Listener comments!

  3:00pm
...:

Hi Irwin!
  3:02pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hold on Irwin, what frequency are you trying to telepath us on? The 91.1 signal is probably jamming that, and for the online listeners you need to consider the re-sample rate of our computers audio cards.
  3:06pm
still b/p:

Is it coincidence or coordination that leads to that message showing up on two different signs in two different photos from different people on two FMU playlists on the same day?
  3:06pm
Matt from Springfield:

Is it a drizzly, damp day up there in NJ? It is in the DC area, and I just love jazz for that kind of weather!
  3:08pm
Coincidence:

It's all about me.
  3:10pm
Coincidence:

It is a bit much, I'll admit.
  3:14pm
PMD:

Hi Irwin!
  3:15pm
irwin:

hello to most of you
  3:16pm
Calgon:

Take me away, Irwin.
  3:16pm
AnAnonymousParty:

Hello from the rest of us.
  3:17pm
Alex:

Hey Irwin! I was watching season 2 of the Found Footage Festival the other day and noticed your name in the credits.
  3:17pm
rst-awhile:

Maybe it's just funny-funny, b/p.
  3:19pm
PMD:

So, if we pay our pledge will you smash other things too?
  3:20pm
WFMU Legion of Morals:

Posting a SMASHED AMANDA CD???!! That's a snuff picture!! You are vulgar and immoral Irwin!!!
  3:21pm
glenn:

he still shouldn't be in the all star game.
  3:22pm
Matt from Springfield:

Professor Elemental again, splendid!
Though it's not splendid that he went to a steampunk festival, in NJ, yet still couldn't stop by.
  3:24pm
Moral:

I fought Irwin and Irwin won.
  3:25pm
Morel:

I make other mushrooms seethe with jealousy at my deliciousness.
  3:26pm
Truffle:

Pfft...
  3:27pm
Matt from Springfield:

Opium, tea and mushrooms! It's almost time for tea! Sorry Morel, I'm thinking of other 'shrooms.
  3:29pm
Morel:

I am the crumpet of fungi.
  3:34pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Octopus Woman, please catch me with your tentacles, you sexy cephalopod
  3:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

Dream Weaver-y song poem, hippyish and discoish and AM Pop-ish all at once.

Btw, I think the writer means Fort Bragg, CA, not NC (in case anyone is wondering, which they probably aren't...)
  3:35pm
Jacques C.:

Eight arms and hundreds of suckers! I could tell you stories!
  3:36pm
chris:

where do you *get* this stuff, Irwin. (un)Holy marine biology!
  3:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

Maybe that's why you need to start a Song-Poem company to preserve the art form, Irwin.

Listeners can contribute backing tracks and you and another female DJ can provide vocals, translating each request into song-poem, as well as translating literary classics into song-poem form!
  3:38pm
AnAnonymousParty:

And to think at one time I might have wanted to be under the sea in a Octopus's garden. Now, maybe, not so much.
  3:39pm
glenn:

"another" female d.j.?
  3:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

@AAP: It's summertime though, so I'd still like to shout, and swim about. Octopus or no.
  3:40pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

coincidentally, or perhaps by coordination, I was reading about "tentacle rape" as a fetish on the cracked.com website just minutes before Octopus Woman.
  3:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

@glenn: I meant "another DJ who is female"! I guess it's hard to say without sounding clunky. "Irwin and DJette" maybe?
  3:40pm
Coincidence:

Huh. Really?
  3:41pm
pierre:

Bonsoir Irwin and all
  3:42pm
still b/p:

That makes me clenchy. I wonder sometimes how people first arrive at awareness of their specialized inclinations.
  3:42pm
pierre:

listeners
  3:42pm
andymorphic:

sound like see wrote this listening to an old star trek
  3:43pm
glenn:

sometimes the grammar nazi in me reaches out and takes control while i'm commenting.
  3:43pm
Tous Listeners Extraordinaires:

Bonsoir Pierre!
  3:44pm
What's so clunky about:

"...you and a female DJ?"
  3:45pm
Matt from Springfield:

Bonsoir Pierre!

Been awhile since I heard Tim Friese-Greene, his tracks are quite good.
  3:46pm
Clunky:

I hate pronouns, you me he she and all you!
  3:46pm
Joe Bacon:

Irwin, I beg of you...please spare that innocent Amanda CD!!!!!!
  3:46pm
Pennsylvania Schoolteacher:

All "yinze".
  3:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

I know Pierre said he didn't get an Amanda CD, perhaps FMU could raise even more money by starting a bidding war between Pierre and that listener! One pays to destroy the CD, the other counteroffers to receive the CD!

Of course anyone can pledge on the website and order that CD for $75, so at a certain point the concept would be destroyed...
  3:49pm
7SD Lame Concept Staff:

@Matt: Thank you, that is a good idea! It falls apart even in the face of basic scrutiny!
  3:50pm
glenn:

which is why i can buy a brand new printer for 100$, or toner for my old one for........110$
  3:51pm
glenn:

and people wonder why our landfills are overflowing.
  3:52pm
AnAnonymousParty:

Toner is just ground-up carbon paper.
  3:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

Do Canadians really put the dollar sign AFTER the price number?! Christ, you're already in Europe!
  3:54pm
pierre:

(putting signs after things make sense to me)

Hi Matt good to see you on here !
  3:54pm
glenn:

ummmmm. i do. i don't know about others. i also put a little slash through my sevens.
  3:56pm
Axl Rose:

I once put seven through a little Slash.
  3:57pm
Marmalade kitty:

Great Happy mondays cover!
  3:57pm
Alf from Upstate:

Leave Amanda alone. She does a great show on Give the Drummer Radio.
  3:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

@glenn: Interesting. I slash my sevens, and do other things borrowed from Europe to avoid ambiguity (1/7, 2/z, etc). But we always put the dollar sign in front of prices in the US.
  3:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hey Pierre! Where do you write the Euro sign in prices? And did you write the Franc sign before or after the price?
  3:59pm
pierre:

always after my friend.
  4:01pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I put my friends before $ as well.
  4:02pm
AnAnonymousParty:

Hmm, I just got a company email saying the owners have 4 tickets for the U2 360 tour concert at Busch stadium on the 17th. Instead of a drawing, you have to sing your favorite U2 song before the assembled employees at lunch on Fri and the best judged performance wins the tickets.
  4:02pm
Matt from Springfield:

To be precise, Belize is a "constitutional monarchy" because Elizabeth is still the head of state. As a Dominion (like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc) it's still part of the British system. So although Elizabeth has the title "Queen of Belize", she's represented by a Governor-General who exercises her limited constitutional functions there.
  4:03pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

oh my, that sounds horrible, AAP!
  4:03pm
Marmalade kitty:

I always thought Shaun Ryder - Happy Mondays had penned that song..NO! :)
  4:03pm
jaycjay:

@DCE, very well done!
  4:05pm
jaycjay:

The important question, though, Matt: do they put the signs before or after the numbers in Belize?
  4:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: That's a good one. Don't we Yanks usually put $ after friends! :)

@Pierre: That's what I thought. In England they write the Pound sign before, and Americans also write it before. (Though Britons don't consider themselves part of "Europe"! I do, but I call it "the Continent" just to clarify which European culture.)
  4:05pm
Marmalade kitty:

Ink..
  4:06pm
AnAnonymousParty:

@DCE, I imagine it will.

hamburger / london:

printer ink v other liquids: http://boingboing.net/2009/12/30/graph-compares-price.html
  4:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

@JCJ: It appears Belizeans write $ before the amount:
http://www.centralbank.org.bz/products.asp?cat=36&hierarchy=0
  4:10pm
pierre:

@ DCE: :)
@ Matt: yeah i understand, a lot of things differs with england, a lot of great discussion and jokes come from those differences, i like it
  4:10pm
Fran:

I do know exactly why inkjet cartridges cost so much. But you already know that Irwin. And I'm not telling.
  4:12pm
Matt from Springfield:

Pierre, have you ever taken the "Chunnel" into England? That's something I'd like to do the next time I go to Europe.
  4:12pm
glenn:

does it start with C and end with apitalism?
  4:13pm
hamburger / london:

unicorn blood methinks
  4:13pm
pierre:

yeah i took it for a school trip (france>england schooltrip are classic european school stuff) it was fun knowing i was underwater, although its just a train. :)
  4:14pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

it might start with "planned" and end with "obsolesence"
  4:14pm
Matt from Springfield:

Jeez Irwin, now Fucked Up is totally mainstream - at least on this station - now that you play it! It's a short jump to being played over the scratchy PA system at Walgreen's now!
  4:14pm
curious:

@pierre, what's French for Chunnel?
  4:15pm
pierre:

Tunnel
(pronounced TU-NALE)
  4:17pm
curious:

merci.
  4:17pm
Carmichael:

Hi Irwin & the usual suspects.

@Matt: I heard Journey to the Center of Your Mind on the muzak at Rite Aid last night.
  4:17pm
still b/p:

Get your girl a nice bottle of Chunnel No. 5 this Christmas.
  4:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

But what's the French for "curious" then?
  4:18pm
pierre:

mais de rien, l'ami.
  4:19pm
pierre:

@ Matt : its "curieux"
(prounounced KU-REE-UHH)
  4:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carmichael: Ha ha, I've heard Cream songs a few times as a muzak instrumental! I wonder who selects which songs will be covered as muzak.
  4:19pm
Steve Martin:

The French have a different word for everything!
  4:20pm
pierre:

we even have a different name for french.
  4:22pm
Steve Martin:

ha ha, i love it!
  4:22pm
pierre:

this is a very nice song Irwin !
  4:22pm
Matt from Springfield:

Surprised how similar that word curieux is.

And yes Pierre, I know THAT word is "français".
It's what the "frahnce say"! Oooh, multilingual groaner pun...
  4:27pm
Mots d'Heures: Gousses, Rames:

Eh! dites-le, dites-le,
De quatre et méfie de le.
Haine de caoutchouc me Douvres de mou.
Le lit le dos que l'a fait de
Tous s'y sèchent à c'port
Et de digérant, ohé! Ouida, ce pou.
  4:27pm
glenn:

i kinda like neopolitan ice cream. must be a holdover from my kid-dom.
  4:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

I love this classic bed music, you should play this more often! And that "tropical" piece as well.
  4:29pm
pierre:

Neat Matt de Sringfield !

(another common mistake is when french order meat, in france we say "saignant" -for not very cooked meat- which is translated by "bloody" litteraly… which can lead to somebody ordering for a f***g steack)
  4:29pm
glenn:

amanda smash up in 5...4.....3....2....
  4:30pm
Carmichael:

Glenn, don't mess with the power child. She'll sing when she's damn good and ready.
  4:32pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

now for your next trick, can you smash, say, Michele Bachmann?
  4:33pm
glenn:

if only. who's dumber, bachmann or palin?
  4:34pm
Ike:

Are you guys baiting Irwin or what? Surely you know by now that Irwin is a big fan of Sarah Palin. Not sure how he feels about Bachmann.
  4:35pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

of course, Ike! Irwin-baiting is slightly less dangerous than bear-baiting, and since I don't have any bears in my hood...
  4:36pm
pierre:

This music is SUPERBE !
  4:40pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

like a communion wafer
  4:40pm
hamburger / london:

please abort!!!
  4:40pm
Clark Barr:

Oh the humanities!
  4:40pm
glenn:

it's all fun and games 'til somebody loses an eye.
  4:41pm
Handsome Harry:

That was beautiful.
  4:42pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

her spirit is finally free
  4:42pm
Brass Knuckles:

Finish it. Microwave it. Nuke Amanda.
  4:42pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I think Bachmann's head would sound about the same
  4:43pm
caver_mike:

I love Amanda!
  4:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

There you go Brian. You're satisfied, and we are satisfied that Amanda is still an exclusive, hip thing not mainstreamed! We need people like you to scoff at our tastes!

GOOOO IRWIN! I thought you would do something like this after smashing!
  4:43pm
pierre:

does that means that somebody messed with the power child ?
  4:44pm
Dale from North Dakota:

Never understood the Amanda thing, so I preferred the sound of the CD breaking to this, lol.
  4:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

Let's Get Plastered and Raid Circus World!

I think from listening that these really are profane thoughts recorded throughout a car trip, strung together and remixed with "Why Don't We Do It In The Road?" afterwards.
  4:44pm
dammamanda:

Can you please destroy all of your Amanda CDs, tracks, etc etc?
  4:45pm
hamburger / london:

what's not to understand?? WOOOOOOOOOOPWOOOPWOOPWOOOPWOOOOOP!
  4:45pm
pierre:

i'm in the "i love Amanda" team
  4:45pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

someone's being tickled
  4:45pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Dale: I'm open minded. And immature. So CD smashing, AND Amanda is an ideal afternoon for me!
  4:46pm
still b/p:

Somewhere, a few moments ago, a dark chill brushed the back of Amanda's neck, her eyes narrowed and her cold assassin senses were awakened.
  4:47pm
andymorphic:

here is where we log off every week

so long and thanks for all the fish
  4:47pm
irwin:

Where's Brian? Where's my thanks? I had to clean up 4,000 dangerous shards of Amanda CD without a hazmat suit.
  4:48pm
hopey:

Wow, I tuned in just in time for Amanda!
  4:48pm
hamburger / london:

amanda-haters have no empathy - you should've known!
  4:49pm
Andy in Berlin:

Kneel before cookie! Ur, I mean, great show today Irwin,
  4:49pm
slugluv1313:

oh how i LOVE AMANDA!!!!!! although yeah, you're right -- not sure if i could really *handle* having her around doing this 24/7 (UNLESS she was in a separate room)
  4:49pm
Dale from North Dakota:

@Matt - I think my lack of appreciation is because at the time of recording, I would have been the 11 year old neighbour asking her to "take a pill and mellow out".
  4:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Irwin: What I was saying earlier about telepathic frequencies? THIS is what you need. Commands from The Power Child are delivered right to my brain, in ecstasy! Try to think on Amanda's wavelength.
  4:50pm
Clark Barr:

Irwin, save those shards and offer them in the next WFMU fundraiser! $50 a shred should put WFMU on solid financial footing!
  4:53pm
Brian:

Oh Joy, oh rapture! Thank you Irwin!
  4:55pm
amandamnation:

kill her please!
  4:55pm

Amanda's parents must have the patience of Job.

Hey. "CKUT" looks like it's what used to be called "Radio McGill" generations ago.

Generations ago, before the Internet, before Amanda, but after cable carriage, I had a radio show there.
  5:14pm
autumn:

the AC is great. thanks.
  5:21pm
Pete in LA:

What did I miss?
  5:25pm
Mr. Lowry:

Can we hear the rock ensemble version of 'Midwifery'?
  5:25pm

It'll be on Glee in a few weeks.

Calypso \o/
  5:30pm
Carmichael:

I loves me some baritone sax.
  5:39pm
Laura L:

But, Irwin, it's pronounced midWIFFery, not midWHYvery.
  5:40pm
irwin:

LL: Yep, now I remember. I stand corrected.
  5:40pm
rrg:

I don't think "unidentifed song-poem artist" pronounced it that way, though.
  5:41pm
Carmichael:

Like "Giuffre".
  5:47pm
elwood:

irwin, was the guiffre taken from a "radio station only" recording called somethng like "jazz compositions of the 20th century" or some such? i donated that two album set to FMU some time ago and would like to think it's my platter you played.
  5:48pm
Laura L:

BTW, heard Dan Tullis & Joel Clark on 1010WINS during yesterday morning's 22 minutes of news (that's enough of that!) and it has by now become disorienting to hear it on a.m. radio in its pure commercial form.
  5:49pm
irwin:

elwood: no, from a Columbia CD reissue of two late 1950s LPs, title on playlist
  5:56pm

Get this guy together with Amanada!

was that a dwarf?
  5:57pm

Andy!??

Call for an Amanda mash up mix up Kenny G style now that it seems Amanda has lost steam here. I can hear her all day. maybe listeners can steam it up again with this.

Thanks Irwin!
