Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from September 27, 2011 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

The Ex  Live from Butlins Resort, All Tomorrows Parties, Minehead UK   Favoriting     December, 2010: from the circus-tent atmosphere of All Tomorrows Parties at the Butlins resort in Minehead, England, Brian brought back assorted live recordings that will be popping up in the weeks ahead on various WFMU shows. The Godspeed You Black Emperor-curated weekend featured a lineup that included the likes of Cluster, Black Dice, and Neurosis to, amazingly enough, Weird Al Yankovic, but it was Holland's legendary Ex that got even the resort workers to stop dead in their tracks while they played. For over 30 years the anarchic punk band has roamed a wilderness of free sounds that have included collaborations with everyone from Tom Cora, Han Bennink, Getatchew Mekuria and more; they've performed live on Brian's show in 2006 previously, and headlined an incredible WFMU 50th Anniversary show in 2008 live at Lincoln Center that brought over an arsenal of kindred spirit Ethiopian musicians. Today's broadcast from Minehead showcases new singer/guitarist Arnold deBoer and finds the Ex as a quartet in total attack mode! Many thanks to Scott Williams for the multitrack post mix. More info at the Ex's site. Special thanks to Deb and Barry from ATP and the Ex for access to the festival and recordings.    2:04:30 (Pop-up)

  3:26pm
Marmalade Kitty:

I agree with you guys
  3:27pm
Cheri Pi:

Gorgoroth doing one of those post-mortem duets (Al la Nat Cole) with HarryNilllson.

  3:30pm
still b/p:

That's the second time Lou has disappointed me. Saw him in '76 or '77, and for a live show it was a yawn.
  3:31pm
still b/p:

..So I'll be ready if he wants to disappoint me again in 2046.
  3:31pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

s b/p, that's probably when he had the two rock guitar gods thing going ala Lynyrd Skynyrd. That just seemed wrong to me.
  3:32pm
Cheri Pi:

This is my first Lou Reed disappointment, and it stings. it really does.
  3:32pm
ex-girlfriend:

Mash up EX with Madonna.
  3:32pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hey Brian, everyone!

Looks like I missed a furor over a Lou Reed/Metallica mix! And "W i L d N e i l" seems even more W i L d today!
  3:33pm
Domenic:

ahhh...he's just a dude from Long Island....it's gonna be ok
  3:33pm
Cheri Pi:

After the Kinks, Watery Love is the best rock band on earth. I hope Metallica doesn't come knocking on their door.
  3:33pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I think Neil put a double-meth creamer in his coffee today
  3:34pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

don't worry, Cheri, they probably don't even have a door to knock on
  3:34pm
glenn:

didn't skynyrd have three guitarists?
  3:34pm
Frisco Kid:

Four words I never wanted to read: Nancy Grace Wardrobe Malfunction. Thanks, Internet.
  3:36pm
My Buddy:

A DALLas TEXAS ORIGinal!!
  3:36pm
glenn:

au contraire, cheri pi. after the kinks, moby grape is the best rock band on earth. 40 years after their demise and all.
  3:37pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

yeah, glenn, but the approach was pretty similar on that live Lou Reed album with Steve Hunter and...who else...not willing to google...
  3:37pm
Carmichael:

Yes Glenn, Skynyrd had 3 guitars, 4 less than Molly Hatchet.
  3:39pm
Cheri Pi:

thankfully Skip Spence is safe from the clutches of James Hetfield.
  3:39pm
Marmalade Kitty:

I wish i'd got to see the Ramones more than aything..I think
  3:40pm
glenn:

two should be enough. actually, moby grape had three guitarists too. hmmmmm. i am hoist on my own petard. i think skip would have scared the shit out of james hetfield, actually.
  3:41pm
Cheri Pi:

It's a shame then, that Skip cant out an end to Jame's duet-hungry bloodlust.
  3:42pm
Cheri Pi:

"don't DUET me bro!"
  3:43pm
Cheri Pi:

Hey, is this the same band Christmas that might have opened for Husker Du in the 80's?
  3:45pm
BT:

prolly? Boston. Pre-Combustible Edison members. James from Yo La Tengo was in there at one point too.
  3:45pm
Frisco Kid:

Yep Cheri, same band. Saw 'em in the 80s.
  3:46pm
BSI:

...that's 4 less Petards than Christ on a Crutch...... what?
  3:46pm
bill:

Lou Reed with Steve Wagner etc was a yawn? That was probably the same lineup as R&R Animal, an absolute knock out live album

  4:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: You're the one who's not fond of dub, I take it? ;)

Brian played a lot of it during Singles Going Steady--some of us enjoyed that, other not so much. But I loved the chance to hear some on this show!
  4:26pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I know dub from bud but that's about IT
  4:26pm

Nordens fåglar:

A Cooper, scary stuff; same day I bought the killer-album I got a serious cold with fever, and every time (even now) I hear this track i get pseudo-sick (sick)
  4:45pm
the glowing one:

I'm having a vision of 80s type figures in freaky black and white costumes moving spastically on stage and hitting their synthizers while performing this song... "8"
  4:49pm
W i L d N e i l:

This song hurts.

  5:09pm
Unclear on the concept:

Cool -- they have rides at Butlins Resort!
  5:10pm
jaycjay:

But there's been copy-and-paste, and potential related fail, since the first time a "xerox machine" was used in conjunction with scissors and... paste.
  5:10pm
BT:

Weird Al, while professing his fandom for WFMU (loves Scharpling!), didnt give us recording permish, the stage setup was like, as complex as My Bloody Valentine's....
  5:13pm
bill:

thx BT :(
  5:16pm
Parq:

In fairness to Al, since most of his act involves parodies of copyrighted songs, he's probably not in a position legally to grant broadcast authority. Some of the parodies he proforms on stage can't even be used on his recordings.
  5:17pm
bill:

MBV didn't give permission either as I remember. Something about complex stage setups?
  5:28pm
jeff-m:

sounds great man
  5:29pm
moose:

sounds great! the ex w/ tom cora at maxwell's years ago was one of the best shows i ever seen- anyone remember that?
  5:31pm
Parq:

Does anybody know if the bass player on this date is the one who played with them at that '08 Lincoln Center show? That guy was the heart and the soul of the band that night.
  5:33pm
BT:

Colin played bass at Lincoln Center but Andy doubled up on baritone guitar for this set (Colin also doubles on sound, he was a Dog Faced Herman too)
  5:42pm
moose:

dog faced hermans also did killer shows back then- i've just learned that this all happened 20 years ago? gulp
  5:59pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks for introducing me to The Ex! Now I know "X", and "The Ex"!!

Have a great night!
  6:02pm
