Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

I hope they're paying you overtime!
  7:05pm
hamburger:

it must be christmas
  7:05pm
Clay:

We're baaaaaack!
  7:05pm
Julie:

Help I'm prisoner of WFMU!
  7:07pm
G:

They must "have something" on you two...
  7:07pm
Dan B from Upstate:

You guys have been there since what, yesterday morning?
  7:08pm
G:

Are the Bickersons gonna fight some more? :-)

Irene's back end is windier than her front enmd.
  7:09pm
mike east:

This is very exciting. Hopefully my wife won't mind me having the radio on for six hours.
  7:09pm
marc:

WOW, this is a great treat after a horrific storm... Clay Pigeon & Julie.
  7:09pm
Tim Serpas:

I was hoping Gaylord would end his show with "Hail Satan" the way Bill Zeebub did. Oh well.
  7:09pm
Minnesota Jeff:

Clay & Julie: THE RADIO WARRIORS!
  7:11pm
Julie:

yep since yesterday am though we didn't go on air till midnight
  7:11pm
Curious listener:

I wonder why Gaylord is such a prima donna about a playlist with such a great program
  7:11pm
marc:

hey.. play "Dust In the Wind."
  7:12pm
marc:

or "Windy" by the Association
  7:12pm
T-Zero:

Wow, Julie and Clay. Have you two been able to leave the station at all?
  7:12pm
tranewreck:

Welcome back....heroic!
did you ever find Coltrane's "After The Rain?"
  7:12pm
ben drinken:

i am worried more about the next 24 hours as the storm keeps dumping water all the way up north. has potential to make the rivers and lakes fill up and flood many communities along the way down stream. strange that it will be all sunny tomorrow and we will see flooding in broad sunny daylight.
  7:13pm
Julie:

we went for a food hunt when Bill was on
  7:14pm
Dan B from Upstate:

Absolutely impressive.
  7:15pm
hamburger:

:)
  7:15pm
marc:

oh cool... i didn't think you guys took requests...thank you.
  7:16pm
Julie:

when it's easy, yes :) I didn't have Kansas handy
  7:16pm
T-Zero:

Was there much open, Julie?
  7:16pm
Clay:

One should always have Kansas handy!
  7:17pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Hello again Julie and clay.
  7:17pm
marc:

no this is a great cover..who is she she? she has a great voice.
  7:17pm
Julie:

yes rain had stopped. lots of pedestrian traffic. This is Sarah Brightman
  7:17pm
KS:

Carry on my wayward daughter!
  7:18pm
marc:

OH i love her voice too... didn't know it. thank you for playing it.
  7:19pm
?:

Clay _has_ a singing voice!
  7:19pm
T-Zero:

Sarah Brightman... she *does* have a great voice. She does great shows as well.
  7:19pm
marc:

i saw her in Phantom. she's great.
  7:20pm
ben drinken:

i would like to see Julie and Clay try to break the record at least set by Glenn Jones on air for the longest. it would also be entertaining to hear Clay break down in deprived sleep stupor after 3 days, but is that how he functions anyway?
  7:22pm
Julie:

oh no way....I'm too fragile for this. I'm hoping I can recover by monday night!
  7:22pm
other david:

I hope Ken awards you both distinguished service medals or.. at least a bottle of whiskey each - epic fill in :)
  7:22pm
Julie:

OD remind him of that ;)
  7:23pm
Robert:

Mr. Pigeon IIRC lives in NYC. Julie I'm guessing from the amount of time she spends at WFMU has a(n under-) paid job there that keeps her there much of the time. Please tell us if my guess is wrong, Julie.
  7:23pm
Clay:

zappa
  7:23pm
Julie:

not currently with a paid gig here...just massive volunteer..I live in NYC as well
  7:24pm
fxo:

be kind to our "air personalities". & oh yeah, be kind, rewind.
  7:24pm
Robert:

ben, if they go for the record, is it more impressive to do it as a pair, or more impressive solo?
  7:25pm
?:

I <3 that 80's bass guitar effect
  7:26pm
Robert:

That's amazing, Julie. I'm always impressed by the help there, paid or not, and I'm always thinking about the people who are (usually) off-mike and seem to be under-credited.
  7:26pm
hamburger:

anyone still use VHS?
  7:26pm
Julie:

FXO! I should just stay and do your show with you in the morning haha I'm here till 6
  7:27pm
Julie:

@robert I was off mic for 7 or 8 years
  7:27pm
ben drinken:

well, robert, i am pretty sure clay can do it no doubt by himself, but he would only be able to do it if others are constantly around to support him. the big test would be to see if clay could be on the air even for one hour by himself without needing someone else as a straight man or side kick. I don't think i have heard clay on the air more than 20 minutes aside from his taped show without him needing to accost someone into the studio to join him.
  7:29pm
gail:

Clay and Julie, the voices that allowed me to feel connected all night last night! kiss kiss love love
  7:30pm
Julie:

hello Gail!
  7:30pm
Parq:

As soon as I turned the radio on and heard "Dust in the Wind", I knew you guys were back. How much did Burns have to argue to get you to give up the con for a while?
  7:30pm
Clay:

TY Gail
  7:31pm
Julie:

Gaylord was a gentleman. We didn't have to rassle Burns.
  7:33pm
other david:

@ben drinken: clay filled in for Julie's three hour night shift a few months back on his own - and did a great job

Loving the track selection: award yourselves another cup of coffee :)
  7:33pm
T-Zero:

Well one thing's for sure. I'll fade out to sleep way before either of you.
  7:34pm
Julie:

sleep? sleep is for the weak!
  7:36pm
hamburger:

no rest for the wicked!
  7:36pm
marc:

clay and julie guided us through the storm and got us to safety.
  7:37pm
ben drinken:

ok that settles it. clay should apply to guinness world records for his run at being super k dj on air for the longest. he would win!!!
  7:37pm
seang:

orville
  7:39pm
courage:

Sorry, but that is what most NY/NJ people lack. I drove from the Maine border to Philly last night and had the whole road to myself. Some rain and a little wind, but the mainstream radio news made it sound like end times. Thanks for being on air and calm last night.
My wife, daughter (named Irene by coincidence!) and I enjoyed the brief sanity.
Think maybe best not waste any more of our lives listening to WIN or KYW... the latter still uses background teletype sound effects for whatever excitement it may provide senior listeners.
  7:40pm
Robert:

And when you were off mic, Julie, was that all volunter time? I & my friends have experience with a lot of organiz'ns, and it's very hard to get some things done without paying. There are things that I did as a volunteer on & off, and then paid on & off.
  7:41pm
?:

voice sounds better now, Clay
  7:41pm
ben drinken:

we watched clay in the movie he was in as super k dj. awesome! the rest of the movie not so great. butt clay was mesmerizing. so great
  7:41pm
other david:

That was a beautiful Coltrane piece, could you let us know the name? :)
  7:42pm
12539:

"After the rain," no?
  7:42pm
Julie:

@Rob yep I stuffed envelopes, did lots of office work, data entry etc.
  7:43pm
listener gary:

hello to clay and julie. D bowie is fine by me. good to have you in the midst of this settling chaos.Bowie ...blue.
  7:43pm
Julie:

love Bowie
  7:43pm
courage:

Of course, it was dumb of me to drive into a hurricane, but what the hell.
  7:44pm
other david:

@12539, thank you sir!
  7:44pm
Robert:

courage, the intersesting thing last night was the program whose expert said that officials etc. had over-reacted -- "Coast to Coast AM", which is NOT local! So if you're out of it you can look objecively, but the locals have to shill for Satan.
  7:46pm
Minnesota Jeff:

ben drinkin: "Bending All the Rules" is one wretched movie, yowzers that was bad. But then all of a sudden there's Clay Pigeon is this wild outfit reading trivia.
  7:49pm
JT:

Holy crap, has this been on all day?!!?! You guys rock. I wish I'd been listening.
  7:49pm
ben drinken:

yes, minnesota jeff, clay did one hell of a performance in that part. all to cool and awsome. i look forward to seeing clay at the record fair every year. he brings the presence.
  7:49pm
Parq:

It comes as news to me, albeit good news, to learn that *anybody* is contending that the media over-reacted. I'd been pleading with people to be reasonable since last Friday morning, and I was blasted for it, as though I had suggested that we all build tree houses with glass walls.
  7:49pm
cheri:

hiya clay & julie,,did you have any power outatages where you were at? i did,, btw speaking dolls,,julie do you believe i have collection of tinkerbell dolls?? i'm 30,,i just love tinkerbell!!!
  7:51pm
Julie:

No power outages here! just leaks
  7:52pm
Julie:

@JT we have been coming and going..we are here til 12, and I believe we may be back at 3am
  7:52pm
Parq:

Oh wow, I haven't heard "Shannon" in, um, a dog's age, and we actually had a dog named Shannon in the 80s.
  7:53pm
Robert:

fxo, did you also help out with various things at the station during your years away from there?
  7:54pm
cheri:

clay & julie my brother had his whole basement flooded and his power is STILL out,,,
  7:54pm
Client Sine:

Clay, do you know / like "Marley Purt Drive" by the Bee Gees? The last song made me think of it.
  7:55pm
jayray:

Hey Julie. Here's to being between 35 and 45 and a full head of hair. Always willing to give it a go. The ball is in your court.
  7:55pm
Robert:

I suspect Our Leaders of using this as an exercise for the next 9/11. Sorry to be such a bummer, but that's my suspicion.
  7:55pm
Clay:

I have a cool version of that song by Lulu, Sine.
  7:56pm
Minnesota Jeff:

CLAY: I know you have some issues with Yes' new album without Jon Anderson, but what about "Drama"? I just picked that album up and I like it a lot. Its a tad heavier than their usual output.
  7:56pm
Roger:

Good show. Can you post a playlist or at least back announce what you've played, please.
  7:56pm
Third Policeman:

This may be the freest of free form. Go, Clay and Julie!
  7:56pm
Julie:

Roger I plan to fill in the playlist when this chaos is over, don't worry.
  7:57pm
other david:

This song is one my very guilty pleasures
  7:57pm
courage:

@fake me:
Irene was a tropical storm in New England. But you'd never know it from any broadcast source there. What is the point of a hand-crank emergency radio if all you get is blathering idiots (some taking calls from a studio in California last night!)The feared Class One Kill Storm had my mom shaking in her bed in Virginia last night (fully clothed and the dogs equipped with their own survival kits!) never quite materialized and she was disappointed.
Do we just want a dramatic death or something? I call mass insanity.
  7:57pm
Julie:

@jayray where you live?
  7:59pm
cheri:

well i'll see you a little clay & julie,, bye for now
  7:59pm
jayray:

Wherever you want me to live.
  8:00pm
winnebago man:

fuck you wind.
  8:01pm
courage:

On the other hand, maybe some dramatic deaths were avoided thanks to the media hype.
  8:01pm
Minnesota Jeff:

Whoa, what is this??? Terrence Malick start a band?
  8:03pm
Robert:

Cf. "The Avengers" episode "The Morning After".
  8:03pm
Roger:

Thanks, but my short term memory is very short term. What was the fusion-y thing you played early in your set, and then the 5 things you played after?
  8:03pm
david:

I love how the Dusty Show and Dark Night of the Soul are always on now.
  8:03pm
Client Sine:

(I feel Julie's voice is reminiscent of a major Hollywood actress, and it is amusing to listen and imagine they are one in the same. Ever play that game?)
  8:04pm
Julie:

@david weird isn't it? I was wishing I had fill-ins so I could be on more, and now in abundance!
  8:04pm
courage:

@ fake C: tell it to the heart attack vic who died boarding up his home. Decidedly dramatic in a useless kinda way.
  8:04pm
Robert:

I'd phone in here, but one reason I'm in now is that I have a cold and laryngitis.
  8:07pm
jayray:

Nice.
  8:07pm
david:

@Julie Well, I hope Clay has let you cross a few more things of your list. I made it till about 3 last night, and it was nothing if not the best... great hurricane callers, too!
  8:07pm
listener gary:

who's singing this "What would you say?" I can only think somethin smith and i think that is wrong. (Something) red. mongo jerry?
  8:08pm
Parq:

I had the nerve to say "The Man wants you scared" and was ridiculed as a tinfoil hat type. "Tell the emperor's clothes I said I", I want to retort.
  8:08pm
earplugger:

This is the worst song I have ever heard
  8:08pm
earplugger:

This is the worst song I have ever heard
  8:09pm
Robert:

Heck, Client Sine, I get people (even fictional characters) mixed up all the time without even trying, as for instance if they have similar names.
  8:09pm
marc:

who sang that last track?
  8:10pm
courage:

I'd rather tell the guy who was killed when a tree fell on his car.
  8:10pm
cheri:

i like this special show ,,but could you play some disco clay & julie,,how about it?
  8:10pm
jayray:

Where in TX?
  8:10pm
listener gary:

hurrican smith! Right.I liked that so much I went to sam goodies and bought a 45. it is one of five that I still have. Maid in France being another.
  8:11pm
T-Zero:

Clay or Julie, would you have Esther Phillips' "Stormy Weather" handy?
  8:12pm
david:

Poet of the organ
  8:13pm
Julie:

who sang which song?
  8:13pm
Mike:

you had me at "german new wave"
  8:14pm
jayray:

Oh. This is good. I don't know German, but the beat is great.
  8:14pm
david:

Has "Happy To Be Stuck With You" by Huey Lewis & the News been played yet?
  8:17pm
marc:

hurricane smith...Got it
  8:18pm
G:

trivia -- Hurricane Smith is actually Norman Smith, who produced Beatles albums down to Rubber Soul, then the first four Floyd albums. John Lennon sarcastically nicknamed him Hurricane because he never rushed or got upset.
  8:19pm
Mike:

hurricane smith goes to washington, peace and prosperity ensues
  8:19pm
marc:

i could see that...
  8:19pm
cheri:

ohhh clay,,,did you know that julie & i have two things in common,,,,we both love disco and this girl group the cake,,
  8:20pm
Ralphine:

Have you played Bob Dylan's "Hurricane" at any point?
  8:20pm
jayray:

Sleep deprivation really wearing on those DJ skills? Great show, though. You guys can do no wrong in my book.
  8:21pm
Julie:

I had to run in to cover and then found that the computer was already playing a song, so we got an Ian Dury Mungo Jerry mashup
  8:22pm
jayray:

You totally made up for it. Nice.
  8:23pm
Julie:

I feel surprisingly alert but I am dragging my feet when I walk.
  8:23pm
david:

seriously, I could think of no two better people to get stuck in WFMU in a hurricane...
  8:25pm
Julie:

David you are most kind (blush)
  8:25pm
Parq:

Y'know, Cheri, I always used to wonder, when you invoked "the Cake", whether you meant the girl-group or were sarcastically corrupting the name of the more recent group known just as Cake. Nice to have that cleared up.
  8:26pm
Alex in Astoria:

Wow, is this Siouxsie ? What is this track?!
  8:26pm
Julie:

Cake are imposters. We only care about THE CAKE
  8:26pm
lisanne:

love this siouxie track..fits my mood to a t right now..
  8:26pm
cp:

what Siouxsie song is this?
  8:27pm
Julie:

The creatures. (with siouxsie) slipping away
  8:27pm
marc:

Clay an Julie, u staying on till Nachum?
  8:27pm
longtime comments reader:

cheri is texas scott, and i know the hurricane went nowhere near texas, so i didn't get her storm damage comment
  8:27pm
lisanne:

oh yeah forgot about them..it was her and hubby budgie
  8:28pm
Clay:

  8:28pm

  8:29pm

  8:29pm

  8:31pm
Parq:

By the way, some buses are running in the city and at least in Manhattan, they are free for the rest of Sunday. Just confirmed that on the MTA website.
  8:31pm
cp:

the creatures track was called "slipping away?"
  8:31pm
Julie:

yes I am armed with cherry coke and goldfish! and fig newtons for later
  8:32pm
Parq:

I was under the impression that Cheri was a reincarnated Radd Man. One never knows, do one?
  8:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

St. Clay and St. Julie!
Thank you so much for holding down the fort so much today! By midnight it will have been 14 of the 24 hours this Sunday!
  8:34pm
courage:

Never mind my doubts about emergency proclamations and such. If Julie and jayray hit it off, this show will have a point.

  8:48pm
Ike:

This Polish punk rock song is GREAT!
  8:48pm
Julie:

I don't wish I had some or Dutch rap
  8:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

The Polish stuff is great. Is this 80s/Solidarity era?
  8:50pm

"Shoot em in the back now, Auschwitz Bop"

Third Policeman:

Later I'd say, thought there's a great line about our imagination is our freedom.
  8:51pm
PMD:

How about Chinese rap? Some kind other than Spanish or French, both of which I've heard. And Nigerian I think.
  8:51pm
Third Policeman:

Translation: YOu are way off.
  8:52pm
Julie:

THIS mix of music is so bizarre...I hope you like it.
It is just polish punk classics no year indicated
  8:52pm
jayray:

I like where this is going.
  8:52pm
Julie:

Nothing is more freeform than DJ's who have wildly different tastes.
  8:52pm
jayray:

I would do that.
  8:53pm
alberto:

oh, teddy...so subtle
  8:53pm

  8:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Clay: Teddy was among the slickest Sounds of Philly.
This is the official make-up for Joe McGs absence yesterday!
  8:59pm
Ike:

Hey @PMD, several FMU DJs played funny Chinese rap several years ago, but now I'm not sure of the name of the group. I thought it was called "The 527" but searches reveal nothing. I must have the numbers wrong. It was "The <three-digit number>" -- anybody remember this?
  8:59pm
Parq:

Mwah, PDM, glad you could make it. Third Policeman, I am a big Myles fan and totally dig your name.
  9:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

Summer "Breeze"...!
  9:01pm
