The Sway Machinery in Mali with Khaira Arby.

Jeremiah Lockwood grew up with deep Jewish music - his dad was a cantor - but as a teen he also started playing deep American music - country blues guitar. He pulls both streams together with his band the Sway Machinery, an all star outfit whose members also play with Balkan Beat Box (as he does), Antibalas and even Arcade Fire.

The group's lyrics are drawn from Jewish religious texts, but the music is wide open. Recently the band added yet another dimension, teaming up with the electrifying Malian Singer Khaira Arby. She joins the Sway Machinery on the band's latest cd The House of Friendly Ghosts (JDub) and on an Electric Cowbell 7"". The Sway Machinery joins us live ahead of a big tour of Australia sandwiched between two NY gigs - Feb 15th at the Museum of Jewish Heritage and March 9th at Zebulon.

Forro in the Dark: Lampião Chegou Favoriting / Light a Candle / NuBlu
Before playing this song, I said it was "accordion-driven". But while conventional forro of Northeastern Brazil typically features accordion (which came to the country from Portugal in the 1800s), the squeezebox is nowhere to be heard on this track by a not so conventional NY-based forro band.

Yeah nice tracks! Just curious if you use a stereo microphone for your live remotes from Barbes and other places, if so which one? Thanks.

Warm headphones do help! Hi everyone. Eric - we don't use stereo mics for remotes - if you're wondering about getting a stereo mic - email me robw AT wfmu DOT org tomorrow or Monday and I can give you some thoughts on that.

It is all over the news that Whitney Houston has died. Her music may not have been my cup of tea but still a really tragic story.
