  9:01am A Phlebotomist Writes:

That 100% sure does look cute.

Your serve, Parq.

  9:02am Van in Dallas:

Hi Doug and all...another workday kicking off the Free form music way :)
  9:02am A Phlebotomist Writes:

200% dc pat that medication seems to working just fine.
  9:02am glenn:

dc pat's beside himself.
  9:03am listener james from westwood:

phlebotomist, i will be visiting one of your colleagues the week after next to have a bit o' the red red krovvy skimmed off for some testing.
  9:04am A Phlebotomist Writes:

LJfW Plenty of fluids beforehand unless it is a fasting test.
  9:04am glenn:

horrorshow.
  9:05am Doug Schulkind:

That's a lotta percent, dc pat!

How's it going, Van? Glad you're here

Phlebby, you will provide the "dry wit" during today's procedings.

Hello Mr. Glenn, our Northern neighb.
  9:05am A Phlebotomist Writes:

glenn horrowshow - Clockwork Orange?
  9:06am still b/p:

If the doc slips into "Singing In The Rain"....duck out, or at least duck and cover your gulliver.
  9:08am Parq:

DrumSum, I'm going to get me some of that tannis root like in 'Rosemary's Baby', and then I can say "Tannis, anyone?"
  9:09am Doug Schulkind:

Parq, have you ever dug the soundtrack to Rosemary's Baby? Wow! Double wow! Utter brilliance from Krzysztof Komeda.
  9:09am glenn:

g'day mateys.
  9:11am glenn:

oooh. what's the best soundtrack ever? thoughts?
  9:12am texas scott:

love beans cornbread!
  9:13am ndbob:

wow glenn.. so many to choose from - hard to say
  9:13am 200% dc pat:

Wizard of Oz
  9:14am glenn:

stick your neck out ndbob.
  9:14am Van in Dallas:

making me hungry
  9:14am Doug Schulkind:

Very possibly Sun Ran (Herman "Sonny" Blount") and Yusef Lateef ("William Huddleston) on this Eugene Wright number!
  9:15am glenn:

i know it's a bit of a cliche, but i love the good, the bad and the ugly.
  9:17am 200% dc pat:

I was gonna say, or one of Morricone's
  9:18am david:

glenn, morricone would get a few slots on my top 10. his score for The Thing is so awesome.
  9:18am ndbob:

hmm.. best soundtrack i've heard lately is to "just for fun" - from 1963 - lots of great popcorn, teeners, etc.
  9:19am david:

does Purple Rain count as a soundtrack?
  9:19am Michael:

From Morricone I'd take Once Upon A Time in the West. Also a great film.
  9:21am glenn:

casting henry fonda as the villain? pretty genius.
  9:22am Doug Schulkind:

Altman's use of Leonard Cohen's songs as the soundtrack to "McCabe & Mrs. Miller" is one my favorite uses of music in film.

Wrote about it here:
http://wfmu.org/Playlists/Doug/doug.980717a.html
  9:22am 200% dc pat:

there's some pretty wild music in some of Kurozawa's older films--No-inspired stuff.
  9:23am Michael:

A great great villain too. Jim Jarmusch uses music very well. His latest used Boris to great effect I thought.
  9:23am listener james from westwood:

morricone performed in, i want to say '03, at radio city, leading an orchestra while films that featured his music played on the big screen. still kicking myself for missing it.
  9:23am glenn:

if you like cats and music - http://thekittencovers.tumblr.com/
  9:24am Parq:

If I thought it over, I'd agonize over a bazillian choices, so I'm going impulsive and voting for Franz Waxman's score for "The Bride of Frankenstein."
  9:25am Parq:

Oh, and I am *so* going to have 'Papa Did the Chicken" for the father-daughter dance at my kid's wedding.
  9:25am 200% dc pat:

oh shit! I forgot my all time favorite: The 10th Victim music by Piero Piccioni
  9:25am glenn:

i saw bugs bunny on broadway; bugs cartoons played behind the toronto symphony orchestra, it was fantastic. don't get the brazilian, parq, it'll hurt.
  9:26am david:

Also would put Goblin's SDK for Suspiria up there.
  9:27am 200% dc pat:

10th Victim has some of the most unusual organ music I've heard with weird skat singing by some unknown woman. the movie itself rules too.

I kind of liked the score for the Shining as well
  9:30am Michael:

More importantly, it had Ursula Andress!
  9:30am A Phlebotomist Writes:

I refer you to 09:05 for soundtracks. Using only some non original material. Several sub sections here including sexchanging composers.
  9:30am fishmonkeystew:

Good morning all! Thanks for the good wishes for the Northeast, James. Unfortunately, we've got no juice in my neighborhood (not until Sunday night, they claim!). Fortunately, we do have power and internet at work. Unfortunately, I have to be at work to enjoy it.

My fav soundtrack is Ascenseur pour l'Échafaud, by Miles Davis. And what a cool film!
  9:31am glenn:

orchestra muffling, no?
  9:32am A Phlebotomist Writes:

Great or little Auk Professeur?
  9:32am Doug Schulkind:

A good thought, but it's spelled "ork"!!!
  9:33am 200% dc pat:

Michael: excellent point, I really dig marcello mastroianni in it too, totally cool with bleached hair.
  9:34am fishmonkeystew:

Hey Doug, do you know if there is a recording of the Quaker City Jazz Festival (in Philadelphia) from 1967 floating around out there? Preferably vinyl, but any audio format will be acceptable. I've searched to no avail. It's on a friend's Xmas wish list.
  9:35am Doug Schulkind:

Jeez, fishmonkeystew, STILL no power? That's abysmal. I haven't seen that Phill fest recording. I'll keep my nose open for it.
  9:38am 200% dc pat:

holy crap, this Romica Puceanu piece is amazing. Any background?
  9:38am fishmonkeystew:

Ya, that's what I get for living in the sticks. I live in Union, CT. It's the smallest town (population wise) in CT with approximately 850 residents. And 97% are without power according to CL&P. On the bright side, my electric bill will be cheaper this month.
  9:40am listener james from westwood:

terrible to hear, fishmonkeystew. it's really been irene pt. 2 for so many people. makes me think solar's not the worst way to go.
  9:40am Doug Schulkind:

Get the Romica Puceanu here:

http://tinyurl.com/3jjuvj6
  9:41am glenn:

i bet it won't. they'll find a way to get more money out of you.
  9:42am Doug Schulkind:

I posted a different Romica Puceanu LP on the Motherlode a while ago. I don't know if the link is still good:

http://tinyurl.com/yeg7fps
  9:43am 200% dc pat:

and I think this is only the beginning, this winter portends to be pretty harsh...
  9:44am Michael:

fishmonkeystew - I know it's bad out that way. My daughter is in school in Western Mass and classes have been canceled all week, resuming Monday. It's not the snow apparently, although they got a lot. It's the danger from the trees and branches that have fallen all over the campus and the small city.
  9:46am still b/p:

Billowatt mystieries: I was out of the country for 13 days last April. My electric bill for the month showed almost no change from the previous few months. Never got a good explanation, though I tried more than once.
  9:46am ndbob:

we have had a pretty decent fall - by north dakota standards - no snow yet
  9:48am Doug Schulkind:

This Pourhashimi track is on a wicked good comp from listener JK's new Kala Bandar records:

http://kalabandarrecords.com/
  9:49am jill:

Like i said yesterday on Amanda's show, I'm still without power but GTDS radio always brightens my day! Thanks Drummer!
  9:50am Doug Schulkind:

Oh Jill! So awful. I'll try to keep y'all warm...
  9:52am fishmonkeystew:

Michael, we lost power on Saturday afternoon at about 3:30pm. On Sunday morning when I got up there were downed power lines in every direction around my home. Also, several downed tree limbs and a couple of smashed power poles. I guess Mother Nature decided on "trick" rather than "treat" this year. Luckily, I work for an electrical contractor and was able to borrow a generator for lights, water, refrigerator, and heat. No hot water, but we're getting by. No internet or cable, but that's probably good for us. Southern Massachusetts got hammered, too. I live right on the border and have been hearing stories all week.

I agree with Jill-GTDS makes everything just a bit better.
  9:54am still b/p:

Wow....Map of the CT messmurement:
http://outage.cl-p.com/outage/outagemap.aspx
  9:57am glenn:

sounds like it shoul be called dis - connecticut.
  9:57am listener james from westwood:

guy i know in western nj, hard by the delaware water gap & waaay out in the sticks, had picked the day of the snow to move. that didn't happen. he's been w/o power at the old house since then and i haven't heard from him at the new place, near scranton, since earlier this week! hope he was able to get the truck outta there.
  9:59am A Phlebotomist Writes:

Bud Powell would like some space please!
  10:00am trish:

  10:01am joe:

'ello folks
Doug thank you for a very enjoyable hour so far.
  10:02am jk:

mornin Doug, just tuning in so I missed hippy. thanks for the link!
  10:03am ndbob:

  10:03am Doug Schulkind:

Hey hey jk! Thank YOU for tunes. Here's another crucial link for Brother JK:

http://jessekaminsky.com/intercontinental/
  10:07am Doug Schulkind:

Say it IS so, Joe.
  10:09am fishmonkeystew:

Dis-Connecticut. hehehe. Unfortunately, my wife doesn't think it's so funny. ;)
  10:10am Doug Schulkind:

So sorry for you and Q-SS.
  10:15am Van in Dallas:

Wow, My thoughts are with you folks way up there without power, etc.
  10:19am Doug Schulkind:

Van, you endured HOW MANY straight days over 100°F? We still feel sorry for you.
  10:21am fishmonkeystew:

No worries! There are others much worse off then we are. Besides, I've got a full fun weekend ahead. Masquerade jam session tonight in Putnam, CT (at Glimpse of Gaia, if you are close by and want to join in), my show in the AM (www.whus.org/listen-live at 9:00am <----shamless plug), viewing of Over Your Cities Grass Will Grow at the Cable Car in Providence on Sunday (http://www.cablecarcinema.com/index.cfm?p=movie&id=Over%5FYour%5FCities%5FGrass%5FWill%5FGrow), and then going to see Slim Cessna's Auto Club at the Providence Social Club after some tasty Indian food.

This is some killer rockabilly.
  10:24am Van in Dallas:

a bunch :)
  10:25am joe:

It is So It is So
Today is the supposed golden day that all power companies are giving their customers as to when their power is supposed to come on :)
  10:26am Van in Dallas:

I see the Did you remember El Diablo Tun Tun? site is still going strong. So there's that good news. :)
  10:27am fishmonkeystew:

100°F + temps are awful. Glad you made it through, Van. Didn't you get all that rain, too? Mother Nature seems pretty pissed off.
  10:28am Van in Dallas:

Oh no. Severe drought here in Texas. Worst ever, I think I heard.
  10:30am Doug Schulkind:

Van, speaking of El Diablo Tun Tun, keep your ears open for the next set...
  10:31am 200% dc pat:

Momma nature definitely pissed.. I'm coaching my sons soccer team and we've played about 2 matches this fall out of about 7 because of all the rain.
  10:32am Doug Schulkind:

For this album, Tuli Kupferberg took advertisements from the newspaper and read them as poems. The kind of "found text" work our own Kenny Goldsmith is doing today, to much acclaim.
  10:35am Bob:

Kuperfberg's name always makes me think of the songwriting credit for "The 10 Commandments" on one of the Fugs albums: "By Tuli Kupferberg and God."
  10:35am ndbob:

though i do wish Tuli knew how to pronounce "Oregon".
  10:38am Doug Schulkind:

Aura GONE!
  10:46am annie:

this is the part where kitchen makes me turn down the sound..
  10:48am Doug Schulkind:

Hello Annie, (goodbye Annie). Oddly, on Monday during Destination Out's premiere broadcast, they played this 20-minute Japanese guitar skronk thrash improve piece—and the size of the listening audience INCREASED over those 20 minutes. And it was a beastly piece.

I love you guys.
  10:52am bruce in boston:

Wow I am finally listening online again after long mysterious computer refusal. Sounds Great! This makes my Friday despite B.C. football slaughter...
  10:54am annie:

it's still on, no one has grumbled loudly yet..
  10:56am Gregory:

Allusion: In the old Monty Python skit about the Piranha Brothers, one of them was referred to as "fair... cruel but fair. He nailed my 'ead to a table once. But 'e assured me that I 'ad transgressed 'is law. So it was a fair cop." (more or less)
  10:59am Doug Schulkind:

Come drown your tears in our musical beers, Bruce in B.

Gregory: THANK YOU!
  11:00am listener james from westwood:

ndbob, what is the correct pronunciation for oregon? "AR-ə-gon"? "ORE-ə-gon"? "AHR-ə-gən"? i was wrong in the past on nevada (apparently nə-VAH-da).
  11:00am monica:

freddy! now there's a voice that'll cuts through a thick fog. enjoying immensely, doug.
  11:00am Doug Schulkind:

This one's for you, Van.
  11:04am Doug Schulkind:

Monica, I heard you play Freddy recently and went hunting. What an amazing performer. She died at 26, fer chrissakes.
  11:07am ndbob:

or a gun or ahr a gun
  11:08am ndbob:

never knew until i went to college there
  11:08am Hugo:

Did I see the man Tuli on the playlist? That is one helluva album, but my Italian pressing is a bit dodgy ...

And the Hopper thing. That was out on a fairly short-lived Oslo label..
  11:09am Van in Dallas:

Oh. Thanks by the way Doug. I'm working away and not able to closely monitor comments here :)
  11:09am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks to Listener James for introducing the schwa ("ə") to the conversation.
  11:12am listener james from westwood:

because sometimes, you just don't want to be bothered with all those pesky vowel sounds, especially on a friday.
  11:12am fishmonkeystew:

Doug, that Japanese skronk piece on Monday was AWESOME. And thanks for the El Diablo Tun Tun tip. I just filled my thumb drive to capacity.
  11:14am Elias:

Hi Doug!
  11:15am Doug Schulkind:

My pleasure, fishmonkeystew. I was floored when I found that mirror site.

If you don't know the reference: I found a blog that has complete reanimated the old dormant blog El Diablo Tun Tun. It is here:

http://didyouremembereldiablotuntun.blogspot.com/

Howdy Elias!
  11:17am Hugo:

Sorry to hear about power losses on the east coast. That Saturday in Manhattan was COLD, sludgy and windy, but we were warmed by the vibes of an evening raga at the Dream House. Back here on the west coast, rainy, but mild.
  11:20am trish:

I find it a bit discombobulating when winter jumps forward south of the 49th parallel while it's comparatively balmy to the north.
  11:21am ndbob:

i do have to go - great show doug - catch the rest on the archive
  11:24am Doug Schulkind:

So long, ndbob, excellent listening (as usual)!
  11:24am listener james from westwood:

later on, bob; stay warm!
  11:25am Doug Schulkind:

Hello Sister Trish.
  11:27am trish:

Sunny greetings from the relative north.
  11:29am Carmichael:

Happy Friday, everyone. Clear and sunny (and cold) here in northern CA. I like the soundtrack from More. Pat, you're technically Double Pat today.
  11:30am Doug Schulkind:

Ah Northern Calif. One of my favorite places. Happy day, Carmichael.
  11:31am Carmichael:

Have you been out this way, Doug? You've never mentioned it before, to my recollection.
  11:32am Artie:

You can use a club Or A Gun. Good to have a memory trick for these things. See also: She a threw an Apple Atcha.
  11:32am Van in Dallas:

B side has been quite nice so far sir Doug. I think it could rightfully challenge that A side for GTDS supremacy this day.
  11:33am Doug Schulkind:

Well my sister lives in Boikley. I've spent many ridiculously great times in the East Bay.

Try to pronounce Atchafalaya, Artie. (Accent on the SECOND syllable!)
  11:34am Doug Schulkind:

Gold star to anyone who can guess where this set is going to end up...
  11:35am Carmichael:

Aahh, Berserkly. Right down the highway, and ripe for great fun all the time.
  11:37am Carmichael:

Hopefully Doug, you'll end up with either Phil Ochs or Maddy Prior.
  11:38am Van in Dallas:

I'm guessing it's not going to be Mike & Sally Oldfield
  11:39am Artie:

Le Pétomane?!?
  11:40am Doug Schulkind:

I adore Phil, but did he sing with Sunny? You KNOW I love Maddy, but did she perform with a brother? Nope, not Oldfiields.
  11:41am fishmonkeystew:

The Osmands? :D
  11:41am Doug Schulkind:

fishmonkeystew, you are thisclose... (Wish I had thought of them.)
  11:42am still b/p:

Vernon and Irene Castle will dance?
  11:42am Artie:

Donnie & Marie?
  11:42am Doug Schulkind:

still b/p: Big Smile
  11:43am Van in Dallas:

oooh the suspense
  11:43am Carmichael:

Phil never sang with his sister professionally. Maddy played with Tim Hart, June Tabor and some great stuff with Martin Carthy.
  11:43am Brian in UK:

Hello sensation seekers, have you seen this, Doug?
http://www.theagilmore.net/welcome.cfm
  11:44am listener james from westwood:

howdy trish and carmichael!
  11:44am Carmichael:

Hey James.
  11:45am trish:

Hiya
  11:45am Brian in UK:

Barbara & Huey Lewis?
  11:45am Carmichael:

Whitey & Warner Herzog?
  11:46am Alex in Illinois:

How about Samy y Sandra Sandoval? Hermano y Hermana de Panama!

Love Maddy as well. As for Sally Oldfield, I really liked some of her single albums, but much preferred Maggie Reilly singing with Mike Oldfield.

Netflix recently lost 800,000 customers, careless.
