Cosmas Magaya photographed by ethnomusicologist Paul Berliner in the 1970s
and a more recent photo with a peek inside the mbira.

Cosmas Magaya is one of the greatest master mbira players of Zimbabwe, a renowned keeper and teacher of deeply spiritual centuries old Shona traditions. He famously collaborated with ethnomusicologist Paul Berliner: He's heard on Berliner's classic Nonesuch Explorer field recording LP Shona Mbira Music and helped Berliner research the equally classic book Soul of Mbira. In Zimbabwe he is leader of the esteemed mbira ensemble Mhuri yekwaMagaya.

This great master is here in New York for series of mbira, percussion and singing workshops and concerts from October 21 to 27.

Cosmas will perform at a house concert in Brooklyn on Sunday from 5-7 pm. For info on this concert and remaining workshops, and to make reservations, email norabalaban AT gmail DOT com.

  6:28pm Caryn:

I'm kind of curious to know if Cosmas always plays the same kind of mbira (as there are different types and sizes of mbira and sansa) or has he ever played for example the gwenambira?
  6:34pm Marmalade Kitty:

I'd love to get kitted out with some of these instruments :)

Cosmas and his mbira worked some magic here--just finished installing a new sink faucet with no leaks on the first attempt! Unprecedented!
  7:23pm Marmalade Kitty:

nice one John!
  7:55pm Your DJ:

@Jim B if you're still around - I don't think Cosmas would've played with Mapfumo - but according to Banning Eyre, Mapfumo's biographer, Mapfumo based four songs on songs found on the Nonesuch Explorer CD that Cosmas played on, "Shona Mbira Music". See Banning's article here: http://tiny.cc/k16jo.
  8:25pm Marmalade Kitty:

great stuff here! Mr. Weisburg thanks
  8:45pm Your DJ:
