  8:40am annie:

  8:41am Doug Schulkind:

Ah yes, the calm before the storm...as it were.
  8:43am annie:

the doppler on weather underground shows activity down off the carolina coast.. and lots of precip coming up from the southwest of here tennessee -ish
  8:44am Doug Schulkind:

Doppler is just a fun word to say out loud, isn't it? Doppler, doppler, doppler!
  8:49am annie:

how did you guess!! not to mention all its various connotations and uses!! yay for langauge!!
  8:49am listener james from westwood:

i wouldn't be tremendously concerned in northern nj about the storm, having gotten thru t.s. floyd in 99 and a bad nor'easter in '10 w no prob, but i have 2 elderly parents 1 town over in a house w/ old trees near it. will feel more sanguine on monday.
  8:50am Doug Schulkind:

I would dearly love to be back in Brooklyn, battening down with my old friends and neighbors. Will just have to do it sonically here with use guys.
  8:53am texas scott:

hurricanes,heatwaves...
what'd you gonna do...
  8:54am Maggie in Rock Tavern:

I live in the kind of house affectionately called a "tornado magnet". This means it will not attract hurricanes. Right?
  8:54am Scott W:

JC Downtown in the house!!! morning Doug
  8:55am Doug Schulkind:

Oi oi, Scott!
  8:55am Hugo:

Wouldn't mind being back on Bergen Street. Meanwhile, have to make do with Bergen County, the very eastern one ...
  8:56am listener james from westwood:

i'm in a rental, so were my parents in retirementville in az or ut or something, i'd just load up the car & head west. i'm due a vacation anyway. at least there's less of a flood risk where my parents and i live. loss of power and wind damage are the big things on my mind.
  8:56am Doug Schulkind:

How many days above 100°F for you, Texas Scott?
  8:56am postmanpaul:

Hey Doug! Hey commentators! Hey hurrican Irene! Bring it on.
  8:57am listener james from westwood:

hugo, you're in bergen as well? you near the coastal regions of it?
  8:57am Doug Schulkind:

On today's show: 51 different versions of "Goodnight Irene." No, not really.
  8:58am Brian in UK:

Morning friends. Is that 51 versions for every year of your life?
  8:59am Doug Schulkind:

Hey, buddy, I'm only 50. Don't rush me.
  9:00am Scott W:

go doug, you're live!!!
  9:00am Brian in UK:

You are in your 51st year my friend.
  9:01am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks Scott!
  9:01am listener james from westwood:

ah, the hatikva before the drummer. it's been a while!
  9:03am Parq:

Wait, you're on the regular air feed today? Way cool! Looking forward to the whole show.
  9:03am still b/p:

All 51 versions at...the...same...tiiiiiime!
  9:03am Doug Schulkind:

Live on both, automagically! Thanks to board-op Scott Williams.
  9:04am Parq:

Except I can't believe you didn't arrange it so you could segue straight from Hatkiva to Juju.
  9:04am pierre:

Bonjour D. Schulkind !

just landing here right after HotRod 's show…
i'm ready to give the drummer some.
  9:05am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings Pierre!
  9:05am annie:

hey bp- i have a friend who wants to relocate her business to portland.. she's an expert jeweler.. .. any feedback on that?
  9:05am Brian in UK:

There's only one Scott Williams.
  9:07am Scott W:

too true, Brian in UK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFV4Ej6eOTk
  9:07am Hugo:

Might we expect "Good night Irene" on the show?
  9:08am pierre:

Scott Williams, dj, ice skater… spinning some records, and some icy tricks.
  9:09am listener james from westwood:

He's a triple-axel threat!
  9:09am Doug Schulkind:

Irene is already fast asleep, Hugo. Folks can tune in Monday afternoon for Irene.

  9:09am annie:

i'm dancing.. in my head.. is this a milonga?
  9:09am Scott W:

have you met the dulcimer player?
  9:10am Hugo:

James in Westwood : Definitely coastal region, but so far east so as to be west coast ..
  9:11am Paul Sherratt:

Just got in ... what a simply cracking start, Mr DJ ! I need to add that to my collection ...
  9:11am still b/p:

annie -- Lots of jewelry makers here, especially with new ones coming out of the art school regularly. Don't know if that makes the market either tight or thriving. But it's a city with great creative circles. If she's more of a traditional jewelry retailer/specialist...not sure how the area would be graded.
  9:12am listener james from westwood:

drummer's sounding great coming out of the big radio speakers this morning. hurricane stress is being tango'd away. good morning all!!
  9:13am annie:

she doesn't make it, she repairs it and she's top notch. she's also interested in the art scene, there too..she's traveling up there to check it out, i'll let you know when she goes; she may even drag me!
  9:13am Scott W:

there really is only one Doug Schulkind, http://tinyurl.com/4xhy77v
  9:14am Doug Schulkind:

Brother Paul Sherratt, one of Give the Drummer Some's ace foreign correspondents! How's that fighting going in Libya, Paul?
  9:15am jill:

Good morning Doug, etal - Here's a Hurricane Bingo playing card (it's Houston, TX-centric) but you can get a good laugh from it -
http://media.houstonpress.com/2414288.0.pdf
  9:16am Brian in UK:

Esperanza, that's what you all will be needing methinks. Tell it like it is Astor, baby.
  9:16am Doug Schulkind:

Morning Jill! I'm afraid to open up a pdf on the same computer that's running the show. (I'm a nervous Nellie.) Please describe in 1,500 words or less.
  9:19am chris in durban:

late check in - thanks for waiting - on board - now to tidy the office and shuffles papers whiule you surprise me Doug - thanks
  9:20am Doug Schulkind:

Glad you're aboard, Chris. Happy tidyings!
  9:20am jill:

Its a Bingo card for use while you are watching the news reports of the hurricane. You get to put a chip on a square every time you see "Floor level shots of shopping carts filled with plastic water jugs" or a you see "A toothless old guy saying he'll ride this one out like all of the others" - you get the picture
  9:21am Brian in UK:

Is this a marching band tango?
  9:21am still b/p:

annie -- Tell her to hit any First Friday of the month Artwalk -- but especially before the colder season -- to observe a very busy downtown gallery and sidewalk scene.I always end up getting intown with limited time and stopping to talk to too many people to catch a filling enough portion of the artwork.
Give a heads-up if you head here.
  9:23am annie:

oh!! doug i played the stream in the store for my shift. it was a great great selection and the kitchen crew were very happy; and you KNOW the kitchen has to be happy.. the editing is going along very well.. and the volume for the store made it all very dance-able. customers were pleased with the tunes, too. you get an A+!!!
  9:23am Parq:

Jill, I love it, I wish I could play along. I am watching my friends and neighbors freak out with increasing exasperation. You would think this never happened before.
  9:23am Paul Sherratt:

Doug,
Stiff resistance anticipated in Sirte ...
  9:24am texas scott:

60 days above 100F.
YEEHAW!
Pass the Coronas.
  9:24am Doug Schulkind:

If resistance isn't stiff, it ain't worth a...
  9:26am Paul Sherratt:

texas scott,
Here you can have one from this UK-based fridge - if my arms are long enough ..
  9:27am Brian in UK:

Paul, thought Corona was a lemonade?
  9:27am texas scott:

much obliged,Paul!
  9:28am listener james from westwood:

60 days > 100 is ultra-f'd up. damn. wish some of this rain we're gonna could very gently divert and irrigate the center/southwest US.
  9:28am Parq:

Brian, it's shandy, as Pat McD's "Mooch" said of the beach.
  9:29am Hugo:

Doug, that reminds of an ad for a record company - if it ain't stiff it ain't etc. Good record company, though ...
  9:30am Brian in UK:

Thanks Parq

Here Mr Waits is due a new one soon.
  9:30am Doug Schulkind:

Exactly, Hugo.
  9:30am Stanley:

@Brian, do you remember the pop lorry?
  9:31am listener james from westwood:

good news on the waits count, brian!
  9:32am still b/p:

Sun City Girls was like Knights Who Say...I Can't Tell What.

It's fun to do some game stacking, trying to predict -- a la Family Feud -- what items are on the Hurricane bingo card.
  9:32am Brian in UK:

Yes, Stanley. Used to get money back on the bottle too.
  9:34am Parq:

Pop Lorry ran the filling station down to Elm Street back in the day. Always let kids blow up balloons with the air hose.
  9:35am jill:

Message from Mr. Waits found here:
http://www.tomwaits.com/news/

But wait until after the Drummer's show!
  9:35am Paul Sherratt:

Lemonade, Brian ? ( does that translate in the US ? )
It's cake !
http://www.flickr.com/photos/charleyscakes/2727680969/
  9:37am Brian in UK:

Doug, could you play Olinga sometime without talkover or someother Milt Jackson.
  9:38am Hugo:

It may taste like lemonade. Probably does.
  9:39am Doug Schulkind:

I'd be happy to, Brian in UK. Maybe it's time I did another "all music bed" show where I only play the background music.
  9:41am FEMA:

Make sure your weed-whacker is in good operating condition and furnished with ample whacking string. A family weed-whacking drill is recommended if forecasts show your home area within 200 miles of the storm path.
  9:42am Brian in UK:

I swear that I used to own Olinga once in the 70's but it disappeared. Everytime you play it, like I'm hearing it for the first time. Very odd.
  9:42am Doug Schulkind:

"Ample whacking" just sounds naughty to me. Anyone else?
  9:42am Salat:

Hey Doug, did you say Charlie Lewis was goin to be on the air sometime this coming week?
  9:43am texas scott:

whack 'em if you got 'em!
  9:43am Brian in UK:

Ample whacking only if there is stiff resistance.
  9:44am BodegaMan:

morning all, been on the comment board.

I went to this place mono + mono on E. 4th street NYC last night. The decor is a crate diggers delight, one wall of 10,000ish LPs is a beauty to behold. The LP conveyor to the DJ on the balcony is kind of clunky but if you're in the area worth the stop. and if korean chicken wings are your thing...
  9:44am annie:

whack-a -mole my favorite appetizer or game depending on where i am..
  9:46am Hugo:

Found this rating of Corona on the web:

Corona was invented to keep the Mexican water supply stable and supplement its citizens with a watered down product that is actually boiled over. It’s drinkable yes, but if I were in Corona commercial I’d drop the beer and drink the salt water in front of me. Atleast it has flavor. No need to go in to the full details of drinking this unsatisfying brew, the only people reading these ratings are the ones filling in the gaps to drink real beer.

You have been warned.
  9:47am Doug Schulkind:

Salat, no I mused that Charlie will hopefully be back on the Give the Drummer Radio stream this fall. Charlie had been doing his show Busy Doing Nothing on Thursday mornings on the stream, but took a break for the summer.

Give the Drummer Radio is an alternate stream I started for WFMU back in June 2010 when I moved to Pittsburgh. My plan is to make it a hybrid stream and broadcast channel with mixing DJ programming and streaming content.
  9:47am Scott M.:

Thanks for batting for me this morning, Doug! Nice to listen to you live for a change. Evac'ing Long Beach Island, NJ!
  9:49am Salat:

Thanks Doug, always up at 6am to listen to you live on Fridays. I miss Charlie.
  9:49am Doug Schulkind:

Hey Scott! Hope my rally is Long enough! Sorry about the bollixed vacay.
  9:49am still b/p:

That description of the coming release on the Tom Waits site -- doesn't that promo writing style read like something he'd flick his ash on and laugh at?
  9:51am Scott M.:

Your Rally is plenty Long.
  9:53am Paul Sherratt:

>>this rating of Corona on the web

It wasn't signed ' Sol ' Hoopii , was it Hugo ???
  10:00am jk:

loving the turkish tunes this morning
  10:00am Doug Schulkind:

I love pronouncing Hoopii's last name: HOE-oh-PEE-ee
  10:01am Doug Schulkind:

Morning jk,
Dug your show this week...
  10:02am jill:

B/P - agreed. I think that they should have just stuck with the corresponding video of Tom's promotion. I particularly like his line: "what if you just had a root canal and i asked you to gargle with raw sewage? would you be okay with that?"
  10:07am Hugo:

Hawaiian beer is surely better than that, though I wouldn't pretend to know. In the process of exploring the wonders of US micro breweries. Yum ...
  10:07am listener james from westwood:

on the beer point: i have a single magic hat no. 9 in the fridge. gonna have to down that before the power craps out. prob. the easiest bit of storm prep i'll do.
  10:07am Brian in UK:

Did you say TUBA?
  10:10am Alf From Upstate:

Aw yeah, baby, a big brass horn in your face, yo.
  10:12am Hugo:

That must be Bob Stewart on tuba. Saw Blythe and Stewart here in town years back. Got them to sign an lp I brought along. Blythe looked at the cover and said wistfully: "I was younger then ...".
  10:13am pgw in mntclr:

thanks for mentioning the "mining" page... anne briggs, peg leg sam, and marion brown. mindblowing.
  10:13am texas scott:

thanks for the Bryn Jones (Sufiq) during last talkover.
I got some diggin' to do.
  10:14am Doug Schulkind:

By the way, I totally DON'T believe that giant-rat-killed-by-pitchfork-in-Brooklyn photo.

But, YES, I do believe it's Bob Stewart on tuba. Wait for his solo, coming up...
  10:14am Scott W:

Hey Doug, here come the EAS! Please read at your convenience: "The National Weather Service has issued a tropical storm watch for Hunterdon County, NJ; effective until 4:07pm"
  10:15am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks Scott W. I was wondering if/when that would come up. I'm on it.
  10:17am trish:

some fine friday listening, right here
  10:19am Doug Schulkind:

Hey hey Trish! How the heck R you?
  10:19am Scott W:

I love that it starts w/ little landlocked Hunterdon! kinda makes it more menacing.
  10:20am trish:

happy with some good tunes in my earbuds.
and all around aok fine thanks great and you?
  10:22am Doug Schulkind:

I could use a job (desperately) but other than that, peachy!
  10:25am Scott M.:

While we're at it, let's give it up for Joe Daley. No one ever talks about tuba players. Poor guys.
  10:26am jk:

thanks Doug, late comment due to a super busy day at work today in anticipation of students returning like a hurricane. Thanks for tuning in, it was an island of fun in a chaotic week
  10:26am Parq:

I remember "The Jick or Mandrill's Cosmic Ass" from back in the day. Great to hear an old friend again.
  10:28am Doug Schulkind:

Nothing like sharing a little Cosmic Mandrill Ass.
  10:30am Hugo:

Mandrill was also the name of a band?
  10:31am Doug Schulkind:

http://mandrillis.com/
  10:36am trish:

I'd hire you in a second, if I were the hiring type, Doug.
  10:37am Brian in UK:

This was regarded as the funniest joke at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year.
'I needed a password eight characters long so I picked Snow White and the Seven Dwarves'
  10:38am Doug Schulkind:

Your love lifts me hirer and hirer.
  10:39am listener james from westwood:

this lightmen track—daaaaaaaaaamn!
  10:40am Doug Schulkind:

LJ from W, it's on the Motherlode. Go. Find. Dig it.
  10:41am Brian in UK:

Hugo I remember Mandrill's first album, funk band if I recall, one of many in the Sargasso Sea of funk in the 70's.
  10:42am holland oats:

drummersome! so nice to once again stumble upon your funkyfreshiosity
  10:44am Hugo:

I think I might have that one. Gotta go look it up later.
  10:51am Matt from Springfield:

Hey Doug! Glad to hear you on the main stream!
(At work I can only hear FMU through the Flash player--bastards!)
  10:52am listener rey:

good morning doug and fellow listeners. At work today so can only listen intermittently but am enjoying it all. Mandrill is most def a funk band and they still tour, in fact they were at BB Kings in nyc earlier this month
  10:52am Matt from Springfield:

Though you are correct about the many great streams available--yours, the others and KUSF-in-exile. And...I believe all of them run 24/7!
  10:52am annie:

mr oats: you said freshiosity!!
  10:52am Doug Schulkind:

Howdy, Brother Holland. I'm always here (on the stream). You know where to find me.

Matt from Springfield, I'm hopeful that we'll be able to deliver the stream via Flash player someday soon.
  10:53am Doug Schulkind:

Great to see you're here, Rey!
  10:56am Brian in UK:

Doug, have you played anything on the Shamisen recently? Modern or older.
  10:58am Matt from Springfield:

Flash stream--wonderful, Doug! I do hope that comes through.
  10:59am Doug Schulkind:

Brian in UK, I believe I played some shamisen in the past few months. Always time for more, I guess...
  10:59am holland oats:

@annie what do i win?
  10:59am Cheri Pi:

You are a mind reader, I was just thinking about Gal Costa!!!
  11:00am Doug Schulkind:

Cheri Pi, I have a chip embedded in your back left molar. {sorry!}
  11:02am annie:

hhmmmm.. you win any drink of your choice on me when you come yup to the inn.
  11:03am Cheri Pi:

Teeheehee, so you probably put the idea in my head in the first place!
  11:04am Matt from Springfield:

Beatles' Sun King Fans: Did anyone else just hear "chicka verde" in this song?
  11:07am Mike East:

My favorite Santana track since I was a kid. nice.
  11:09am Dead Corporate Eyes:

love it when that organ kicks in!
  11:11am Brian in UK:

'We are ever so clean'
  11:14am Matt from Springfield:

I was wondering if this was going to be a Cowsills song, as they often used that same keyboard sound (the electronic cascading one).
  11:18am Mike East:

me too, DCE! That album's got some great B3
  11:23am Matt from Springfield:

This Galwad y Mynydd is great. Good vocals and production, and the lush Welsh language. Two thumbs up for the Cymru!!
  11:25am Doug Schulkind:

Wales has the coolest. flag. ever.
  11:33am listener rey:

the spanish lyrics in that set were totally unexpected. I like
  11:34am Hugo:

Nice to see the Blossom Toes on here. Very much of its time, one might say. Rereleased on lp.
  11:39am Cymric Pronunciation Help:

You got the Welsh title passably well, but the word "lliw" is pronounced "(ch)ew", but it's a "ch" like "ach" in German.
  11:40am Doug Schulkind:

If you like, Rey, I like.
  11:41am Doug Schulkind:

Cymric Pronunciation Help:
I'll have to (ch)ew on that one. My tongue thanks you.
  11:43am Cymric Pronunciation Help:

It's a general rule when you see a double-l at the start of a Welsh word, and almost all "w" are pronounced "oo". Thanks for playing Galwad y Mynydd. :)
  11:45am Bunt Kake:

I dig that Three RIng Circus LP. Picked up a copy recently. Side 2, the instrumental side, is great.
  11:45am Doug Schulkind:

My pleasure!
  11:45am Matt from Springfield:

Google Language Tools--it's a godsend for inter-lingual queries. And, it's got a crude but workable digital pronunciation guide.
  11:46am Doug Schulkind:

Bunt Kake,
I was thinking of looping some of those Three Ring Circus instrumentals and using them as talkover tracks.
  11:47am jake blake:

I wish i could understand this
  11:48am "Chocolate Stars":

Is an awesome band name. Go Curaçao!
  11:49am Scott W:

"lliw" is a little more complicated than "ch" - the "ll" tells you to put your tongue on the roof of your mouth and blow air out the sides. "Llangollen" is an especially messy word in public
  11:49am Doug Schulkind:

Papi Oviedo on tres!!
  11:50am Matt from Springfield:

Roughly, it pronounces that title as:
"Need uur een hen gwest-ti-in oid ooth ee loo". Welsh sounds a lot better by a native speaker!

bravissimo, doug!
  11:56am Doug Schulkind:

Scott W, this is my last track. When it ends, I'll play my closing theme, which I'll talk over, then let run. The closing theme will have enough time to run until about 12:04 in case Bryce is late arriving. If you need to, you can just let my stream run after I switch back to the queue. It goes forever (hurricane willing).

Thanks Monica!
