Listener comments!

  12:04pm
Cecile:

sounds awesome, Duane. I hope you brought some disco burners. Need some uplift.
  12:04pm
dale:

hey mr. deejay - love that oddie song. shades of gene pitney
  12:08pm
Cecile:

Equals cover?
  12:09pm
Duane:

Hi Everybody. Yeah that's an Equals cover from '73
  12:12pm
Cecile:

nice version!
  12:12pm
Stevel:

Cecile: Gettin' funky enough for ya?
  12:12pm
Cheri Pi:

the Equals have been coming up everywhere lately.
  12:13pm
Cecile:

I think so, stevel!
  12:15pm
Loren:

Good day, great tunes... thanks Duane!
  12:17pm
hypehat:

this is a bit of what you want!
  12:19pm
Cecile:

Wow, another great disco song about NYC - like Native New Yorker.
  12:20pm
Nathan:

This makes me wanna roller boogie...
  12:26pm
?:

Bust a move, Duane!
  12:27pm
Loren:

Duane, your bag of goodies are putting Santa to shame!
  12:28pm
Loren:

"is"
  12:28pm
Duane:

Ho,Ho, Ho!!
  12:30pm
Cecile:

I can't take this pressure no more....
  12:31pm
Cecile:

or whatever that Expanding Belly song was...
  12:32pm
Cecile:

ah, yes. the golden days of bands named after concentration camp slang. May the music remain, but the trend never return.
  12:33pm
hypehat:

"Bill Oddie"?
  12:34pm
Cecile:

not the Bill Oddie you're thinking of, hypehat. Different guy.
  12:35pm
Cecile:

your family, Duane. wow.
  12:41pm
Daniel:

Strictly speaking, Spandau wasn't a concentration camp. Anybody else besides Joy Division?
  12:43pm
Tom shad:

What up D ?
  12:43pm
Duane:

Tom: What's up man??
  12:45pm
Tom shad:

TuNing in finally ! Let's do some music together !
  12:46pm
still b/p:

Aside from the character of the lead vocal, It's No Secret sounded like something a Dan Hicks and Amy Winehouse collboration would have led to.
  12:47pm
Neg-guh-tor:

Great show Duane! Ever heard of the disco girl group called 'Mizz'? Got that at a thrift store yesterday. Who did you say died?
  12:47pm
Duane:

That sounds like a plan, Tom! I'm in town for a while. Sounds fun man! hit me up!
  12:48pm
kata:

'morning people. love the horns on this Jackie Shane song!
  12:50pm
Duane:

Neg-guh-tor:Hey, is that the one on Casablanca? That's a good one!
still b/p: Interesting./// I like that analogy
  12:51pm
Neg-guh-tor:

Is Jackie Shane a man?
  12:51pm
nyc:

Jackie Shane is incredible! Anyone know if his singles have ever been compiled/anthologized?
  12:51pm
Cecile:

eh, you're probably right Daniel.
I'm probably conflating them in my mind with all the bands named after Manson stuff. I should clean out my brain.
  12:52pm
eric:

Man, another great show so far! I don't have much music like this in my collection, but I always love your show. Maybe I'll have to get some!
  12:52pm
Cecile:

nyc, someone else may have been more lucky, but I haven't been able to find a thing.
  12:53pm
Duane:

nEG-GUH-TOR:Yeah He's a man..you should google him..incredible story/character
  12:53pm
Cecile:

Neg-at-tor, yes, Jackie is a man. From what I can determine, he was a man who preferred androgny years before Bowie or Sylvester. And what Duane said.
  12:54pm
Cecile:

this hammer sounds like singer from the Guess Who fronting Chase or something.
  12:55pm
dale:

god, this hammer has me air guitaring and drumming and swinging hair i don't have anymore!!
  12:56pm
Duane:

neg-guh-tor: J-1 from Dam-funk's band master-blaster passed away two days ago while they were on tour. Great guy!
  12:57pm
Cecile:

that sucks Duane. Don't know if you were into Patrice O'Neal, but he passed very recently, too. What a shame.
  12:59pm
Mike East:

@Cecile - he was really funny. So young, too. Tragic.
  12:59pm
Duane:

Cecile: Yeah, I saw that too..really, really sux:(
  1:02pm
nyc:

Actually, looks like there used to be a Jackie Shane disc called "All the Singles Plus the Concert," but it's OOP and who knows how legit it was anyway.
  1:03pm
Cecile:

Hrm, it sounds like a job for one of those awesome reissue labels.
  1:04pm
jonathan:

great, great show.
  1:04pm
Matt:

duane what song did you say was from a touissant produced album?
  1:04pm
Cecile:

CBC did an interview a few years back.
  1:07pm
Duane:

Matt: Lou Johnson
Cecille: Did you ever find any Sons of Robin Stone?
  1:08pm
Cecile:

no i didn't. I wasn't looking, but thanks for reminding me!
I did find a DL of Lou Johnson I gotta get tonight.
  1:13pm
Cecile:

Ha! Steve Arrington. Loved that cover of his solo album - him as a Greek statue with Gheri curl!
  1:15pm
Neg-guh-tor:

Yeah, the Mizz is on Casablanca. Can't find much on them. Thanks for the info Duane. You rule! You play music? What's your medium? I'm a drummer.
  1:17pm
Cecile:

For your delectation:

  1:27pm
still b/p:

I wouldn't know a Bieber song if I found it in my breakfast bowl, but I saw part of a store commercial with various adult workers scah-reeching like crazed jr. high teeny-boppers as he wandered through...and I laughed.
  1:29pm
Matt:

Bieber's music isn't so bad for the most part. A lot of it is produced by The-Dream
  1:33pm
Cecile:

It kind of heartens me when something like that or Josh Groban happens. It's saying that even crowd-pleasing music isnt' getting heard on commercial radio. That shows how out of touch commercial radio has become.
  1:38pm
J J:

Never even heard of Josh Groban.
  1:41pm
Cecile:

he's an operatic style pop singer who was an internet sensation. Sold a million records without radio. Has his cult following called "the Grobanites". To his credit, he is quite self-effacing and sends himself up a lot on various TV shows.
  1:41pm
Cecile:

And he only got on the radio after he sold out a US tour and sold a ton of CDs.
  1:42pm
Cecile:

my husband's co-worker is a Grobanite, so I know tha whole story...
  1:45pm
J J:

Okay, clip of him from Tim & Eric show would probably be even funnier if you're a fan.
  1:48pm
Cecile:

he does stuff like that all the time. I like his sense of humor, although I probably couldn't sit through a recording of his.
  1:50pm
Duane:

Josh Groban was on Jimmy Kimmel and he did a bit where he sang Kanye West Tweets in his operatic overwrought style..funny. Horrible muzak!
  1:50pm
james stacheroni:

always loved this Gloria Jones song!
  1:51pm
Mike East:

@Duane, I think I saw that clip in a cab. Pretty funny.
  1:51pm
Cecile:

Duane, that was hysterical.
  1:54pm
Cecile:

Did your dad go to school with King Stitt, Duane? :D
  1:57pm
Duane:

Cecille: My dad Knew him, but they didn't go to school together. He went to St. Ann's with John Holt, my Uncle Derrick, Boris, Monty ALexander and Hopeton Lewis
  1:58pm
Cecile:

hahahahhahahahahha.
  1:58pm
Mike East:

Monty Alexander comes into our studio every once in a while. Really nice dude. Always a pleasure to chat with him.
  1:59pm
Cecile:

Does he know Larry McDonald (reggae guy who put out his first record at age 70)?
  2:00pm
Duane:

Dunno..the next time he comes into town we'll have to ask him that. That's why I wanted him to stick around and come on my show:)
  2:01pm
?:

I thought this Howlin Wolf record was a Doug Schulkind exclusive . . . ;)
  2:01pm
Cecile:

Larry did one track where he sang almost acapella with splashing waves in a grotto in Jamaica. Called Mento in 3.
  2:02pm
Detroit Mac:

Still here... still lurking today.
  2:05pm
Cecile:

well, hate to leave but lunch calls. Back in a while.
  2:05pm
kata:

can you tell mercury's in retrograde? skipping CDs, frozen computer, my car's in the shop, etc. Also missed the last half hour of music because I'm at work and had to chat. Wah...
  2:06pm
fishmonkeystew:

Pinball. Niiiiiiiice. Thanks, Duane.
  2:07pm
Duane:

kata: hahaha! I know, i feel like those Family Circus gremlins are partying up in this piece!
  2:11pm
james stacheroni:

Just discogs'd Honeybus to learn that Pete Dello was in the group. No wonder I like them so much! Thanks Duane.
  2:11pm
nyc:

Cecile & co.: The Jackie Shane CBC story is really good:

http://www.cbc.ca/radio2/itm-listenagain/2011/02/17/listen-again-i-got-mine-the-story-of-jackie-shane/index.html
  2:14pm
kata:

ooh, thanks @nyc, I will listen to that later for sure.
  2:21pm
nyc:

I never get tired of this Johnny Boy song!
  2:37pm
james stacheroni:

YES! This Tony Green produced slinky disco track was on my first dj mix with Porkchop! Montreal!
  2:39pm
Duane:

James: Yes, this is a slinky, slinky one:) Move that swinger, platos retreat type disco
  2:41pm
kata:

dang, work keeps getting in the way of me listening to this show.. gonna have to hit the archives again. What I did hear was superb, thanks Duane!
  2:42pm
Kat:

What Kata said.
  2:44pm
Matt:

new listener to your program duane but it's amazing. i'm a huge fan of 80s disco, boogie, funk etc. you/re hitting all of my pleasure centers
  2:46pm
Duane:

Thanks Matt! Kat!! and the 'Stache!!! James you around this weekend?
  2:48pm
Duane:

Kata:)
  2:49pm
james stacheroni:

I would love to swing by Biblioball - I've had friends perform there before and know it to be a great time - but I've gotta play a slow jams loft party in ze 'burg.
  2:51pm
Duane:

james: Aww, too bad. Sounds like fun! Hit me up anyway if you're around
