Listener comments!

  7:09am Brian in UK:

Stamp me vitals, if it ain't 'Gentleman' Doug Schulkind & his travellin' music show. Funny thing is the music dun the travellin' & he stays where he is.
  8:16am Doug Schulkind:

Actually, Brian, I have done the travelling and the music stayed put. I pre-recorded the show and will be doing the playlist from a new location!
  8:26am Brian in UK:

Sounds interesting. Well, I'm ready, the sun is out and ready. I've lost my ampersand. Good news is that I found Kool's 'Spirit of the Boogie' That earthy roar of vinyl.
  8:30am Doug Schulkind:

My favorite line (paraphrased) from Apocalypse Now: "I love the smell of the earthy roar of vinyl in the morning."
  8:36am listener james from westwood:

we'll come in low out of the rising sun, and about a mile out, we'll hit 'em with the african monster grooves.
  8:36am listener james from westwood:

mornin' and happy friday, doug and brian!
  8:36am Brian in UK:

That is one heck of an opening scene.
This raga is relentless, an early morning one perchance, getting us set up for later.
LJfW Are you the wing man?
  8:40am listener james from westwood:

roger that. spotter for audio artillery during the sonic bombardment.
  8:43am glenn:

your self editing is killing our fun. the mileage (or kilometreage) i could have derived from monster groove has been shattered.
  8:45am Doug Schulkind:

Mwaaaaah! Groooooonk! Paaaaaaarg!
  8:46am glenn:

i see.
  8:46am Maggie:

All I have is coffee. I want whatever you guys are having!
  8:46am Brian in UK:

I loves arcane, Olive. Yek, yek, yek.
  8:47am glenn:

i am high on life. in 12 minutes i'll be high on high life..
  8:47am Brian in UK:

Maggie, a slight ginger beer, s'il vout plait.
  8:48am Maggie:

:D
  8:48am listener james from westwood:

mokele-mbembe left monster african grooves, presumably w/ its tail.
  8:49am Doug Schulkind:

And an apricot scone, dear Maggie, or maybe a squash-blossom profiterole?
  8:50am Maggie:

oooh, profiteroles! sounds so pharmaceutical!
  8:54am glenn:

if pharmaceutical means sweet desserty goodness, then yes, i suppose it does.
  8:55am Doug Schulkind:

Open wide, Glenn, and say ahhhhhh!
  8:55am Brian in UK:

Beignets abricot. Hmmmm. See you at the beach.

Profiteroles could be popular on Wall Street.
  8:59am ndbob:

morning Doug and everyone!
  9:00am Doug Schulkind:

Hallo there, ndbob. Bob's your uncle!
  9:00am glenn:

i'm assuming missus drummer some is womaning the wheel, so you can man the comments board.
  9:01am Brian in UK:

Mornin' ndbob.

Stop your grinning & drop your linen. Oh yeah. found the ampersand, dog was chewing it..
  9:03am listener james from westwood:

a quick swipe with some purell and that & is rip-rarin' to go.
mornin' ndbob & all the ships at sea!
  9:03am glenn:

ndbob. how's tings?
  9:04am Parq:

Don't know where you are, DrumSum, but your choice to spend three hours with us instead of who/whatever you're there to see is flattering. I'm sittin' here surrounded by chewing dogs, waiting for the funk to flow. Like Phylis Diller told Spaz, spin the platter!
  9:05am Doug Schulkind:

Nah, Glenn, I got one eye on the stretch Lexus in front of me and two eyes on the playlist. Mwaaaaah! Groooooonk! Paaaaaaarg!
  9:06am Doug Schulkind:

Parq, are you kidding? I cling desperately to you (especially to Phyllis).
  9:08am ndbob:

no significant snow so far - not like the other years i've been here
  9:08am Aaron in JCity:

YEah Drummer Time!
  9:09am Van in Dallas:

yay! Friday! Hi Doug and listeners!
  9:10am glenn:

i'm not much of a car guy, i have to say, but i admit to really, really, really, wanting an old style vw beetle stretch limo, maybe 1970 vintage. is that too much to ask? also a functioning heater in it.
  9:10am Doug Schulkind:

Good morning Aaron and Van. Extended mega-greetings!
  9:12am still b/p:

re "I love the smell of the earthy roar of vinyl in the morning."
Lt. Col. Kilgore continued: "Smelled like...victrola."
  9:12am listener james from westwood:

i have a soft spot in my heart for early-70s cutlass supremes. that was my first beater car in high school and it was the length of a city block.
  9:12am listener james from westwood:

nicely done, b/p!

  9:16am Doug Schulkind:

Well, I'm just thrilled that my new '94 Dodge Neon made the four-hour journey to the Maryland suburbs (where I am currently ensconced.) Let's just say it's not highway-friendly.

about a 24 hour trip to the Maryland suburbs from here
  9:18am Doug Schulkind:

The shortest track on today's show weighs in at about 13 minutes. Everything else is 18 minutes or longer. The driver at the front of each song will walk back to us sitting in the rear and offer us some Grey Poupon.
  9:19am glenn:

i can' see stretching a '77 honda civic.
  9:19am dc pat:

functioning heater is crucial. I'll never forget driving to a gig in PGH in my 67 Fairlane, no heater, wearing too-tight Beatle boots. When we got to gig, I couldn't feel my feet/couldn't walk.
  9:20am ndbob:

wow Pat - no heater here can be fatal
  9:21am Parq:

@DrumSum: <attempts to approximate Phylis Diller laugh>
  9:21am glenn:

i don't know jeremy clarkson, but i will go on record as saying that i wish george galloway was supreme leader of the universe.
  9:22am still b/p:

Enjoying, and glad to be making, the limo-scene. This track's a keeper.
  9:22am Doug Schulkind:

That's OK, dc pat, Keith Richards has been able to feel his feet for 38 years running.
  9:22am Aaron in JCity:

I used to own this bad boy (in much worse shape + 8 track player aftermarket) http://tinyurl.com/6s8bw6l - but had to sell it for film school money
  9:24am Doug Schulkind:

Aaron, aren't Corvairs the cars that used to blow up (before the Ford Pinto even)?
  9:26am glenn:

my best cheap car (50$) was a dodge demon that had stainless steel sheets pop riveted over all the rust spots, and there were a lot of rust spots. unfortunately. i couldn't drive it on really sunny days, because the sun's reflection was blinding the other drivers.
  9:27am ndbob:

yep doug - the cars ralph nader wrote about
  9:27am Aaron in JCity:

no that was the Chevy Malibus - Corvvairs were chevys answer to the VW Bug - the subframe was an X frame instead of the standard rectangle - so the car would literal fold if it was hit from any side -
  9:29am Aaron in JCity:

this ad didnt help it either http://tinyurl.com/d8mfxsq
  9:29am ndbob:

right aaron
  9:30am Doug Schulkind:

Just looked it up: The first chapter of Ralph Nader's 1965 book "Unsafe at Any Speed" was called "The Sporty Corvair—The One-Car Accident"
  9:31am Doug Schulkind:

The damage in that Corvair ad was all up front. The damned thing had the engine in the rear, unfortunately.
  9:31am still b/p:

I thought they were just too easily smashable and unsafe, with empty compartment in front instead of engine. But apparently handling was the big complaint from Nader and others.
  9:32am ndbob:

i remember riding around in my friends corvair
  9:34am dc pat:

I bought the Fairlane from a real, live, Pennsylvania Dutch woman who needed her pig-poop-covered son translate to German for her.
  9:35am Aaron in JCity:

it was actually a good engine - flat head alumnuimn air cooled engine - that was the only decent part of the car i owned the rest was rusty blue and a trunk full of spare chrome and moon disc hubcaps - loved that car
  9:36am Doug Schulkind:

Pig poop is the same in every language.
  9:37am dc pat:

Ach die poopen!
  9:39am Jack:

Hi everybody, love the music. My brother had a Corvair the engine would occasionally fall out-while driving- but we could easily lift it and put it back. A real POS.
  9:40am pgw in mntclr:

Fela in the morning is a good thing
  9:40am glenn:

the engine would occasionally fall out-while driving. now that's funny. if inconvenient.

Greetings Jack! Welcome to the conversation (about porcine unmentionables and deathtraps)
  9:42am Scott:

Awesome. I wonder if there's a way to listen to your show while doing mine.
  9:45am Brian in UK:

Saw this beauty in 2005. Memorable. Handy for the shopping.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szgymwRLEf0
  9:45am Van in Dallas:

Sweet! A mothership show drive by. Hi Scott :)
  9:45am dc pat:

yeah this Fela is totally killing!
  9:45am Doug Schulkind:

Scott, you could bring my stream up on the board and listen in cue! (Not that I would advise doing so. You are piloting the mothersip; I am merely steering a space probe.)
  9:46am still b/p:

Encounters in different parts of the country have reinforced the sharp fume-fact: Pig poop is powerfully foulllllll.
  9:47am Scott:

Awwwww hell, I should just pot you up on the board and learn how it's really done!
  9:47am dc pat:

still: had to do archeology work next to a field that had just been sprayed with pig poopen once....you're right. It's the worst.
  9:48am glenn:

i'll take pig over chicken.
  9:49am Doug Schulkind:

Ha ha ha, I can comment whilst talking! Ha ha ha!
  9:49am listener james from westwood:

turpigchicken will be on the menu tonight. bring your trenchers.
  9:50am dc pat:

I'll take neither and stick to the seitan.
  9:50am Doug Schulkind:

Please God tell me you made that up, LJFW.
  9:51am still b/p:

A few years ago a farmer just outside town spread chicken fertilizer, and it stank up the air so strongly throughout such a big section of the city that it made the newspapers the next day.
  9:51am Jack:

I've been privileged to work my whole life with all kinds of animal waste, and pig shit is very bad. I like pigs, but their shit stinks. Gibbon shit is the worst.
  9:54am dc pat:

Gibbons! Saw the gibbons at DC zoo pee on humans once!
  9:54am Doug Schulkind:

Ding ding ding ding ding! We have a winner! "Gibbon shit" was the magic phrase of the day! Congratulations Jack! (Guess what you have won...)

Marwood: Shut up, I'll deal with this.
Withnail: We've gone on holiday by mistake. We're in this cottage here. Are you the farmer?
Marwood: Stop saying that Withnail, of course he's the fucking farmer!
Withnail: [calmly] Grab its ring. Keep your bag up. Outvive him.
Isaac Parkin: Hey, show no fear! Just run at it!
Marwood: Well, that can't be sensible, can it, the bastard's about to run at me!
Isaac Parkin: Well, it's randy!
Marwood: Yes, yeah, I know he is!
Withnail: [casually lighting a cigarette] He wants to get down there and have sex with those cows.
Marwood: Shut up, Withnail!
[the bull is scraping the ground with its front hoof, snorting]
Isaac Parkin: Run at it, shouting!
Withnail: Do as he says. Start shouting. He won't gore you.
Marwood: A coward you are, Withnail, an expert on bulls you are not! AAAAARGGGHHHH!
[he throws the shopping the air and it scatters in the mud. Screaming like a madman he moves towards the bull, which turns around and runs back through the gate. He slams it shut and slumps against it, shaken]
Isaac Parkin: Shut that gate and keep it shut!
Withnail: [cheerfully hopping back over the wall] I think an evening at The Crow.

jay bellerose, who's the best drummer around in my opinion, uses a 1930's marching band bass drum in his kit.
  11:19am Doug Schulkind:

When my high school marching band played at Disney World in 1980 as part of 50th birthday celebrations for Mickey Mouse, I was playing the bass drum. The band was all rigged out in our uniforms and absurdly tall wool Marge-Simpson-hair hats. It was the end of May. We all had to take salt tablets in order to not pass out in the heat.

Thanks a helluva lot for sparking that hellish memory, Glenn.

  11:27am Hugo:

Looking at the dates of these recordings, they're all from the mid-70s to the mid-80s. Of course, the show is not over yet, so some track may emerge to break the pattern. Anyway, the question is: are these longish tracks a thing of the past (as far as African popular music goes?

Splendid music!

Ah, there's one 1989 track, but the trend is clear ...

  11:31am Jack:

I gotta run, but Doug thanks in particular for this show! I'm downloading the archive asap. Wonderful music. thanks again
  11:32am Doug Schulkind:

One is a lot less likely to encounter a CD of African music today with 20- to 25-minute tracks on them. Typically, only recordings of live concerts are released with tunes as a long. Every one of the songs I played today was recorded in a studio.

Cheers Jack. Thanks for stopping by!
  11:35am Brian in UK:

Doug, what was the name of the site you mentioned in the last break?
  11:36am Doug Schulkind:

still b/p, watching the action on the field can be rough, but the ballpark in PIttsburgh, PNC Park is its corporate name, is hands-down the most beautiful park in the country. Absolutely stunning. If you have a choice, go with a Friday night game. I'm pretty sure there are fireworks shows EVERY Friday after home games. Plus, the night-time cityscape on view beyond the outfield wall is stunning. The gleaming golden Roberto Clemente bridge arching across the Allegheny River; a bulging alabaster moon hanging ripe over the city. Absolutely magical.

Here's that site, Brian: http://wrldsrv.blogspot.com/
  11:40am Rob in SAV:

Nice talkover music today, too. Just saying.
  11:41am still b/p:

Thanks, Doug. Nephew and a parent would have to drive down from Erie, so making Friday evening first pitch might be tough, but that sounds great, so I'll see. And they can stay with another family member in the city afterward. Appreciate it.
Powerful good show today.
  11:43am Doug Schulkind:

  11:48am Doug Schulkind:

I generally avoid doing themed or single-subject shows on these Fridays. (The Tuesday one-hour show gives me the opportunity to address that urge in a brief medium and be done with it before I get bored.) On the other hand, I wish could play another 4-5 hours of this stuff.
  11:51am listener james from westwood:

this was a thematic triumph. thanks a ton!
  11:53am Doug Schulkind:

  11:54am Rob in SAV:

Well you sort of can play another four or five hours of it -- you have your own radio station!
  11:54am tahomajohn:

Great show, Doug. I will be listening to it again via the archive:) And thanks for the fabulicious links you sent out the other day via the Mother Lode... omg. Cheers!

Hugo, today's show was pre-recorded. I am at my parents' home in Maryland for a visit. I have no access to my digital (and analog) library. Otherwise, I would have no excuse!

  12:01pm Vicki:

Great show :)
  12:02pm Doug Schulkind:

Thanks Vicki!
  12:26pm Domenic from Moonlicky:

Son of a bitch the wood is strong, and not meant to prey on!
