Listener comments!

  12:16am
Nigel Tufnel:

This one goes to 11! Sex Farm Woman! Sniff the glove!
  12:30am
(mta) Tony:

Good morning, Joe.
I think it's very interesting that at this very moment I have finished restoring the Frankie Valli album, "Chameleon," to CDR. I just ejected it from the CD player after listening to it to ensure it plays and sounds perfect. All artwork is done, so I'll be applying the label to the disc right now! It took 30 hours to get the pops, clicks, and ticks out, but it was worth it because it sounds great!
  12:33am
Joe McG:

30 hours! I hope you're joking, Tony.
  12:36am
G:

I've hung out in music trading circles for many years. People often spend many, many hours fixing various issues and "remastering" so they can then distribute the best version of a show or recording...
  12:37am
Joe McG:

God bless 'em! Seems like so much work to me! But then, this program is called Surface Noise.
  12:40am
G:

Some people are even really anal about eliminating that little click between tracks that sometimes shows up when live shows are burned to CD. They will argue up one side and down the other about whether you can hear it or not, and some people won't accept a version of a recorded show where they think there is a faint click at track transitions. Seriously.
  12:42am
(mta) Tony:

Yes Joe, G is correct. As a general rule of thumb, it takes one hour for every minute of music. This album is indeed 33 minutes long, and that coincides perfectly with the general rule regarding remastering. I've remastered many, many albums, so I'm a pro at it, and it can't be done faster while maintaining the same degree of perfection. I can use the computer to automate the procedure, but I do it manually to reduce distortion on segments that don't need filtering. A computer can't tell what's good "noise" from bad noise. A manual job is the only way to get the BEST results. And again, G is right, I have eliminated EVERY single extraneous sound there is. It takes time, but I love music so I don't mind...
  12:42am
Joe B:

One of those two Troggs songs made up their entire set at the record fair one year!
  12:47am
Joe McG:

Hey, Joe, thanks for reminding me about that!
  1:05am
G:

Mamie seems to have a lot of complaints about his technique.
  1:06am
Joe McG:

Guess he needs to work on his stroke.
  1:06am
G:

Yep.
  1:06am
Joe McG:

Heh heh.
  1:09am
(mta) Tony:

Yes Joe, it's funny that although your show is called "Surface Noise," I've spent many thousands of hours removing "noise" from LPs that are unavailable on CD. The noise wasn't put there on the record by the artist(s). It's an inherent deficiency in the media that causes the distortions and weren't intended to be part of the songs. The "surface noise" was something that we all had to endure because we had little choice otherwise. Most have grown accustomed to it, but I always hated it, to the point that I rarely ever bought an album. The result of THAT fact is now I have well over 10,000 factory pressed (official) CDs in my library. There's no excuse anymore to NOT invest in the music!
  1:10am
Joe McG:

Wow, Tony, that's some impressive library!
  1:21am
(mta) Tony:

Yep, and you won't find a single pop, click, or tick, anywhere.
If I remember correctly, you originally were playing 78 r.p.m. records which derived your show name. Though the playing of 78s never fully materialized into the future, you kept the show title nevertheless, am I right?
  1:25am
Joe McG:

That's right, Tony. I haven't done a 78 set in a while, I should do one soon.
  1:28am
G:

Two mono tracks in a row would be "mono a mono".
  1:32am
Joe McG:

Hee hee.
  1:36am
Fleep:

More tambourine!
  1:37am
Joe McG:

Hey, fleep! Eh Eh!
  1:37am
G:

CD crackling can be either due to cheap crappy media (discs), high burn speed when the disc was created, older playback equipment, more delicate playback equipment, etc. To sort out what the issue is, you need to experiment by trying different things, and see what that tells you...
  1:39am
Fleep:

Debbie Harry's ability to miss every single note in that who gives a hoot voice is singular, evening Joe
  1:40am
G:

Blondes don't need to hit notes, maybe that's it???
  1:42am
Joe McG:

Not if the blonde is Debbie Harry, as far as I'm concerned!
  1:43am
12539:

I keep expecting that guy's 'echo' voice to break into "Hey St Peter," or "Walking in the Rain."
  1:43am
G:

DINGDINGDINGDING
  1:43am
(mta) Tony:

Re: the noise of CDRs:
No, I'm sorry I don't know the exact reason, cause, or name of the phenomenon, but I HAVE learned how to stop it:
The first thing is you've got to get a $300 Plextor CD Writer IF you are going to use your computer to burn discs. If you don't have one of these pro CD burners in your computer, your CDRs will eventually die. When the discs come out after burning, they're so hot, you can hardly touch them. In other words, the data is REALLY burned into the media surface. Cheapo computer bay mounted DVD/CD burners are crap for CDs. The DVDs they make are more reliable than the CDs they make. Next, you must use high-grade blank media. Cheapo media will always eventually die. Mitsumi is probably the best. Finally, if you PRESS the CD label onto the surface of the disc, you will cause the surface to become distorted. I apply labels to all my burned discs, but I don't press them on against the playing surface. They are applied by holding the disc in the air by the outside edge. You cannot press the playing surface against anything. All these things will cause CDRs to eventually fail. My CDRs are guaranteed to last and last.
  1:47am
Fleep:

Prodigious typing, dude
  1:49am
(mta) Tony:

Thanks, Fleep.
Yes, I know how to type with my eyes closed at 50 wpm.
I type almost as fast as I think.
I went to school for it, dude...
  1:51am
Minnesota Jeff:

Holy balls, MTA Tony! You are dedicated. So there is no version of "Chameleon" on CD so you were forced to make your own from a Vinyl copy?
  1:51am
G:

Did Lyn know Mamie?
  1:52am
Fleep:

That fifth and sixth 'again' could lead to chafing
  1:53am
Astroglide:

I wasn't around yet in the 70s.
  1:54am
Minnesota Jeff:

Did that bottle of Astroglide just ... talk!
  1:55am
Astroglide:

I have many hidden talents. Be leeve it.
  1:59am
(mta) Tony:

That is correct, Jeff. That is what I do for my hobby; I restore vinyl albums that haven't been released on CD. I'm the best at it, and I don't mind saying so. I'm "anal" about my work and hobbies. I always do the best I can. That's how I was raised.
  2:19am
Fleep:

All covers, all close harmony duets.
  2:26am
mark:

Glad to say I still have my copy of the Rockpile bonus single too.
  2:27am
Joe McG:

I don't know if everyone knows that it came bundled with "Seconds of Pleasure" since you see so many of them around loose. But it did!
  2:34am
(mta) Tony:

Joe, your CDR is fully packaged and will be sent to you on Monday since the post office is closed on Sunday. Enjoix!
  2:39am
Joe McG:

Can't thank you enough, Tony. Far too much effort on your part, but I thank you for it! I'll be sure to air your CD-R on this very show so folks can hear how good it sounds.
  2:47am
(mta) Tony:

Wow, that'll be so cool, Joe! It's really my pleasure. I've been playing it continuously for the past 30 hours, so I know what I'm talking about when I say it's a good album. Weird that it didn't fare better, though. I've enclosed a few copies for others there at fmu.
  2:53am
12539:

Thanks for the great show, Joe.
  2:55am
Joe McG:

You bet, 12539. Thanks as always for joining me...
  2:58am
(mta) Tony:

Great last track!
