Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from July 5, 2011 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Milk Music  Live in the WFMU Studio   Favoriting Engineered by Ruaraidh Sanachan    Hailing from Olympia, Washington, Milk Music are a killer electric rock trio that conjure up the downstroke punk attack of Greg Ginn with the pop hooks and Bigmuff stylings of Greg Sage & the Wipers (who are clearly a spirit looming large over the Northwest USA these days). Liberal doses of early Dinosaur and Thin Lizzy floating around as well in this, the band's first ever radio session. No-nonsense, simple, buzzed-up American rock for your afternoon listening pleasure. Download the MP3s from this set via the Free Music Archive! Listener comments!

  3:03pm
Tom G:

hey hey hey
  3:04pm
Matt from Springfield:

Torlesse Super Group--nice lush heavy sound. I just finished listening to Dark Night of the Soul's archive, and this goes surprisingly well with that show.
  3:06pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

July 5 is just not a fun day any way you slice it. Hi Brian!
  3:07pm
Tom G:

July 5 is up there with January 2.
  3:09pm
herr noiser:

aaaaahahahaha
  3:10pm
#K:

Brian I shrunk your premium T shirt 3 times & it's still too big for me
  3:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

Glam rock and blues murder ballads, whipped together for your pleasure!
  3:12pm
Rodney:

It is the evil Buddy Holly!
  3:12pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE,Tom: July 5 is not so hot, but the actual 4th was even worse for me--3 days into a long weekend, I was just de-toxing and digesting the massive food and beverage and late nights. I hate long weekends like that, you're tapped out by the time the actual holiday rolls around!
  3:13pm
Tom G:

I was wearin the BT shirt and got a couple weird looks. I think people see the Ha Ha and wonder what is so funny.
  3:14pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

but ya had fun, Matt...didn't ya? at least on 7/2 and 7/3?
  3:14pm
Tom G:

I paced myself Matt, but man did I break into a sprint yesterday. Whew.
  3:15pm
holland oats:

3 hours of turner
  3:15pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

actually I partied hard on Friday night and was kaput the rest of the weekend
  3:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Rodney: Good way of thinking of it!
@#K: Wow, mine fit fine, but I'm XL--are you S and still couldn't get it down to size?

@Tom: The question marks make it difficult to "read" in your head--how does it "flow"? I can imagine people mouthing the words while looking at the shirt. "I don't get your statement to the world...why can't you be less ambiguous?"
  3:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

Tom's got the "marathon" attitude, which I sometimes have, but was sorely lacking this weekend. DCE even more sorely, it sounds like!
  3:17pm
BT:

Hey #K did you get a Small? Lemme know if you need smaller bt@wfmu.org
  3:21pm
#K:

I got a medium! I thought there were no smalls. This is Heather K by the way, I just picked it out myself I'm gonna feel really stupid if I missed a bin of smalls, hahaha
  3:22pm
Carmichael:

I got a Large, and it got tighter by the hour.
  3:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: And yes, I did have an awesome time on 7/2 and 7/3, enjoyed being a glutton and exploding stuff.
  3:24pm
Highway Sign:

For assistance, dial Heather77
  3:25pm
BT:

Heather, I think yr right -- med was the smallest! Ugh...Chick tees next time, I learned my lesson :( I thought Cheri Pi was the only female listener so I skimped for my first tee. Next time!
  3:30pm
#K:

hahaha no worries I bet more ladies will listen knowing that they can get a wicked cool tshirt next year

sup Highway Sign
  3:30pm
don:

best venom cover ever!
  3:30pm
Adam in Portland:

....been waiting to open this Pandora's box. Thanks, BT! Love it!
  3:31pm
Adam in Portland:

This needs to be pressed!
  3:32pm
Highway Sign:

'Sup, Heather! You're the only "hatch tag" we need! Then again, we're inanimate signs, so we aren't on Twitter...
  3:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

Indeed it's (at least one) kids doing Venom! I saw that headline on the blog this morning.
  3:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Adam!
Did you really meet Scharpling this weekend in Portland? Was it for the thing he was "soliciting" Portlanders for?
  3:36pm
#K:

even as an animated being I'm not on twitter so I guess...I guess I'm just a free-floating hash tag.
  3:49pm
Adam in Portland:

Matt: I did!!! Such a warm guy. If I engaged in tweeting I would have known he was here for a Wild Flag video shoot and got involved/loaned him my copy of Get in the Van. Ha! As it was I was walking the downtown streets with my friend Shalene while we sought out coffee before an Ivan Neville show. We saw a small group of people approaching us and as they passed I noticed a familiar looking character looking at me a bit sideways (at that moment it had long slipped my mind that I had thrown on my WFMU flag to wear for the day.) I, of course, had widened eyes as well, as I then realized I was sharing a moment in time with an as yet unmet familiar. Haha. He reached out his hand, introduced himself, complimented me on my choice of shirt, introduced my to the highly estimable Hatch and Puloma, and showed off some Wild Flag video props. I had many questions, but maintain a fairly unassuming demeanor around anyone but close friends, so I told them I was glad they were enjoying our fair city, and bade them continued great times as we parted, and Shalene and I made our coffee run before throwing ourselves into a weird pit of our AARP seniors at Ivan's Marriott Hotel ballroom (?????) show. Very, very pleasurable to make the acquaintance of some beloved WFMU principles.
  3:49pm
?:

Not to be confused w/ DJ Olive's group, We
  3:52pm
Adam in Portland:

Tom and I are separated by one degree in Chris Slusarenko. I hope he returns. It would be wonderful to ask for more Fredericks anecdotes and the like. I very much respect Mr. Scharpling's work ethic and style.
  3:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Adam: Sweet! That's one reason I want to try and catch the Hoof 'N Mouth live at some point, or the Record Fair or any FMU event in north NJ--you get to see all the greats of this station in person. (Or, "principals", I'm OCD like that!)
  3:59pm
Adam in Portland:

Yes, you should, and thank you! Hahaha. I usually have a better command of my spelling. My librarian grandmother is disowning me as I "right" this.
  4:00pm
Adam in Portland:

I should be called before the principals office any moment now.
  4:03pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

at least you won't be called on principles
  4:04pm
Adam in Portland:

p/s, Matt, ALWAYS great to continue our dialogue as well. :-)
  4:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

Illaiyaraaja -- I thought this mix was either Indian, or else Molvanian...

@Adam: Comment threads never die, they just continue on other playlists! :)
  4:08pm
BSI:

.....was so thrilled to find a NM vinyl copy of this Skidoo soundtrack. The film itself is so awesomely terrible....
  4:08pm
Adam in Portland:

@DCE: morels maybe.
  4:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

Re: Skidoo
Simon & Garfunkel singing Maurice Sendak's "Chicken Soup With Rice"??????
  4:16pm
BT:

Wow BSI if u ever digitize the sdtk love to swap something cool to grab that from ya.
  4:18pm
BSI:

Already done, boss. I'll be in touch, as they say in them movies where they talk like that........
  4:18pm
Marmalade Kitty:

Crazy show today! :)
  4:18pm
BT:

sweet! thank you! got yr LP today from Bellerue too.
  4:23pm
BSI:

double-sweet!
loving the show as always.....
  4:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi MarmaKit!
  4:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

Is it wrong that I keep thinking "Across The Universe" during this Les Rallizes Denudes track? :)
  4:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

Or Manorexia, actually...
  4:35pm
Tom G:

Hearin a bit of Tad in the Milk Music.
  4:39pm
Adam in Portland:

Tom G: I think you're on to something. Certainly in the chunky rhythm chords.
  4:49pm
Tom G:

Wonder what ever happened to Tad.
  4:50pm
Rodney:

Tad Doyle is in a band called Akimbo.
  4:52pm
Tom G:

Wonder no more thanks. Cool.
  4:55pm
Tom in Medellin Colombia:

These guys sound good, but do they realize they are on the radio. Can the singer talk in between songs, or is he a savant that can only verbalize music?
  4:55pm
Matt from Springfield:

Milk Music's "Fertile Ground"!! That's my riff, guys!
  4:55pm
BT:

its called verite....
  4:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Tom in Medellin: It's a recorded set "live in the studio", they probably didn't know whether the pause between songs was going to be broadcast or cut.
  4:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

Nice, "Flying On The Ground Is Wrong".
  4:59pm
Tom G:

This Neil disc is GREAT.
  5:00pm
Tom in Medellin, Colombia:

Thanks Matt. I understand what you mean. It's just that my heros, the Ramones, would be turning over in their graves.
  5:02pm
m:

wasn't crazy about this album, but i do like this song and "grey riders". neil is all our biological mothers.
  5:06pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks to Milk Music!

@TomMedellin: That's why live performances are always the best--the band just interacts with the audience without thinking of how it's going to be recorded.
  5:06pm
RKJ:

Really, I heard no resemblence to the Ramones except some downstroke guitar -- much more SST, Northwest type stuff.
  5:10pm
Tom in Medellin, Colombia:

Right, but style matters. Johnny Ramone ran a tight ship. There were no pauses, no breaks, ever in their performances. I didn't mean they sounded like the Ramones, I just meant it's a good idea to just play, but if somebodey has to tune up cause they only have one guitar, for god's sake vocalist, speak.
  5:14pm
Matt from Springfield:

Charlie McAlister!! I didn't know you were a fan, Brian!! It's always difficult to listen to an entire piece by him, but today I'm in the mood for it!
  5:15pm
BT:

My tight ship leaks a lot.
  5:18pm
Tom in Medellin, Colombia:

BT. No, it's a great show and they were a good sounding band. Maybe just a bit shy.
  5:20pm
BT:

That was editing issues on my end, don't blame em....we had a few tune-up moments. But isnt tuning up fascinating? You never really fully appreciate what bands do to sound good for you.
  5:21pm
Tom in Medellin, Colombia:

Understood.
  5:25pm
Stanley:

i didn't care much for sports but this makes me want to take 'em up
  5:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

Like this MMoB.

Another great show Brian. Thanks for bringing us The Summer of LIVE! G'night everyone!
