@DrumSum,8:59 - Hah! I tried to learn a little tourist Japanese a few years ago. "Arigato" was one of the first things I got down, but for some reason, I could *never* retain the word for "please".
  9:11am glenn:

that probably wouldn't go over very well in japan.
  9:13am jill:

Good morning all! Thank you Mr. Drummer for the Santorum video. It is going to be a great Friday because of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=js3BYcHmBhE&feature=youtu.be
  9:13am Hugo:

Here's a piece of advice from the Ukrainian emergencies minister (according to BBC news):

You need to get up in the morning, take active exercise and work," he was quoted by Ukrainskaya Pravda as telling reporters on Wednesday. "It hasn't killed anyone yet and only makes a person fitter."His personal advice to keep warm, he added, was to "run 8-10km [5-6 miles] every morning and bathe in cold water, all year round".

Most of the more than 100 people found dead so far were homeless. No further comments needed, I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Doug Schulkind:

My pleasure, Jill. I am still chuckling. Sure hope Santorum can come up from the rear!

It's hard to get a sweeter vocal in reggae than Ken Boothe. The last tune in this set will give Ken a run for his moolah.

This is really good - never heard Jimmy London before.

Good morning my music loving friends. 51 degrees F bright and sunny here in the Carolinas. Whether winter or spring, I could easily take six more weeks.

Not quite sure what my cat grooves to. Bit of an inscrutable fellow, that one.

Great to hear Ola Belle Reed. First came across her on a multi-cd Rounder compilation. The Real Music Box, I think it was. And there is very nice Arhoolie box out there, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Doug Schulkind:

What's a record shop, daddy?
  10:07am ndbob:

I vaguely remember this speech.
  10:07am Javiere:

Hey brother Duglas
  10:08am Artie:

All of our records are effectively "Music for Plants" records. Plants have more eclectic tastes than they are generally given credit for. Especially vines. They'll listen to the craziest shit.
  10:09am Shaun:

Incredibly moving speech. Thanks, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Doug Schulkind:

Hey Javiere! Everyone welcome Javiere, he and I did a radio show together in 1980! It is "that" Javiere, yes?)
  10:11am seang:

I feel good today--love the show!
  10:11am Javiere:

Yes, and tell that to Schizophragma hydrangiodes 'Moonlight' a vine who needs crazy music !

  10:16am dc pat:

let us now open the beer discussion..
  10:16am glenn:

beer is good. discussion open.
  10:16am david:

stick with the beer. it's a much more rewarding relationship if ya ask me....
  10:18am dc pat:

I think my local store is out of Brooklyn Chocolate Stout. Probably a good thing as that stuff tends to give me a headache..
  10:18am Hugo:

You might well ask, Brian, though some do survive, like Rough Trade and Honest Jon's in London and Downtown Music Gallery in NY. In the case of the latter, it took some careful searching in the Chinatown section of downtown NY to find it. Without a good city map, I would have been lost. It's the sort of place you can walk right by without knowing it. Used to be on the Bowery before.
  10:20am listener james from westwood:

a recent party guest was kind enough to bring otter creek copper ale, of middlebury, vt. hadn't any experience with it, but she knows vt and beer. went over well. will prob. kill the last couple w homemade bean burritos tonight

  10:28am Hugo:

The two London ones are on/off Portobello Road which may have been low rent once, but not now, I'd think. Rough Trade has an eastern branch on the outskirts of the City, close to the Spitalfields market, which seems to be an up and coming area. Popular with the younger student/artist crowd I noticed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

Did me some LOVELY record shopping all 'round Portobello Road. This would have been in 1993.
  10:32am Hugo:

"But the next time you stumble upon a copy of Edgar Broughton Band's amazing yet cultish Wasa Wasa with a slightly stained cover, you'll probably find it offered for a price not seen since 1995."

Mine's not stained, though ...

Hops to it, Annie.
  10:44am Brian en Angleterre:

That's fine(ings) by me
  10:50am Hugo:

Brian, I have the twenty-minute version of that one off the Glastonbury Fayre Revelation album and, I should add, the ten-minute version, recorded on my cell phone, when the band hit town last year. Quite some distortion, due to being close to the speakers, but who cares, gotta catch the old chaps while they're still about ...
  10:51am Carmichael:

Good morning, all. Brian, my dog said you were talking about him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Brian:

Yo Carm, I can speak for myself.

Do I have to separate you two?
  10:54am glenn:

wheat, meet chaff.
  10:54am Carmichael:

I'm just repeating what Spencer said. He could be lying out his ass, like this whole "I'm a Cairn Terrier, really!" thing. Inveterate liar, I say.
  10:58am annie:

this reminds me of kristen miller's cello work.. she got very little press.. but i did find her, finally, on youtube.. took a while
  11:02am Brian en Angleterre:

Hello Carmichael. There is an impostor in our midst. Who would pretend to be a Cairn called Brian that can type?
  11:09am Hugo:

Beer? The weekend stash looks something like this:

Struise Breweries, Belgium. Black Albert. Belgian Royal Stout.
The Orkney Brewery. Skull Splitter, British ale, named after a Viking Earl, obvious choice
Gaulois. Belgian Amber Bocq
Cuvée Dolphine. Truth can set you free. Belgian bourbon-aged stout, stored on barrels obtained from Kentucky

The weekend starts soon ...
  11:10am Carmichael:

@Brian en Angleterre: Obviously it was a pesky comments board pixie. Pay it no heed, and it will vanish.
  11:10am Brian en Angleterre:

Orchestra Baobab were cooler than a summer breeze last Monday. Lovely guitar work. Ten men working.
Pass one over Hugo.
  11:11am Hugo:

Virtually yours, Brian ...
  11:15am Carmichael:

Out in these parts, the West Coast IPAs are the traditional Superbowl fare:
Bear Republic's Racer 5 and Apex
Arrogant Bastard Ale
Drake's Denogginizer
Mendocino Brewing's Eye of the Hawk
To name but a few ...
  11:19am ndbob:

I'd say I average about two beers a year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Doug Schulkind:

Better than two years a beer, ndbob. That would be no fun at all.
  11:23am Carmichael:

Since I'm making the racks o'babybacks this year, I'll need to stay refreshed at all times. I may even hire a beer boy, just in case.
  11:24am ndbob:

True Doug:)
  11:25am Hugo:

Over here I can find this brewery which seems to make good stuff, though I haven't tried any yet, but it's on the to do list:

http://www.portbrewing.com/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

What is a beer boy, a tank-topped fellow that comes around with a long pole and cleans the leaves out of your stein?
  11:28am Carmichael:

No Doug, but that would be perfect. I was thinking more along the lines of man servant, who would open my beer, hand it to me, occasionally dab the excess foam from my pursed lips, and handle the stack of empties.
  11:32am glenn:

oh yeah, i forgot. there's some sort of sporting event this weekend, right?
  11:32am dc pat:

I need bourbon cask aged beer. Haven't tried it yet, dammit. Who's playing in the super bowl?
  11:33am dc pat:

you and me glenn. although, truth be told, if it were a big soccer event, I'd be all over that.
  11:33am Listener Katya:

What an endorsement for the last set, Doug! Yay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Doug Schulkind:

Hi Listener Katya! So great you're here/hear.
  11:35am cholly:

Back from doing errands, catching last half hour while doing my exercises. Amazing grooves as always!
  11:36am Hugo:

Filipinos do the best covers in Asia. No contest!
  11:36am Carmichael:

@dcpat, I made a honey bourbon porter last year that knocked me out. I bought an old bourbon cask from a guy I know, brewed a honey porter, and let it ferment in there for a month. First timer's luck. I'm afraid to try it again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Doug Schulkind:

Picked a good 1/2 hour to catch Cholly!
  11:38am trish:

"Belgian bourbon-aged stout" said Hugo.
  11:39am Artie:

Local brewery Big Boss recently served up some casks of their porter soaked on bourbon soaked chips. Delicious stuff. Adds just the kick and sharpness that a good porter can benefit from. Duck Rabbit's porter comes with a bit of an edge built in. Fell in love with Six Point Righteous Rye Ale on a recent trip to Brooklyn. No distribution here in NC, sadly. Been sampling other Rye Ales/IPAs and found a pretty good analogue in Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye. Soon to be brewed in state.
  11:41am cholly:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

  11:48am dc pat:

Very favourable ratings, but stouts are quite popular with this crowd.

Ha, Doug you mentioned you thought we should all go back to CB radio...lol I bought one for my drive from Dallas, a mobile CB for like $50 from a truck stop. Saved me a lot of $$$ in speeding tickets :)
  10:20am Van in DC:

Not sure which tune I'm hearing in the 2nd set right now, but sounds very opera-ish, female vocalist, orchestra...very nice indeed.
  10:21am Van in DC:

Okay, it was Maria Callas ...because I'm now listening to the speech...
  10:23am Doug Schulkind:

@Van
You bought a CB radio?!?! You are the coolest.
  10:31am Van in DC:

Just a little handheld mobile, nothing fancy...I rocked with one in my 1977 red t-top firebird back in the day though lol :)
  11:38am Van in DC:
