Listener comments!

  8:35am annie:

time flies!!! i saw your pic and noticed the time..
  8:36am Doug Schulkind:

Annie, your the best. Good morning to you!
  8:37am annie:

morning doug... happy to be back on track this week...
  8:53am Brian in UK:

Afternoon sir & annie, it's like riding a bike underwater, you never forget.
Trying to sell some things on Ebay at the same time. I know thats anathema to you, guess that's why I said it. Oh for Drummer cam!!
  8:55am Doug Schulkind:

Believe me, Brian, a camera would detract. I prefer you make your own mental images. Surely they must be more flattering than the original source material.
  8:56am listener james from westwood:

happy friday all, and welcome back to studio p-for-pittsburgh, doug!
  8:57am Doug Schulkind:

Studio P—I love it!
  8:59am listener james from westwood:

closest i ever got to a studio cam was being part of a videoconference. watching myself and others in the split-screen felt very 1984. plus i have a face for telegraphy.
  9:01am Brian in UK:

Well I hope it's better now you've put your trunks on.
  9:01am El Thatchmo:

Come on everybody and soak up the Vitamin D (oug)!
  9:02am Doug Schulkind:

This is a trunks-optional show. Did I forget to mention that?
  9:02am listener james from westwood:

makes for strong bones and happy ears!
  9:02am Chris in Durban:

welcome back Doug
  9:03am Brian in UK:

Vit D, isn't that yeast, what you take to keep the mozzies away. Science never was my strong subject.

I guessed as much 'bout the trunks but was scared to ask.
  9:03am Doug Schulkind:

So pleased to be back, Chris. And THANKS for that Letta Mbulu drop. So swoonful.
  9:04am listener james from westwood:

i went with a 1910-era bathing costume and a straw boater. all i need is the man-tacular handlebar mustache.
  9:15am still b/p:

I see our DJ in an intense toyi-toyi around the room, barefooted, wearing a backwards ball cap, boxers under a big open floppy Sun Ra robe, conducting most numbers with a long wooden spoon.
  9:21am annie:

Oh, Balm of Gilead!!
  9:22am still b/p:

Brother Claude sounded like Bill Clinton with several whiskeys or a snort of bath salts in 'im.
  9:22am Elephant:

What's all this about trunks optional?
  9:23am Doug Schulkind:

The Men From Mars: http://tinyurl.com/3c9n2hj
  9:26am Doug Schulkind:

Elephant: Some listeners are referring to a comment I made in an email I sent my mailing list just before the show started. Would you like to be on the mailing list? Send me an email (click on the little yellow envelope above).
  9:29am Paul Sheratt:

phew ... just got in to notice Brother Claude Ely has been telling it like is. Fyi, Ace Records have just re-printed that Satan Get Back album.
  9:30am Chris in Durban:

Do check out the Josh Sithole Doug
  9:38am Bob:

Doesn't Moniker have a show on Sunday evening?
  9:38am Doug Schulkind:

Oh Chris, I am all over that blessed Sithole!

  9:40am Brian in UK:

Hello brother Paul, are you cooking, like this show?
  9:42am Doug Schulkind:

Bob wins the blue-ribbon for Best Earliest Pun. Well done, Bob!
  9:43am jill:

Good morning, kids! Welcome back to your regularly scheduled programming, Drummer.
Annie - thanks for "The Illusionist" tip - incredible
  9:46am Doug Schulkind:

Hey Jill! The last track on my upcoming "soul" set is thanks to you. Everyone, please thanks Jill in advance. (Wow is that disc great!)
  9:48am annie:

yeah, it was pretty good.. glad i discovered it..

and, btw- i am not able to download the RAR files.. any suggestions?
  9:49am Brian in UK:

This set is like taking a knife and slicing thru everyday life & seeing what is inside. Bit like the crime novel is today.
  9:50am still b/p:

Thank you, Jill.
  9:50am listener james from westwood:

"the" robert mitchum?! holy crow!
  9:50am Doug Schulkind:

Annie, you can't download them, or is it that you can't open them once downloaded?

@LJfW
Yup, "that" Robert Mitchum.
  9:52am Brian in UK:

When do see calypso on Capitol?

Thanks Jill.
  9:53am annie:

aahh, they download but do not open.. sorry.. i try to open them in itunes and winamp.. no go..
  9:53am Listener Bill:

@annie if you can't unpack the rar files, google for unRarX for Mac or WinRar for Windows.
  9:54am Brian in UK:

TOUGH TIP, DUCKY.
  9:54am jill:

your welcome - i have no idea what y'all are talking about. Guess I have to stay tuned.
WinRAR has been working for me.
  9:56am Elias:

Doug saves the day. Makes waking up in a hotel in DuBois, PA much better.
  9:56am annie:

yay!!! thanks for the info!
  9:57am Doug Schulkind:

Annie, you need to use some utility to open the rar files. I use UnRarX, which is, I believe, for Macs only. But Jill's WinRAR works fine, too. Also Stuffit Expander should work. All of these items are freeware. Just Google and grab 'em/
  9:59am Doug Schulkind:

Brian in UK, I believe you just made the first music bed request I've ever received. Coming up, Sir!
  10:01am jk:

late bird checking in, the water doesn't look so cold in there
  10:03am Doug Schulkind:

Morning jk! Howdy Elias! Is DuBois named for W.E.B. DuBois, per chance?
  10:04am annie:

yup, downloaded winRAR... 40-day trial period.. might search further..
  10:05am Brian in UK:

More crackles.
  10:06am Doug Schulkind:

WinRar is not free? That's absurd. Try Stuffit Expander. Your machine may already have it on. It comes bundled on most machines.
  10:07am Merv:

WinRAR claims that trial period, but I think it only enforces it if you're using it to compress the files... I've had the trial version for many months and it's not giving me any problems...
  10:09am annie:

hhmmm. i'll do a search, then.. ok, thanks for that merv.. i'll experiment later.. working on tricky book-keeping right now.. but i have downloaded it, anyway
  10:09am Hugo:

Mai pen lai - I've heard that a number of times!
  10:09am jill:

Everytime i use WinRAR, it suggest that i purchase it. I just bypass it and continue anyway. And i sleep comfortably at night knowing that i do this...
  10:10am Brian in UK:

This is as good as the Portuguese comedian that Trouble had on the other day.
  10:10am annie:

haha, jill, i love the way you think!
  10:10am Hugo:

Sawasdee krap!
  10:14am Elias:

I'm renaming it thusly by changing the pronunciation from Dew-Boyce.
  10:15am Listener Bill:

If your conscious does bother you about WinRAR, 7-Zip claims to unpack RAR files and its free.
  10:16am Doug Schulkind:

Can I just say...

The size of the audience listening right now to this show on the stream equals about 72% of the audience listening online to WFMU. That is just astonishing!!
  10:17am annie:

writing that down, too..i'm excited about acquiring that great texas swing in the last newsletter
wow, doug, great news!
  10:17am seang:

great show man!
  10:18am listener james from westwood:

rockin'. the more the merrier. bring a friend! lotsa room in the pool!
  10:18am Amanda:

Hurray for stream power!!!
  10:18am listener james from westwood:

annie, i'm looking fwd to snacking on that texas swing myself. thanks for including those, doug!
  10:19am Listener Bill:

I wonder if anyone is listening to this show and the live stream at the same time. What a mashup.
  10:20am monica:

morning, doug! feel like i'm racking up a ton of frequent flier miles whenever i hear your show. loving it!
  10:21am Doug Schulkind:

Hi Monica! You were referenced earlier in the comments. Scroll back for a chuckle.
  10:28am Doug Schulkind:

Hi seang!

Double Hi, Ms. Scenario!
  10:29am Paul Sheratt:

Brian,
Cooking but not cooking with gas - there are men from National Grid ( Gas ) investigating my lack of pressure (or is it volume ?) Unfortunately they haven't even as yet located their own mains pipe in the road and they've been here all day ...

Timeless stuff.
  10:31am Bob:

Monica: just for a little context, Doug had just said that he wanted to see some new monikers in the discussion.
  10:33am Bob:

I've been unzipping RAR files with 7zip for a few years now. It's free and open source.
  10:36am Doug Schulkind:

Bob,
I know I said this show was "trunks-optional," but please keep your unzipping to yourself.
  10:37am Hugo:

Thai pronunciation: The problem is not that you say something meaningless. It's that you say something entirely different from what you intended. A Thai phrase can have five different meanings, depending on the tone.
A typical Thai compliment: You speak bad Thai very good!
  10:39am Doug Schulkind:

Thai is like a Chinese dialect, then, with the various rising and falling inflections changing the meaning?
  10:43am Brian in UK:

Australians tend to end sentences on a rising inflection. Not sure what that means only that there might be unsure of what they are saying or are questioning.

Paul sorry to hear 'bout your gas. Oouh errr missus. Did you go to WOMAD?
  10:44am Hugo:

Mandarin has four tones, as far as I know, Hokkien or Cantonese more.

In Thai, high, middle, low, rising and falling. Vietnamese is also tonal, though they use our script. Malay and Tagalog (Philippines) both non-tonal. Japanese also non-tonal, but with their own script, which bears resemblances to Chinese script.
  10:48am ndbob:

Heya Doug and everyone - here for a few.
  10:49am Doug Schulkind:

Always a pleasure, ndbob.
  10:50am Hugo:

Hokkien has 7 - 9 tones, depending on the dialect. Most Chinese in Southeast Asia speak Hokkien which explains why Singapore has encouraged its citizens to learn Mandarin.
  10:50am Paul Sheratt:

Brian,
Went to WOMAD and found it a bit flat this year. Axel Krygier was worth the admission, mind you !
  10:53am Brian in UK:

Got Voix Bulgares lined up and don't tell the drummer, Aaron Neville.
  10:53am ndbob:

I see that you played "I Shall Wear a Crown" - my candidate for the first rock song out of thousands of possible choices
  11:00am monica:

@bob - thanks for that! doug, loved that joe lee wilson.
  11:15am Doug Schulkind:

Did I greet you properly, Mr. Sherratt? I think not. Brother Paul, your presence is most welcome!
  11:17am don:

friday wasn't the same without ya doug. glad to have you back.
  11:17am ndbob:

good one here - never knew that Sanford recorded for LHI, though that makes a lot of sense.
  11:20am Doug Schulkind:

And I wasn't the same without "Friday," Don. Seriously.
  11:22am david:

I really need to get some Loretta Lynn. this great.
  11:29am annie:

i think mostly of the great visual of john cleese dancing in "fish called wanda" whenever i hear russian..
  11:29am Doug Schulkind:

David, I'm not sure if the link is still good, but check this out:

http://tinyurl.com/25kwb9f

Lotta Loretta!
  11:33am annie:

wow, doug, i'll never leave my room again!!! what a treasure!
  11:34am Hugo:

Rembetika! Was this the one on Trikont?
  11:39am Doug Schulkind:

Hugo: Here is a description of the Mortika

http://www.mustrad.org.uk/reviews/mortika.htm

and here is this...

http://www.mediafire.com/?jix96ny31rre7hy
  11:41am ndbob:

It seems that more prewar music from Greece has been rereleased then from anywhere else other then the U.S.
  11:41am still b/p:

Couple of those other blog links on the W & B page are a little...unexpected, as is Jean Arthur as a pin-up cowgirl!
  11:44am Hugo:

I see. I was thinking of is this one:

http://tinyurl.com/3mjag2d
  11:45am Doug Schulkind:

still b/p,
I'd love to download tons of porn, but there's too much damn music.
  11:46am still b/p:

There's a song lyric fer ya.
  11:52am david:

hey, baby....I need to find me a cowgirl like those. Thanks for the Loretta stuff. As soon as my comp is up and running again I'll snatch it up. I'm so far behind on the Mining The Audio Motherload I'm almost afraid to start up again. It's going to be overwhelming. The good kind though.
  11:56am Doug Schulkind:

The perfect definition of "motherlode."
  11:57am david:

In a related note: be careful what porn you download. that stuff can mess up your computer.
  12:02pm ndbob:

great show as always Doug!
  12:02pm listener james from westwood:

wfmu is ear porn and i download it with aplomb.
  12:03pm listener james from westwood:

this show has been a perfect proofreading companion; thanks, doug!
  12:06pm annie:

funny, that, james, i have not been able to get any math done at all...
  12:06pm still b/p:
