My life today has been dominated by computers. No humour, no colours, no scents in the summer breeze. Just digits. You've no idea what a relief this show is.

Irwin, YOU'RE the MAN! Thanks for exposing the greater world to so much good outsider music.

Nick Mason Co-Wrote the following:

Interstellar Overdrive (1967) (The Piper at the Gates of Dawn)
A Saucerful Of Secrets (1968) (A Saucerful of Secrets)
Atom Heart Mother (1970) (Atom Heart Mother)
One of These Days (1971) (Meddle)
Echoes (1971) (Meddle)
Time (1973) (The Dark Side of the Moon)
  3:22pm
You Can Say That Again:

Amen. Nick Mason has to be one of the world's worst. I'm still a sucker for Meddle, but once you've heard Linda Sharrock on Black Woman, you'll never return to the Great Whatever in the Sky on DSOTM.
  3:26pm
Irwin:

If Peter K is listening -- BUDDY GRECO ALERT around 3:30.
  3:27pm
Davey:

Stu!!!!
  3:28pm
Davey:

Irwin, are you playing any Jimmy Haskill productions today?
  3:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Chris: The warm tangerine orange, enjoyable music and disturbing banter are relief to a great many of us. Welcome. Wednesday afternoon does not begin until the 3 o'clock edition!
  3:28pm
Nick Mason:

Silly wankers
  3:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

I think it was you, Irwin, who was on a Stu Spasm kick a while ago--I quite like him, make sure to pull him out more often.

he so epic!
  3:36pm

from jazziz mag: The Cossack speed-metal of the final cut - "Ferrous" - is blatant encore fluff: You can see the smug Downtown grins. Bah.
  3:41pm

Tullis & Clark gritty dance mix. Love those beats!
  3:42pm

This is a really great Tullis mix
  3:42pm
Dave B:

What's the story behind the download? Remix and send in?
  3:43pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

why are we bagging on Nick Mason?
  3:43pm
kurts:

yes that is it.. Remix it and send it to Irwin
  3:46pm
Van in Dallas:

@DCE - 'cause Irwin went on a little rant about him for some reason
  3:47pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

damn, I missed that...
  3:56pm
Dave B:

Irwin - is there a collection of the remixes others have done available, just to get an idea what not to do?
  3:56pm
Laura L:

Thanks for playing the new Mary Lorson, Irwin--her 10th full-length disc, per info in Kickstarter, where the album can be promoted, by the way.
  3:57pm
greg in dc:

I was thinking of the first Spirit albun yesterday, particularly "Fresh Garbage." That Randy California, my my. Somewhere there must be a recording of him and Hendrix backing up John Hammond
  3:58pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Have not heard the Minus 5 in like -5 years...welcome back to my ears!
  3:58pm
Irwin:

Dave: check the archives. I've aired about 45 different mixes of Tullis & Clark. Anything goes. It can be longer than a minute. Make it three. Or five. Go wild.
  4:06pm
Van in Dallas:

Liking the occasional horns today

Cyclocordoray is lovely.
  4:11pm

Totally agree, disastrogirl!
  4:12pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

  4:15pm
The Spirit of Orson Welles:

I was thinking "Citizen Dan." Maybe in a while. We will make no remix before its time.
  4:16pm
john:

i'm pretty sure there is a sub-strand of "hipsters" doing the beatnick thing...
  4:17pm
Kerouac's Ghost:

about to give you a beatnik beatdown brother
  4:17pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Monica! She always has amusing old records--not surprised she has a 1959 Beatnik musical.
  4:17pm
Brass Knuckles:

He's a rebel, he's a guru, and he's a beatnik.
  4:17pm
ginger tim:

Night People from Nervous Set is about Jean Shepherd -- throw that on too!
  4:19pm
The Spirit of Orson Welles:

Yeah, "Citizen Dan" -- 174 minutes or so. That gives you a couple minutes to introduce it beforehand, and then you can back announce and snark it up to your little heart's content at 5:57.
  4:19pm
Van in Dallas:

Get Jesse The Body Ventura on this donut shortage conspiracy right away
  4:19pm
Sean Daily:

Donuts?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Bastards!
  4:21pm
Sister Hairy Hymen:

Im stoned stop it please
  4:21pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

EAT BAGELS
  4:22pm
Marmalade Kitty:

calm down Irwin make your own..!
  4:22pm
Matt from Springfield:

There's not a donut shortage--they just opened a new Dunkin Donuts around here; though a chain email circulating claims that even though the store is in Virginia, China still OWNS it. They can "repatriate" the donuts you buy (and presumably after you eat) anytime.
  4:23pm
Public Enema:

Who stole the hole?
  4:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: Don't you remember Apu's secret? Bagels are just two day old donuts under a different name!
  4:24pm
ginger tim:

Crocus!
  4:24pm
hamburger:

that hole robs you of donut! / as mitch hedberg might say
  4:26pm
popo:

irwin should start a right wing conspiracy show ala fox, it would be refreshing, during the commute time i cannot listen to wfmu, it can be all those voices he likes to hear
  4:31pm
Marmalade Kitty:

Home baked Donuts are delightful mm m mmmm!
  4:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi MK!
Homemade donuts are divine, with the greasy outside and the inside still warm! And when camping out, fresh fried donuts are BEYOND AWESOME on a cold morning!
  4:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

PLASTERED!!! I feel colder than a toilet seat at 3 in the morning!
  4:34pm
hamburger:

!!!!
  4:34pm
Marmalade Kitty:

@hamburger: did you ever get round to baking those choc chilli cookies?
  4:35pm
geez:

will this Amanda stuff ever stop? this is when i turn to archieves
  4:36pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

how does an 11 year old kid sing about being plastered? yikes!
  4:36pm
Amanda Hataz Club:

Just call us "The Non-Silent Minority."
  4:36pm
hamburger:

nope! hasn't been my turn yet at work..
  4:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

geez, wanted in the State of New Jersey for "Archievery".
  4:37pm
Marmalade Kitty:

Hi Matt :)
  4:38pm
Amanda Hugginkiss:

@geez, I felt the same way for the first eight years I listened to Irwin's show. The scales will fall from your eyes. You're not in the mood? You GET in the mood!
  4:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: I asked Jody when Amanda and he were on the playlist--just to make sure it was HIM and not the 8/9 year old kid who wrote those lyrics! Though he said the Power Child regularly improv-ed her own stuff on top of his lyrics!
  4:40pm
Sean Daily:

So, wait... if he committed suicide, then how is he singing this song?
  4:40pm
Carmichael:

I'm off to San Jose. If anyone lives there, let me know. I'll buy you a beer for WFMU!
  4:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

@MK: So, did you feel that earthquake over in Manchester? ;) I've asked pretty much everyone so far, why stop now!
  4:41pm
Imagined Perspective:

@Sean: Beats me.
  4:41pm
Dionne W.:

@Carm: Do you really know the way to San Jose?
  4:42pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Matt, we felt a little shaking in Cleveland--got to leave the office for 20 minutes. Thank you, earthquake!
  4:43pm
Post-Silicon Valley San Jose:

@Dionne: If you once knew the way here, you sure wouldn't now, the way everything's built up and full of traffic...
  4:44pm
Tectonic Plate:

@DCE: After I crush you like the bug you are, *then* thank me.
  4:44pm
Dionne:

LA is a great big freeway.
  4:45pm
v k:

this Death Cab song isn't awful - progress
  4:45pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: Wow, that's all the way across the Appalachians, I would've thought those would contain the seismic waves.

They say because the East coast plates are more intact than CA's transverse fault plates, a smaller earthquake can be felt much further here.
  4:47pm
Carmichael:

I hope I do. I5 will get you anywhere.
  4:48pm
Earthquake:

We ripple outward from the shock point like a big ocean wave, running through the entire plate. The east coast is on one big plate.
  4:49pm
Stephin Merritt:

Highway 405 will take you
From the Boom Boom Room
To Interstate 5 which runs right to
the San Diego Zoo.
  4:50pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Irwin: I'll agree with you on naming yourselves after a Bongo Dog song. (Though I would prefer The Urban Spacemen).
  4:51pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ken?
  4:51pm
Marmalade Kitty:

what earthquake?
  4:51pm
trsh:

Hooray!!
  4:52pm
G:

Irwin is a long-range planner. The first Dan/Joel show was the very first show after the *last* marathon, and that's now revealed as his plan for next year's marathon premium.
  4:52pm
Matt from Springfield:

If Clay Pigeon hosted a show at the UCB there would be Foghat! (Or, at least a bassist from Kansas he met once in Tampa).
  4:52pm
Mike East:

@Matt - I suspect you felt it pretty strong, right? Were people freaking out down there?
  4:53pm
Happy Hour at Seismology Bar:

Gin and Tectonics
Fault Liquor
Lime Richter
  4:54pm
Carmichael:

Can I be the guy from California who tells the East Coasters to quit whining about a little shakey-shake? Lord knows I never get the chance.
  4:54pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Mike: Some were more freaked than others--the reaction of 90% was to head to the bars!

I was in a basement level, in a building where they're doing tons of work, so everyone thought it was just drilling or something at first. Evacuated for a good half hour or so.
  4:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

I certainly didn't think I would ever feel one in the East coast--I immediately guessed 5 on the Richter, because 4s and lower happen all the time and I've never felt those. 5.9 in Mineral, VA! But no one else even guessed, so I won!...or something.
  4:58pm
DJ Fran:

Thanks for airing the World Premier of "This Is Fran Tullis!"
  4:59pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: No, too late. We already had the one girl from California tell everyone at my office to "Get under your desks, idiots!" as everyone (myself included) were outright bewildered at just what to do. Nothing fell, and it only lasted around 15 secs, so that's a reminder for any next times!
  5:01pm
Irwin:

Yer welk, FB. Send more!
  5:02pm
Carmichael:

That's so you get crushed by the building AND your desk. Actually, the safest place to stand is in a doorway (it has the most bracing). Or in a cornfield, for that matter.
  5:03pm
DJ Fran:

Gimmee something and I will gladly destroy it for you.
  5:03pm
Yer Welk:

Tank you, tank you. Ladies and gentlemen, the Yer Welk show has entered the 21st century, we now have a Facebook page you can visit...
  5:04pm
Greg in Portland:

Irwin: great show, as per normal! Thanks for helping me get through the sleepy part of my work afternoon. Have you heard the new Moonface record by Wolf Parade's Spencer Krug? All him and organ. Really good new album.
  5:10pm
ScottC:

I think Dan and Joel are hitting their stride now....
  5:13pm
Carmichael:

Hey, it's one of those Boston songs, from one of those Boston albums.
  5:14pm
ScottC:

Clay! where ya been!
  5:15pm
Detroit Mac:

Boy - is this Boston tune Cheezy!
  5:15pm
DJ Fran:

And they all thought that if Boston ever played on WFMU that the world would come to en end. Well, I guess the song isn't' over yet.
  5:15pm
Ike:

Wow, this Boston song is one of the worst things I've ever heard. It's like aural cardboard mixed with Velveeta and vomit.
  5:15pm
Julie:

Holy hell it's Boston.
  5:16pm
Julie:

I've played Boston, and Clay has played Boston, but Irwin? Wowza
  5:18pm
J J:

Irwin = 1 Fucks given = 0
  5:18pm
cruel irony:

If you search the playlists, Boston shows up under "Strength Through Failure with Fabio" even though Clay played it.
  5:19pm
Julie:

hahah yeah Poor Fabio
  5:21pm
Julie:

this earthquake is more hyped than Avatar
  5:22pm
ScottC:

we've had two 3s in the last 24 hours so that beats your 5.6...
  5:22pm
Doc Poppins:

Just a rasher of bacon helps cholesterol go down, in a most delightful way!
  5:23pm
ScottC:

one big piece of bacon in the form of a Boston record...
  5:23pm
Carmichael:

We've had 4 earthquakes today, all at about 4.0. The cost of living in CA.
  5:23pm
Julie:

Now I want bacon
  5:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie 5:21: But it comes with 3-D glasses!
  5:25pm
ScottC:

@Carmichael - Really weird ones too- quick hard jolts. The house acts surprised.
  5:25pm
DJ Fran:

Fish is the gateway meat for vegetarians. Bacon is crack.
  5:26pm
Carmichael:

And ribs are heroin. Sweet, sweet heroin.
  5:26pm
TnA:

Touch my bum bum bum. Look at my bum bum bum...
  5:26pm
ScottC:

now I want bacon stuffed trout.
  5:27pm
DJ Fran:

Ribs wrapped in bacon and deep fired in pure lard.
  5:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

A++ for Mary Hopkin a la Welsh!
Have you ever played her "Y Blodyn Gwen"?
  5:28pm
Julie:

ahhh Mary Hopkin
  5:30pm
ben drinken:

I usually get the whole pig head at roasts because nobody else rarely wants it. BEST meat on the animal besides the belly and bacon. The eyes are wonderful. and they are yummy wrapped in bacon. not kidding.
  5:31pm
Julie:

wow that whole album is in Welsh
  5:31pm
ginger tim:

@BK that is exactly why they invented kosher!
  5:31pm
Jew Eat:

This comment board is getting repugnant.
  5:32pm
ginger tim:

um meant @BD - I've had a few already myself
  5:32pm
Carmichael:

@Ben: the jowl is the best meat on the entire cloven-hoofed animal. So I sayeth.
  5:32pm
G:

Traifferiffic!
  5:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

What year is this Jimmie Komack from?
  5:36pm
Irwin:

1952, I think
  5:36pm
Julie:

that Komack reminded me of the Codger's Money Money Money
  5:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Irwin: Thanks!
@Julie: Except, maybe 50-70 years younger than the Codg...
  5:41pm
G:

Wiki saith Kormack was widely believed to be the illegitimate son of Milton Berle.
  5:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie This is a different kind of Herman's than their usual stuff.
  5:52pm
Matt from Springfield:

That was wonderful Vetiver, and I always love "Baby Get Lost".
  5:52pm
Lenny:

.......thanks for playing the "Ghost Train" selection./Lenny
  5:54pm
Irwin:

Thanks for suggesting, Lenny.
  5:57pm
Carmichael:

See ya, Irwin and everyone.
  5:57pm
ben drinken:

great show today. As the weather starts to change in late summer and we get cool breezes and cool nights I start thinking of the pending wfmu record fair. and begin thinking about planning the trip.
  5:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

Great to have you back Irwin, and great show!
  5:58pm
Jack:

Perfect. thanks, Irwin, a great show.
  5:58pm
