says DO NOT PLAY all over it! :(
  1:53pm
glenn:

even though john mcgeoch had been replaced by robin simon. still great.
  1:54pm
king penguin:

That's what im asking, why it cant be played. But i always thought, perhaps, incorrectly, that "peaches" was reference a little more specific than jjust pretty girls.
  1:55pm
Cecile:

It's not the peaches - it's the whole less than implied oral sex stuff.
  1:55pm
Cecile:

I've heard worse on the top forty, for sure.
  1:55pm
glenn:

ya think?
  1:56pm
Steve Metz:

Saw the Yachts back in the day great live band.
  1:56pm
Cecile:

For sure! Baby Got Back, for one.
  1:56pm
Cheri Pi:

I thought there was a thickly accented curse word in there-had no idea that suggestivity was so strict.
  1:56pm
dc pat:

ho jeeze that's ridiculous. You're right Cecile, my daughter listens to an awful radio station here in dc and it's WAY worse than most of the stuff in my collection
  1:56pm
king penguin:

Wow. "Suggestive"? That would encompass everything.
I was a big Stranglers fan until i saw them. Keyboard driven bands dont work live for me.
  1:57pm
glenn:

that hugh cornwell show was excellent. i've listened to the archive of it a few times.
  1:57pm
Cecile:

I think they freaked out back in the 70s, and it's still a carryover...

Hell, tonight's the night is as bad. I always said that popular bands got away with a lot more than underground band.
  1:58pm
Cheri Pi:

They barely bleep out the Eff word on my bad Clear Channel Metal in the car station...
  1:58pm
Cecile:

anyway, later taters. Gotta grab some food.

*homer simpson voice* stupid FCC.
  1:58pm
glenn:

rod stewart's tonight's the night or neil young's tonight's the night?
  1:59pm
Cheri Pi:

laters!
  1:59pm
dc pat:

my daughter asked me the other day "What's S&M?" and she's been listening to VU for years...
  2:00pm
king penguin:

i was once getting my hair cut and they had on some mainstream disco type station. Homo Sapien came on. Loud andd rocking. Best haircut of the decade.
  2:00pm
kamikaze:

Thing is, the minimum FCC fine nowadays is $500,000. That would break WFMU. Other stations will play things and take their chances and take the fine. None of it is automatic, it's by chance, just here not worth the risk
  2:02pm
glenn:

john wing - "my daughter asked me what oral sex was, and i had to say - i'm not sure, ask your mother."
  2:03pm
Steve Metz:

I remember buying everyone of these records when they came out. Still have em. Martin was a busy guy.
  2:04pm
Cheri Pi:

Hi Steve!
  2:04pm
paula:

seconds...diane, thank you.
  2:04pm
Steve Metz:

Hey
  2:05pm
Cheri Pi:

I can't believe how big a Human League fan I am after all these years...
  2:06pm
Doodle:

FMA is broken : /
  2:09pm
Steve Metz:

Hey Glen I would agree with you on Magazine being one of the best shows ever. Right up there with The Cramps and Robert Fripp Frippertronics.
  2:10pm
kamikaze:

I'm not having any issues with the FMA.... try it again ?
  2:11pm
Cheri Pi:

Magazine are getting back together, is that right?
  2:12pm
Stevel:

Wow. What an imprint left by Mr.Rushent. Great show.
  2:12pm
Steve Metz:

Yes They did a tour recently.
  2:14pm
Chris from DC:

Magazine. Realy? Whoa.
  2:16pm
Cheri Pi:

I must see Howard Devoto in person once before I die.
  2:17pm
slugluv1313:

awesome show/tribute to Mr. Martin Rushent, Diane -- THANK YOU!!!!
  2:18pm
king penguin:

i agree. Lovely..
  2:18pm
northguineahills:

I love the Altered Images vocalist's Scottish accent (Glaswegian?).
  2:18pm
Merry:

Hi I'm listening from California. Is Sun Araw going to play live in studio? Love your show!
  2:22pm
Upcoming at WFMU:

Merry, the Sun Araw session is Thursday morning on Jason Sigal's show between 9am and noon east coast time.
  2:26pm
Jennique:

I just finished watching the BBC documentary series SYNTH BRITANNIA on youtube and fell in love with Phil Oakey and Human League all over again. Sad to hear about Martin Rushent. Thanks for playing HL. I would have loved to have seen them with Klaus Nomi and Joan Jett! Lucky you!
  2:27pm
Merry:

Thank you for the info!! The guitarist/beat guy is my son.
  2:33pm
jeremy:

i loved belinda carlisle when i was a kid. heaven on earth cassette played endlessly
  2:38pm
Steve Metz:

What I love about Martins productions is that every instrument has it's space. The early 70's was the day of the muddy mixdown and poor mastering. martin solved it
  2:40pm
Joe:

Not one to pay attention to producers until later in life. Never realized how much he had his fingers dipped in. It explains a lot of sub conscious association in my mind though.
  2:42pm
slugluv1313:

HOMICIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! gotta turn the volume ALLLLLLLL the way up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS AGAIN, DIANE!!!!!!!!! and THANK YOU, MR. MARTIN RUSHENT FOR ALL THIS AMAZING MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  2:46pm
Steve Metz:

Black and White I so love this record
  2:50pm
kamikaze:

B/W is my fave Stranglers disc!
  2:51pm
Jennique:

Love this song - DONT YOU WANT ME! Love that it is quoted on the Young Ones frequently in jest as well.
  2:52pm
bill:

Remember sitting and watching MTV for hours and hours waiting for something good to come on?
  2:53pm
dc pat:

..and then all you'd get for your troubles was Psych Furs, X, and just MAYBE Devo...
  2:53pm
schizflow:

i don't get the joke here. is there a joke?
  2:54pm
dc pat:

BUZZCOCKS!
  2:56pm
Jennique:

Oh boy, haven't listened to the Buzzcocks in a while. Saw them when they played Knitting Factory a while back and was screaming this song. Yay Pete Shelley!
  2:56pm
bill:

I kept hoping for a PIL. Never happened of course.
  2:56pm
efd:

Great show. Diane! You can just leave all these records in a corner somewhere so I can easily find them tomorrow night! :)
  2:56pm
paula:
