@chuck Yeah it's a bitch, it just takes ungodly amounts of repetition I think. If you just stick to spoken Mandarin you'll do better. I was able to go to markets in Beijing and understand spoken prices and say "tai guile!" ("too expensive!") and walk away and then they spaz and then you can start a real negotiation :)

I was in Beijing in 2001 and the rock n roll bands were from the Philippines! Playing covers. Some good stuff, like Red Hot Chili Peppers. But I never did find the homegrown rock scene - this was a major disappointment :-(
